Good morning Community,

As I mentioned in a post two days ago, we have received the next firmware 2.0.10.20 from Hitron. We are currently running initial testing on this version and will push it out to participants in the firmware trial program as soon as it passes initial testing.

However, while running these tests, we discovered abnormal behavior with ICMP and are awaiting feedback from Hitron today to asses how this will be addressed. As soon as I this is confirmed, I’ll update the change log with the correct version information and start pushing it out.

In parallel, we are still working on the following high priority items. In some cases below, I requested affected customers to reach out to me via private message. If you do so, please include your modem MAC address in the subject line (even if we exchange messages daily) as there are a lot of you reaching out to me daily 🙂

UDP Packet Loss

The investigation for what has been reported as UDP packet loss is still ongoing. We have deployed a probe at one fellow forum member on both a CODA-4582 and a CGNM-3552 to collect additional data. We are actively working with Hitron and Intel on the results observed.

Based on what we know so far, in most instances UDP packet loss is coupled with higher uplink usage in the area. Although the impact is noticeable in specific logs (League of Legends), the root cause for the perceivable impact (while playing) is likely related to bufferbloat (see next issue).

Bufferbloat

When comparing the performance of a CODA-4582 to a CGNM-3552 in the same network conditions, the CODA-4582 consistently reports higher bufferbloat when tested on DSLReports.

Update April 12: The solution for this problem will come in two folds. It will require a change in software which will possibly be included in 2.0.10.27 but more likely in 2.0.10.28 and a change in network configuration.

The network configuration change is not compatible with the current firmware so this change will only come after a vast majority of the modems are running the new code. We are however looking at a way to make the change only for specific modems to support testing in the community.

Update April 22: This problem seems resolved in firmware 2.0.10.27

5 GHz WiFi Low range for channels 36 to 48

Lower WiFi channels on the modem have a much smaller range. This is due in part to the limit imposed by Industry Canada to maximum transmit power.

Furthermore, the current automatic channel selection (auto mode) tends to select the lower channels when in similar load conditions.

Workaround: manually select higher channels (149-153-157-161)

Update April 22: The channel selection algorithm has been improved in firmware 2.0.10.27

Loss of OFDM Channel Lock

Under some RF conditions, the modem fails to lock properly on the OFDM channel. This typically result in variable performance.

Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2

List of connected device does not get fully populated

This is a known issue that has been tracked since firmware 2.0.10.13. We are making improvements at every firmware but it is not a perfect system.

The situation is worst after a reboot or firmware upgrade as the list gets reset and must be repopulated as devices renew their DHCP lease.

NAT Loopback not working for wired clients

When setting up port forwarding to an internal server, it is possible for a client on WiFi to reach the server using the external IP/port. If the client is on a wired interface, it doesn't work.

Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2 (not confirmed)

LAN Counters not working

Some customers reported that LAN counters (especially in bridge mode) are reporting inaccurate values.

This problem has been reported to Hitron for investigation.

Unexpected modem reboot

Some customers reported their modem reboots unexpectedly. We have also seen this behavior in our lab.

Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2

Missing SC-QAM Channels

After a reboot, some modems are missing SC-QAM channels. A fix has been implemented in 2.0.10.26T2 to address this behavior but it has not corrected all scenarios.

Investigation continues with Hitron.

WiFi Survey

The WiFi Survey functionality in firmware 2.0.10.26T2 (and possibly before) reports incorrect SSID names.

Guest Network

When connecting to the Guest Network, an error message is displayed "only allow DHCP client to use this wireless".  This has been reported in firmware 2.0.10.26T2.

Update April 22: This issue has been resolved in firmware 2.0.10.27

Update May 2: It seems this issue is not fully resolved and still experienced by some users

Future Planned Improvements

The following are items that we are working on in parallel of the above.

  • Improvement in WiFi speeds
  • Improvement in latency / bufferbloat

CODA-4582 reboots when Huawei P10 connects to 2.4G Wi-Fi

This one had me stumped pretty bad. Wondering why my internet dropped every time my friend's new Huawei P10 attempted to join the network.

