Good morning Community,

As I mentioned in a post two days ago, we have received the next firmware 2.0.10.20 from Hitron. We are currently running initial testing on this version and will push it out to participants in the firmware trial program as soon as it passes initial testing.

However, while running these tests, we discovered abnormal behavior with ICMP and are awaiting feedback from Hitron today to asses how this will be addressed. As soon as I this is confirmed, I’ll update the change log with the correct version information and start pushing it out.

In parallel, we are still working on the following high priority items. In some cases below, I requested affected customers to reach out to me via private message. If you do so, please include your modem MAC address in the subject line (even if we exchange messages daily) as there are a lot of you reaching out to me daily 🙂

UDP Packet Loss

The investigation for what has been reported as UDP packet loss is still ongoing. We have deployed a probe at one fellow forum member on both a CODA-4582 and a CGNM-3552 to collect additional data. We are actively working with Hitron and Intel on the results observed.

Based on what we know so far, in most instances UDP packet loss is coupled with higher uplink usage in the area. Although the impact is noticeable in specific logs (League of Legends), the root cause for the perceivable impact (while playing) is likely related to bufferbloat (see next issue).

Bufferbloat

When comparing the performance of a CODA-4582 to a CGNM-3552 in the same network conditions, the CODA-4582 consistently reports higher bufferbloat when tested on DSLReports.

Update April 12: The solution for this problem will come in two folds. It will require a change in software which will possibly be included in 2.0.10.27 but more likely in 2.0.10.28 and a change in network configuration.

The network configuration change is not compatible with the current firmware so this change will only come after a vast majority of the modems are running the new code. We are however looking at a way to make the change only for specific modems to support testing in the community.

Update April 22: This problem seems resolved in firmware 2.0.10.27

5 GHz WiFi Low range for channels 36 to 48

Lower WiFi channels on the modem have a much smaller range. This is due in part to the limit imposed by Industry Canada to maximum transmit power.

Furthermore, the current automatic channel selection (auto mode) tends to select the lower channels when in similar load conditions.

Workaround: manually select higher channels (149-153-157-161)

Update April 22: The channel selection algorithm has been improved in firmware 2.0.10.27

Loss of OFDM Channel Lock

Under some RF conditions, the modem fails to lock properly on the OFDM channel. This typically result in variable performance.

Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2

List of connected device does not get fully populated

This is a known issue that has been tracked since firmware 2.0.10.13. We are making improvements at every firmware but it is not a perfect system.

The situation is worst after a reboot or firmware upgrade as the list gets reset and must be repopulated as devices renew their DHCP lease.

NAT Loopback not working for wired clients

When setting up port forwarding to an internal server, it is possible for a client on WiFi to reach the server using the external IP/port. If the client is on a wired interface, it doesn't work.

Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2 (not confirmed)

LAN Counters not working

Some customers reported that LAN counters (especially in bridge mode) are reporting inaccurate values.

This problem has been reported to Hitron for investigation.

Unexpected modem reboot

Some customers reported their modem reboots unexpectedly. We have also seen this behavior in our lab.

Update April 12: This problem is resolved in 2.0.10.26T2

Missing SC-QAM Channels

After a reboot, some modems are missing SC-QAM channels. A fix has been implemented in 2.0.10.26T2 to address this behavior but it has not corrected all scenarios.

Investigation continues with Hitron.

WiFi Survey

The WiFi Survey functionality in firmware 2.0.10.26T2 (and possibly before) reports incorrect SSID names.

Guest Network

When connecting to the Guest Network, an error message is displayed "only allow DHCP client to use this wireless".  This has been reported in firmware 2.0.10.26T2.

Update April 22: This issue has been resolved in firmware 2.0.10.27

Update May 2: It seems this issue is not fully resolved and still experienced by some users

Future Planned Improvements

The following are items that we are working on in parallel of the above.

  • Improvement in WiFi speeds
  • Improvement in latency / bufferbloat

Dave

Anything which had a STATIC IPv4 addres, was fine.
The issue seemed to be with devices which were on dynamic.. and getting both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses?
And from what i could find.. very little control over the v6 DHCP in the modem itself?

