Good morning Community,
As I mentioned in a post two days ago, we have received the next firmware 2.0.10.20 from Hitron. We are currently running initial testing on this version and will push it out to participants in the firmware trial program as soon as it passes initial testing.
However, while running these tests, we discovered abnormal behavior with ICMP and are awaiting feedback from Hitron today to asses how this will be addressed. As soon as I this is confirmed, I’ll update the change log with the correct version information and start pushing it out.
In parallel, we are still working on the following high priority items. In some cases below, I requested affected customers to reach out to me via private message. If you do so, please include your modem MAC address in the subject line (even if we exchange messages daily) as there are a lot of you reaching out to me daily 🙂
UDP Packet Loss
The investigation for what has been reported as UDP packet loss is still ongoing. We have deployed a probe at one fellow forum member on both a CODA-4582 and a CGNM-3552 to collect additional data. We are actively working with Hitron and Intel on the results observed.
Based on what we know so far, in most instances UDP packet loss is coupled with higher uplink usage in the area. Although the impact is noticeable in specific logs (League of Legends), the root cause for the perceivable impact (while playing) is likely related to bufferbloat (see next issue).
Bufferbloat
When comparing the performance of a CODA-4582 to a CGNM-3552 in the same network conditions, the CODA-4582 consistently reports higher bufferbloat when tested on DSLReports.
Update April 12: The solution for this problem will come in two folds. It will require a change in software which will possibly be included in 2.0.10.27 but more likely in 2.0.10.28 and a change in network configuration.
The network configuration change is not compatible with the current firmware so this change will only come after a vast majority of the modems are running the new code. We are however looking at a way to make the change only for specific modems to support testing in the community.
Update April 22: This problem seems resolved in firmware 2.0.10.27
5 GHz WiFi Low range for channels 36 to 48
Lower WiFi channels on the modem have a much smaller range. This is due in part to the limit imposed by Industry Canada to maximum transmit power.
Furthermore, the current automatic channel selection (auto mode) tends to select the lower channels when in similar load conditions.
Workaround: manually select higher channels (149-153-157-161)
Update April 22: The channel selection algorithm has been improved in firmware 2.0.10.27
Loss of OFDM Channel Lock
Under some RF conditions, the modem fails to lock properly on the OFDM channel. This typically result in variable performance.
Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2
List of connected device does not get fully populated
This is a known issue that has been tracked since firmware 2.0.10.13. We are making improvements at every firmware but it is not a perfect system.
The situation is worst after a reboot or firmware upgrade as the list gets reset and must be repopulated as devices renew their DHCP lease.
NAT Loopback not working for wired clients
When setting up port forwarding to an internal server, it is possible for a client on WiFi to reach the server using the external IP/port. If the client is on a wired interface, it doesn't work.
Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2 (not confirmed)
LAN Counters not working
Some customers reported that LAN counters (especially in bridge mode) are reporting inaccurate values.
This problem has been reported to Hitron for investigation.
Unexpected modem reboot
Some customers reported their modem reboots unexpectedly. We have also seen this behavior in our lab.
Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2
Missing SC-QAM Channels
After a reboot, some modems are missing SC-QAM channels. A fix has been implemented in 2.0.10.26T2 to address this behavior but it has not corrected all scenarios.
Investigation continues with Hitron.
WiFi Survey
The WiFi Survey functionality in firmware 2.0.10.26T2 (and possibly before) reports incorrect SSID names.
Guest Network
When connecting to the Guest Network, an error message is displayed "only allow DHCP client to use this wireless". This has been reported in firmware 2.0.10.26T2.
Update April 22: This issue has been resolved in firmware 2.0.10.27
Update May 2: It seems this issue is not fully resolved and still experienced by some users
Future Planned Improvements

@igorella1, fwiw, the CGN3ACR will handle your internet plan data rates. The slow wifi could be the result of wifi settings, channel setting or physical construction of the modem.
The CGN3 series modems have three 2.4 Ghz antenna and three 5 Ghz wifi antenna which are all mounted on one side the motherboard. That motherboard sits vertically in the modem. The CODA-4582 has three 2.4 Ghz antenna and four 5 Ghz antenna all of which are mounted at the top of the modem, and therefore away from any interference and shielding from the motherboard. The motherboard sits below the antenna. All other things being equal, my personal opinion is that the 4582 would deliver better omni-directional wifi service although I would have to see the wifi test results to really confirm that.
Slow wifi speeds can also be caused by the wifi settings and the wifi environment that you're in, ie: who are you competing with for clear wifi channels. With that in mind, when you have time, can you read thru the following post and make any changes necessary to the wifi settings. The aim of course is to bring the wifi data rates up to where they should be.

