Good morning Community,

 

As I mentioned in a post two days ago, we have received the next firmware 2.0.10.20 from Hitron. We are currently running initial testing on this version and will push it out to participants in the firmware trial program as soon as it passes initial testing.

 

However, while running these tests, we discovered abnormal behavior with ICMP and are awaiting feedback from Hitron today to asses how this will be addressed. As soon as I this is confirmed, I’ll update the change log with the correct version information and start pushing it out.

 

In parallel, we are still working on the following high priority items. In some cases below, I requested affected customers to reach out to me via private message. If you do so, please include your modem MAC address in the subject line (even if we exchange messages daily) as there are a lot of you reaching out to me daily 🙂

 

UDP Packet Loss

The investigation for what has been reported as UDP packet loss is still ongoing. We have deployed a probe at one fellow forum member on both a CODA-4582 and a CGNM-3552 to collect additional data. We are actively working with Hitron and Intel on the results observed.

 

Based on what we know so far, in most instances UDP packet loss is coupled with higher uplink usage in the area. Although the impact is noticeable in specific logs (League of Legends), the root cause for the perceivable impact (while playing) is likely related to bufferbloat (see next issue).

 

 

Bufferbloat

When comparing the performance of a CODA-4582 to a CGNM-3552 in the same network conditions, the CODA-4582 consistently reports higher bufferbloat when tested on DSLReports.

 

Update April 12: The solution for this problem will come in two folds. It will require a change in software which will possibly be included in 2.0.10.27 but more likely in 2.0.10.28 and a change in network configuration.

 

The network configuration change is not compatible with the current firmware so this change will only come after a vast majority of the modems are running the new code. We are however looking at a way to make the change only for specific modems to support testing in the community.

 

Update April 22: This problem seems resolved in firmware 2.0.10.27

 

 

5 GHz WiFi Low range for channels 36 to 48

Lower WiFi channels on the modem have a much smaller range. This is due in part to the limit imposed by Industry Canada to maximum transmit power.

 

Furthermore, the current automatic channel selection (auto mode) tends to select the lower channels when in similar load conditions.

 

Workaround: manually select higher channels (149-153-157-161)

 

Update April 22: The channel selection algorithm has been improved in firmware 2.0.10.27

 

 

Loss of OFDM Channel Lock

Under some RF conditions, the modem fails to lock properly on the OFDM channel. This typically result in variable performance.

 

Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2

 

 

List of connected device does not get fully populated

This is a known issue that has been tracked since firmware 2.0.10.13. We are making improvements at every firmware but it is not a perfect system.

 

The situation is worst after a reboot or firmware upgrade as the list gets reset and must be repopulated as devices renew their DHCP lease.

 

 

NAT Loopback not working for wired clients

When setting up port forwarding to an internal server, it is possible for a client on WiFi to reach the server using the external IP/port. If the client is on a wired interface, it doesn't work.

 

Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2 (not confirmed)

 

 

LAN Counters not working

Some customers reported that LAN counters (especially in bridge mode) are reporting inaccurate values.

 

This problem has been reported to Hitron for investigation.

 

 

Unexpected modem reboot

Some customers reported their modem reboots unexpectedly. We have also seen this behavior in our lab.

 

Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2

 

 

Missing SC-QAM Channels

After a reboot, some modems are missing SC-QAM channels. A fix has been implemented in 2.0.10.26T2 to address this behavior but it has not corrected all scenarios.

 

Investigation continues with Hitron.

 

 

WiFi Survey

The WiFi Survey functionality in firmware 2.0.10.26T2 (and possibly before) reports incorrect SSID names.

 

 

Guest Network

When connecting to the Guest Network, an error message is displayed "only allow DHCP client to use this wireless".  This has been reported in firmware 2.0.10.26T2.

 

Update April 22: This issue has been resolved in firmware 2.0.10.27

Update May 2: It seems this issue is not fully resolved and still experienced by some users


 

Future Planned Improvements

The following are items that we are working on in parallel of the above.

  • Improvement in WiFi speeds
  • Improvement in latency / bufferbloat

@RogersDave I have an issue with the coda 4582 where I have to keep resetting it to stay connected. I woke up this morning and everything said it was connected but nothing worked. Reset and was fine. Then came home this afternoon and same thing. Reset then fine. Also I have noticed my devices connected that are wired to the Ethernet ports drop connection and wont reconnect unless again I reset this modem.

I would goto the closest Rogers store and exchange the modem.

Sorry, perhaps I oversimplified 🙂

 

If you run your own DHCP server, you can have it not give you IPV6 addresses to any devices on your network, effectively blocking them from using IPV6.

 

Or, at least, that's the theory that I've heard here. I decided to test it, and to my surprise it doesn't appear to be that way.