There are known issues with inactivity and the DHCP server stops working.

Correct, the modem is ill-equipped to handle IPV6. Combined with local devices now getting public IPV6 addresses I think this is extremely concerning. Many (most?) IoT style devices have basically zero security. Placing these on public addresses is going to be a disaster for security.

If i remember correctly, IPv6 can be disabled in the wireless settings, for wireless devices and theres also some settings under Firewall related to IPv6. I been lucky i guess, all my devices work ok.

@RogersDave I'm having the same disconnects with my Moto Z Phone as well since IPv6 so I don't think it's only the Pixel XL.

Also my Upload has not been great as well since IPv6 has been enabled. I was getting over 40Mbps before.

On Beta .24 I was getting 3days+ of uptime! but since the introduction of IPV6 it reboot during the night, not sure if it's related or if it's just a coincidence. I will continue to monitor.

Like clockwork, around 6.20PM and 4.20 am would get reboots. I did full reset, had to setup wireless again (some settings stayed) and its been up for almost  2 days.

If u dont mind possibly wasting some time, try a full reset.

Probably just a coincidence. A few days before .24 my modem was rebooting almost every night. I think Rogers is doing work/tweaking the CMTS causing the modem to reboot.

@tonytoronto

You cannot disable IPV6, even under the firewall settings you can disable http access, but the phone is still getting an ipv6 address.

Unable to browse websites while downloading.

I recently upgraded to the new Rogers Hitron CODA-4582 and while it is faster than the CGN3, I am unable to browse any website while downloading in the background.  I connect to Usenet and use about 60 threads and get around 95 MB/s which is a bit faster than the CGN3, but websites fail to load with the error "This website took too long to respond".  With the CGN3 I would get about 85 MB/s but websites opened in a snap and I could download files, with my Usenet speed dropping (this is how it is supposed to work) I looked in the 4582 and I don't see any options for QOS (I think that is what it is called)

I have a fast computer with multiple Samsung 950 Pro drives. I don't use a router and am at a loss at what is going on.

Hello All

My purchased CGN3 modem died  a couple of days ago so I got myself CODA-4582.

Upon running it from the past two days I notice that compared to the 5 GHz band, the 2.4 is really slow (down to 10 Mbps at times. I get over 300 Mbps If I use 5 GHz!!

Is this normal?? I understand that compared to 2.4, the 5 GHz band has a shorter range but should they not be transmitting radio signals at the same speed?

I was not having this issue with the CGN3 that died.

Thanks.

CODA-4582 High Jitter, Poor Internet Experience

Alance
I've been here awhile

Hi all,

I have been encountering the same network issues recently, resulting in a number of CODA-4582 modem replacements. Some replacements are better than others but the problems generally remain the same. I have the Ignite 250u package, and my download speeds regularly reach max speed, however when I ping a website, or perform a speed test on the Rogers speed test page, I have jitter that varies from 4ms to 70ms+. I also appear to be experiencing packet loss. Often times this makes gaming or streaming a truly terrible experience as whatever I am doing will intermittently stop or fail, resulting in rubber banding or misfires in online games, and sudden stops in buffering/streaming. I've noticed that some other users post their DOCSIS WAN information, and looking over their information in relation to mine, it seems like my Upstream Signal Strength is lower than most of the other users.

Here is my information below:

Is there an issue with my upstream that could be causing my jitter and packet loss? If not, is there anything I can do to improve my experience? I am wired into the Ethernet port with the Wireless networks disabled. The CODA-4582 has firmware 2.0.10.24.

Thank you all for your time.

I'm also suffering the same issue as you, jitter varies, sudden stops while streaming, and packet loss.

Is there some sort of UDP latency w/ the CODA 4582?

I currently have a ticket open srating that noise on my node is causing my upload speed to take a dip, aswell as jitter. It's very annoying during peak hours where noise is the most- and I have yet to get and update stating that they've fixed it. @RogersDave

While they are 'within spec', they are still in the low side.  Might account for SOME, but not all of the issue.

Where are you doing the speed test on? (rogers one or a 3rd party, and what endpoint server then)

And wired or wireless?

coda in gateway mode  and coda bridged to my router = same speeds (no difference)