For the external connections, the green box that you referred to is the local tap, which services your internet, cable tv and Home Phone, and that of your neighbors as well. If you're having problems running a CODA-4582, then your neighbors are probably suffering the same problem. If the tech swapped cable ports at the tap to check the signal levels thru those ports, that would have indicated whether or not the issue was with your cable port or with the whole tap itself or further upstream. Its possible that the tap across the street was on another cable entirely, which runs to the neighborhood Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS). That CMTS is a green metal box, about three feet high, and approximately three feet by three feet square, possibly slightly larger. The CMTS services all of the neighborhood taps, and therefore all of the neighborhood cable internet, tv and Home Phone services provided by Rogers and TPIAs, thru the Rogers cable system. You might walk past it or drive past it every day, not realizing what its for.
So, there are three possible locations for problems, at your local tap, at the CMTS, or, in the cable that runs from the CMTS to the local tap. Its conceivable that the problem was thought to have been isolated at the CMTS, and therefore the work order was cancelled. If the tech that cancelled the work order did not check for the results at the local tap, then, as you discovered, the problem could still exist at the local tap. Someone will have to go back in, determine what the problem is and call in the necessary resources to see that the problem is corrected. Small consolation at this point, but, just pointing out what might have happened.
While the CGN3ACR can handle the speeds that you're at, this will potentially be a bigger problem for anyone running gigabit service on a CODA-4582 thru your tap. Your neighbors should be complaining if they're in that situation.

Complaint to Rogers. Visit scheduled for Senior Tech. 2 vans arrived, one of the guys introduced himself as senior tech. Told me that my signal is too strong, added attenuator to a patch cable and left without waiting. 15 minutes and 1 mbps. I called him and demanded Rogers ID number. That is when he admitted that he is not a senior tech at all.
Complaint to Rogers. This time real live senior tech arrived. Very thorough. Took ownership of the issue. Replaced all the cables in the basement. Threw away the attenuator. Replaced the modem twice. Same picture. He then decided to test the speed at the green box with his PC and new (CODA-4582) modem. Same picture. I talked him to test the same setup (modem plus his laptop) at the green box across the street. This worked like a charm. The problem was upstream from the box. So far so good. He strung up a temporary line and initiated workordersto bury the cable and for Rogers maintenance to fix the infrastructure problem. Everything worked for 2 to 3 weeks, survived several outages. Then somebody at Rogers removed the temp line, cancelled the burial order and reconnected me to the old green box. Problem reappeared if full force!
This time I went to the store and downgraded my modem (did not want to do it because of future proof and much poorer WIFI performance of the Rocket CGN3AMR modem. Result: stable fast connection. Speed of 130 on the ethernet, WIFI 185 on Android, but only 35 on iPad Air Pro next to the modem.
If you think my description above is too verbose, here is a brief summary of the puzzle:
CODA-4582 on one green box works fine, on a different one, boots up with high speed, but "chokes" within 15 minutes and slows down to below 1 mbps. Tested with 4 different CODA-4582 several times.
CGN3AMR works fine on the "problem" green box
Wow, clearly this is a maintenance issue that Rogers should fix your tap. The fact that the modem swap back to DOCSIS 3.0 makes me suspect a DOCSIS 3.1 OFDM channel issue at your tap. Hopefully someone see's all you've been through and gets the tap fixed soon.

I have an issue with staying connected to 5G wifi on my windows 10 new Acer laptop. It switches to 2.4G automatically though I am only 10 feet away from the modem. All other devices stay connected. I have updated the driver for my Qualcom QCA9377 wireless adapter and have unchecked the "let computer turn off this divice to save power".
Any help is appreciated.

Disable WMM on the network adapter in the computer:
settings -> device manager -> wifi adapter, then properties, then you'll find an option to change the settings. Also if it has roaming aggressiveness set it to the lowest setting.

I guess this Issue still exist. I got the CODA (which is Number 3) as of todate and I guess when connecting the Coax you get when wire test the modem speed around 50-60 then after around 3-5 mins the speed becomes around 4 mb/s
what is supposed to be done?