Model: CODA-4582

Hardware Version: 1A

MAC: xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx

Current Firmware: 2.0.10.33T3

We've tested on two separate occasions, around 5x each. The last 3 times today, I sat with `ping 8.8.8.8` running and had her connect to WiFi.  Immediately I got "Request timeout for icmp_seq nnn". Having her disconnect herself from WiFi at this point is too late and I watch the router reboot itself and come back online in ~3min. We can then repeat and reproduce the issue, although sometimes it takes up to 60sec before it times out.

I have never seen this before and not sure how to proceed. I consider myself pretty technically savvy and am clueless. I'm hoping maybe @RogersDave can shed some light on this... Is her phone's MAC buffer overflowing my router? Smiley Very Happy

My friend's phone details:

Model: Huawei P10, VTR-L09

Android Version: 7.0

Please help, this is a sucky thing to try and diagnose 😞

We have not heard from Rogers on this.  I'd say that this is important.  How can you attract their attention?

Perhaps you should start a new topic.  Maybe they would notice.

Perhaps you could phone Rogers Support.

Any other ideas?

Guest network -- only allow DHCP client to use this wireless

I enabled the guest network in my Rogers modem.   The devices connected but once it entered the password it displayed "Only allow DHCP client to use this wireless".

Can someone direct me the procedure to verify and configure the modem to allow guest access?

The modem I am using is CODA-4582U (hardware version 1A); software version 2.0.10.28T2

Thanks for your help.

Hello @wpak,

Welcome to the Community Forums, and thanks for reaching out.

It can be totally inconvenient to be unable to use the guest network when you need it. As of this post, it was reported that some users were still experiencing issues with guest network on the firmware previous to yours.

Have you considered joining the Rogers Rocket Modem Firmware Trial?  You can enroll by sending a PM to @CommunityHelps. For more information on our Private Message system, check out this page

@f3ndot that is too bad. Thanks for letting me know, I've looked everywhere online and doesn't look too promising. Very weird..

Re: CODA-4582 - Open Issues for Investigation

My router upgraded to 2.0.10.34T5 firmware. However, the Guest network still give out the "only allow DHCP client to use this wireless" message.

Just wonder if it still an open issue or it is my setup problem?

Hi,

I have been following the threads on losing sync on the CODA-4582.  Up until last week I have had no connection issues and been getting download speeds in the 850Mbs range. We had a significant power outage in our area, and now I can't get more than 210Mbps down, and the downstream indicator is light blue instead of the bright blue.  I had a tech come out and he changed my splitter and then told me that the colours on the modem do not matter because the LED's fade.

I questioned him about signal loss as I wondered if that could be the lock issue and he said that my tap was down 5 or 6 dB and there was a 3dB loss from there to the house.  He stated that he would put in a service ticket for my tap but it could be weeks until they come.  Is there any way for me to confirm that a ticket was placed?

With the power outage I am also wondering if it is worth changing the mode?  I do have it on a UPS but I do not have the feed coming through it.

@qwerk007

If you look at the modem, does the Downstream and Upstream both show Blue? that means the modem is running in DOCSIS 3.0 Mode. If the Downstream is a bright/light/purplish colour then the modem is running in DOCSIS 3.1 on the downstream (Normal Mode). Regardless you need a tech visit because you're out've spec on Channel 14, so call Rogers and have them do a signal check, the check will fail because you're signal is too low.

Re: CODA-4582 - Open Issues for Investigation

qwerk007
I plan to stick around

Thanks @gp-se

The downstream is a light blue/purple and the upstream is a bright blue (up until last week both were bright blue).  I had a tech come and he ran a signal test.  He said that there is an issue outside and a ticket would be placed.  I noticed that a couple of other houses close to me had techs show up, so I am hoping that will bump up the priority. We have had flooding issues with our neighbourhood in ground box (last year they came and replaced a bunch of rusty components) and we have had quite a bit of rain. I assume that since I am out of spec on 14 which looks like it maps to Channel ID 1, that is probably the reason why I either get slow speed or completely lose Internet for periods of time?