 

I have the DHCP on the modem (in regular router mode) turned off, and my own DHCP running internally.  I have a laptop which I just turned on IPV6, and it's still getting a usable address.

 

Does this mean that, for IPV6, effectively, we're on one big open network segment, and the Rogers' servers are directly able to respond to DHCP requests from inside my network?

There's a difference between a DHCP server (IPv4) and a DHCPv6 server (IPv6).

So, you could disable a DHCP server on your network, preventing clients from getting an IPv4 address, yet still have a DHCPv6 server operational.

 

Also,

 

There are multiple ways to get an IPv6 address, manually and automatically.

For Automatic assignment, devices use the Neighbor Discovery Protocol.  Through the ICMPv6 Router Advertisement, clients learn of IPv6 address assignment: either StateLess Address AutoConfiguration (SLAAC) or Stateful DHCPv6.

 

So, with a RA set to SLAAC-only, clients could get an IPv6 address, even if both your DHCP server & your DHCPv6 server were disabled.  With a RA set to DHCPv6-only, clients would only get an IPv6 address if your DHCPv6 server was running.  With a RA set to both, some clients would get both a SLAAC address & a DHCPv6 address (Android only uses SLAAC, Win10 uses both).

 

Thus, in your case, disabling your DHCP servers (IPv4) still allows the client to get an RA from the gateway, and hence how the client is getting an IPv6 address.

Just a simple question - are we still in beta testing of the CODA-4582 as a whole, or just a particular version of firmware?

 

Is their a production firmware version going out on the various Hitron Devices, starting from the oldest to the newest devices.

 

I ask this because this thread has been going on for a long time, we have had various threads on the various versions of Hitron out there, and I have also lost track of just what we are looking at in various devices and versions.

 

We seem to be wandering all over the place on these threads, ranging from UDP issues, latency issues, download speeds, upload speeds, the move to max 30 up from 50 up in the early days and rationalle of this change (limitation of the modem?), WIFI standards related to 2.4, the hidden SSID (which I think I read recently in a research that the hidden SSID allows for the directionality focusing of signals as it can direct the signal from the return signal of the hidden SSID and balance it to get the best direction off the multiple antennas.)

 

And although there has been a lot of speed and the issue of 2.4 WIFI and overlap on channels, I have learned that if you want to go to the lower speeds (no we don't all need these higher speeds), and on the two lower packages, they provide the old modems that did not have dual band, so you will need to upgrade to a higher speed package to get the modem with a dual band WIFI, or buy your own router (me, I would just buy a router given my distaste for the Hitron routers, given their obvious limited capabilities - you get what we pay for - a low end router and modem), and discussions on security, firewalling, and IPv6 versus 4.

 

Any possibility of getting the current production and beta firmware levels on each of the modem/gateways that Rogers is providing to us?

Had a similar issue when I got the CODA. What firmware are you on?

Yes I am gaming with the CODA modem as of 3 weeks ago. My area is D3.1 enabled & I have been doing testing since I got the modem. I have CSGO & LoL on my Macbook pro but generally only game on PC for testing purposes. I'm pretty busy so I don't have a chance to game as frequently as some as the other folks on here.

 

  • For PS4 I have been playing GTA online recently but have many other games. I haven't had issues with this game, I find online sessions very quickly with good amounts of people and haven't had lag / degraded performance on the open map. Personal opinion Rockstar has poor matching making when looking for other players to take part in missions etc,,, which has been around since the game came out. As of recently I admit it looks the match matching isn't as bad as it was before. Chatting with some gamers last year in the US they said it takes a while for them to find players for missions as well. 
  • For Xbox One S I have been playing Madden 2017 online ran a few games last weekend. It was very smooth & I only noticed a stutter once.
  • I just downloaded CSGO last week for testing purposes. I was getting 40ms to 55ping. I am new to CSGO and haven't played that much though.

I am also doing a bunch of speed testing / overall testing. Look out for my post in the feedback thread as I will posting some results from various devices (wired & wireless)

 

What games are you playing & how is performance ? I have folks internally that I can share feedback & am happy to test more games out.

To confirm the if symptoms were the same as mine...Does your problem sound like below ? 

 

  1. Devices would show connected to WIFI(ex. Iphone / smart tv)
  2. Although showing connected, they aren't able to browse
  3. Reboot generally fixes the issues but then it does come back 

From what I recall the issue only affected WIFI. In one scenario my wifi devices weren't working but ethernet was still working.

 

Is it the same for you ?

Excellent, thank you for the explanation.

 

I was vaguely aware of the auto configuration options, and thought they were disabled, but upon closer inspection of the laptop I think you're right.