For the last month, my Internet speed has dropped from the 900 Mbps on speedtest.net and Rogers speedtest sites to around 500 Mbps. I contacted @CommunityHelps and they suggested I do a factory reset to remove the Beta firmware which I did (running 28T2 now).
After the reset I still have speed issues. I tested from a wired cat 6 device and only having 1 computer plugged in and still have speed issues. Back in Aug of this month, there was yet another area issue for postal code M1C4Z2.
Could someone open a ticket with the network group to figure out what the issue is? Also, has anyone else in East Scarborough had speed issues in the last month?

@Alex4161 Signals looks fine, however when you speed test, are you using the Rogers speed test servers on both tests? When I use the Rogers speedtest, on the Rogers website, or the rogers server on speedtest.net they both report speed test results around 600mb/s. When I choose a different server (EastLink - Barrie) I max out my connection.
I would suggest you try the beta.speedtest.net then manually choose EastLink Barrie as the test server and post your wired speed test results. I just did the test myself to confirm, and choosing Rogers Toronto got me 650mb/s, choosing EastLink I got 850mb/s. Both test run over WiFi at 8:05am today.

Not to disagree with @gp-se, but although the signal levels are all well within spec, it's the variation that concerns me a little. In my experience when I see up to a 2.2dB difference (40% signal loss) within close frequency bands (681 to 693MHz for example), and overall a spread of 7.5dB (82% signal loss), it tells me that there's something wrong with the cabling. This might be nothing, or it might be contributing to your problem. Do you know what your levels were like before?

My signal levels look a lot worse, I have 6-7 db of variation in my signals, however I haven't experienced any speed issues. During the summer my signal levels take a big drop, however in the winter my signals only have 3db of variation which is normal. Temperature changes the resistance so I have no control over the signals changing for the worse in the summer.
And yes I can pull 850mb/s over WiFi, however I have my Gateway in bridge mode running through a Pfsense box that goes to a TP Link Archer C3150 in Access Point Mode. I've tried other Routers: Asus 1900P, Asus RT-88U, and the Coda in Gateway Mode, and none of them touch the TP Link. All were tested in the same spot, and using the exact same WiFi settings/channels. With the exception of the CODA all were set to Access Point Mode using the same Pfsense box to do the routing. The closest was the 88u that pulled 700mb/s over WiFi, but it wasn't consistent, the Archer C3150 is consistently pulling 800-850mb/s over WiFi.

I just ran a speedtest from the Eastlink server @gp-se and my speeds were 298.29 and 36.92. Pretty pathetic for a 1 GB service.

The guest network issue with "only allow DHCP client to use..." is definitely not solved. I'm running firmware version 2.0.10.28T2. What's the point of having guest netwrok when it doesn't work and it's been such a long outstanding problem!

We had a power outage in our region of Etobicoke last week. Lasted for about 30 minutes and affected a few thousand people. After power was restored - and up to now - our upload speed has been less than half of what it used to be.
Prior to the outage, speed tests were consistently 190 down, 15 up. Now they're 190 down, 5 up. I've factory reset the modem, switched between gateway and bridge mode, and power-cycled the modem (left it off for a good 15 minutes).
The download speed is great, yes, but the upload speed is killing us (the kids, mainly). It drops to 1.5 or 2 during heavy traffic times. Any ideas?

You need a tech visit, your upload signals are too low. I would call Rogers and have them run a signal check on your line.

Are you sure about them being too low? A poster on a previous thread has very similar stats and great upload:

Although upload speeds could be good, you are borderline, so any noise that enters the line will cause upload issues. It's better to get the upload signals in the middle range so there is room up/down if noise/signal changes.

@gborges, when you call tech support, ask the CSR if the OFDM channel signal level and signal to noise ratio is within spec. The data for the OFDM DOCSIS 3.1 channel isn't correct in the user interface, but, tech support has access to the correct data. As for the low upstream DOCSIS 3.0 levels, these days, on the 4582 modem, the low upstream levels are more noticeable. That shouldn't cause any issues, but, its rather strange to see given the historical levels with previous DOCSIS 3.0 modems which ran somewhere in the 36 to 40 dBmV range. The CMTS actually determines the modem output levels, commanding an increase or decrease, so, if the CMTS is satisfied with low upstream levels, thats ok. You could ask the CSR for the upstream signal level and signal to noise ratio at the CMTS. It should be at or above 0 dBmV with a signal to noise ratio at or above 25 dBmV. That will tell you if the modem output is ok, or if perhaps the CMTS isn't commanding the required levels to meet those input levels.
While you're on the phone with tech support, ask the CSR to check the modem provisioning and ensure that its set for your internet plan, 150/15 if I remember that correctly.