Thanks again for the response 🙂

Re: CODA-4582 - Open Issues for Investigation

@qwerk007, the biggest problem that you have is the lower frequency response below 500 Mhz.  That port ID 14 at 303 Mhz is either above or below the OFDM channel, which is 192 Mhz wide to support 4k DOCSIS 3.1.  Compared to the DOCSIS 3.0 channels running above 500 Mhz, that port 14 is very low and while still in spec (theoretically), could result in a performance penalty if the modem was running DOCSIS 3.0 on the downstream side.  One can probably consider that DOCSIS 3.0 channel as a good indicator of the health of the DOCSIS 3.1 OFDM channel, as the OFDM data is not entirely correct in the user interface.  Your modem is running DOCSIS 3.1 on the downstream side, so, if you're seeing poor performance from the modem, that low signal level would certainly explain it.  The upstream DOCSIS 3.0 channels aren't too bad, but channel 2, which is the highest channel in terms of frequency is running at a slightly higher power level than the other 2 channels.  So, my guess is that your local tap and possibly your underground cabling need some attention to get the 0 to 500 Mhz performance back to where it should be.  When the work is done, have a look for that 303 Mhz DOCSIS 3.0 channel and see if its back up around 0 dBmV where it should be.  That should be a good indicator of whether or not to expect reasonable performance out of the DOCSIS 3.1 OFDM channel.

CODA-4582U Rogers Slow Download with Google Playstore Apps on Android?

Does anyone else notice that downloading Apps from the Playstore on Android takes forever on Android (sometimes as slow as 100kb/sec)?

I've tried multiple phones, my other house, friends house which all have Rogers, disabled IPv6, ran phone(s) in safemode, tried with Rogers router/thirdparty routers, multiple different DNS servers; still slow.

Phones tried:

Pixel 2 XL

Samsung Galaxy S9+

Nexus 6P

I have another internet line (non rogers company), which I will max my download speed constantly (downloading apps at 40-50MB/sec from the play store), LTE+ I will download apps at 10-15MB/sec as well. I rarely see above 3MB/sec when downloading/updating apps on ANY Rogers network.

I think I've eliminated the possibility of it being a problem on my end since 3 houses with rogers internet on 3-5 different high-end phones all have this same issue. I'm pretty sure there is an issue between Rogers and Googles Playstore CDN servers, but I have no way to prove this theory.

Does anyone else have this issue? I have the Ignite Gigabit (1000 down 30 up) plan.

I think you're correct. I was wondering this as well and I tested downloading Hitman Sniper from the Playstore (509MB) and its taking more than 10+ minutes to download it, despite being on the 100u package. I'm noticing the same speeds you are experiencing. The same problem also happens when I download PUBG MOBILE. Note that this was done on the S7 with the March 2018 security patch.

It's possible that there could be some routing error which could be causing these slow speeds we are experiencing.

@RogersSergio @RogersBob Maybe you guys can take a look into this?

Downloading from the PSN store through WiFi might just be another problem itself, because the PSN servers are notorious for being slow, which could be caused by a DL speed limitation posed by PSN servers, unless this has only been happening recently.

EDIT: I downloaded Fortnite on the Apple App Store on my IPad and despite it being 109MB, it downloaded in only 30s, which is significantly faster than the download from the Google Play Store; I'm pretty certain there are some routing issues b/w Rogers and the Google Play download servers that should be looked into.

Re: CODA-4582 - Open Issues for Investigation

@RyzenFX the playstation download I was referring to was wired ethernet. My phones are the only Wifi device in my house. Everything else is wired.

I am just wondering if you have figured the solution or fix out yet?

I was running the Orbi AC3000 Perfectly for 4 months. Never used bridge mode. Had perfect wifi everywhere and worked just as advertised.

But recently it stopped working, there is a sign saying no internet connection to the router and no internet connection to the modem. Yet when I reboot it and unplug the Orbi router, there will be internet coming into the Rogers modem/router. As soon as I plug the Orbi into the modem, no internet to either.

I replaced the modem and still no luck. Any solution yet?
