"Hey guys, just FYI, the new Coda 4582 modem has been recalled! You need to go to the Rogers store for a modem swap right away. The new modems have a round black sticker near where you plug in the power cord, and also another round black sticker near the barcode on the box."

Don't get too excited. I got mine yesterday and for four hours it was great. After that I measured the speed using ethernet connection and speed was 16 mps! 6 mps on WIFI
It appears that it needs a modification to correct it
If the mod is installed the area adjacent to the ser number should have a black circle stamped on it. Disappointed user! Taking it back today? Hope the retail store has one.

same here. Got the black dot modem last night...already had to re-start it twice. Once the initial working period of about 2-3 hours, speeds went from about 2 down (coda no black dot) to about 5 down (coda black dot). They're checking the lines in my backyard tomorrow morning. I guess it's assumed a squirrel is running up and down the lines at exactly the same time each day for the last week since my modem is going down at generally the same time twice a day. They'll soon figure out it's this box (black dot or not) and not the lines nor my imagination!

The Modem HASN'T been recalled. There is a select batch of modems that have an interference issue, it doesn't affect all the CODA modems, only the select batch. Rogers Dave is running tests to determine which users are affected and will have someone from Rogers contact them to swap the modem. You can do a few tests to see if you are affected:

Login to the modem, goto DOCSIS WAN, make sure you are bonding to 32 downstream channels, also make sure the SNR is consistant with all the channels. If say 30 channels are around 38-40 SNR, and two channels show 5-10 SNR then that is an issue.

Also a quick question about these revised modems, is Hitron making the change at the factory, or does Rogers add the shielding? I ask because this issue came up around 2-3 weeks ago, and I'm surprised how fast it has been corrected in production hardware.

So I called Rogers to see if any black dot modems in stock this morning.

He says and I asked him to repeat it "you want the modems without the black dot"...LOL uh okay.

not surprised in the least. Call again and they'll prob tell you to find one with a purple sticker.

Using the CODA-4582 w/o the black dot.   How's my signal and should I exchange my modem for the one with the black dot?

Down frequencies are in spec (between +10 and -10) and return (35 to 50) are in spec as well. All your levels and SNR (30 to 40) look good.

I've been here awhile

I'm now on my 4th CODA-4582: 1 w/o dot, three with the black dot.

Like many others, my modem starts off fast, and then slows to a crawl and then no connection. Pull the plug to reboot and the speed goes up, only to drop off again over time. Bell was a dream by comparison.

almost the same scenario here except i've had 3---2 w/o the black dot and i currently have 1 with the black dot. No real difference in all 3. They're supposedly coming to change my outdoor lines today. I can almost guarantee that won't make a difference. We'll see.

@tsac1, I didn't get a chance to look at your line statistics but based on the description of your symptoms, you seem to experience the speed degradation over time problem.

I've listed open issues for the CODA-4582 modem in this thread and update it every couple of days as soon as I receive updates from Hitron.

The speed degradation over time is currently the top priority on the list for Hitron and I will be requesting updates on Monday.

As soon as I receive a new firmware, I will be pushing it out to participants of the firmware trial program. To join the program, simply send a private message to @CommunityHelps with your modem MAC address and serial number.

Same scenario here. On my fourth CODA. 3 without a black dot. Rogers tech came over and swapped to the new ones with the black dot. No difference at all. Speeds drop down to 10 Mbps reboot fixes it but drops down after a while again. So sick of this.

Same situation here, I have the black dot but didn't fix any issues... I am here rebooting the modem every 3 hours.

Ok, thanks for that @RogersDave and I will prob sign up but I fear that one of those trial program updates will render my modem completely unusable. That most likely won't be the case, right?

Everything is possible, this is a test software after all. However, what I can tell you is that I performed thousands of upgrades as part of this program and only had a few (less than 5) cases where a modem required a swap due to an incorrect firmware.

There were cases where the new firmware caused more issues than it fixed but as part of the trial program, I always worked one on one with the impacted customers to flag the defect and downgrade their modem back to another version until their specific issue is addressed.

With all of these issues with Hitron, Rogers has got to be spending a pretty penny on support. Why not cut their losses with Hitron and move to a different vendor?

There is no one else who gets newer technology to the market as fast as Hitron. Hitron had 24-channel D3 Puma 6s months/years before others; I don't think anybody else really has a shipping D3.1 gateway, either...

More importantly: I suspect a lot of the bugs are in the common Intel-supplied code for the Puma 7 (or Puma 6 before that) chipset. Other manufacturers would be just as vulnerable to those bugs... and I even wonder if one reason other manufacturers have a better reputation is because THEY start shipping their product after Hitron/Hitron's customers have already identified the major bugs on the Intel end.

Re: Rogers Hitron CODA-4582 Hardware

Easy fix just let us Rogers customers decide on what we want we are the ones who are supporting Rogers no ? Why can Rogers just allow us to use a standalone modem ?

Re: Rogers Hitron CODA-4582 Hardware

It's Rogers network, so they wanna make sure the devices operate properly on their network. If people bought their own devices and they were DOCSIS 2 for example, it would cause slow downs, etc. on the network. Right now Rogers wants everyone on DOCSIS 3.1, and Hitron is the only provider of a DOCSIS 3.1 Gateway.
