Brutal latency/ping Recently

I am wired, with the gigabit package and all of the sudden have gotten constant ping spikes for over the last few days. I haven't been able to play any games online because the crazy ping spikes and latency make it completely unplayable. My speeds are what they are expected to be, no issues there. I have tried hard wiring straight into the modem but alas, the issue still persists. I have tried switching cables, power cycling my devices, factory resetting my devices. The issue still persists. I have called and contacted Rogers multiple times and they say everything seems fine on their end. But still, the issue persists and is steady. resulting in me not able to use any of my gaming devices due to the brutal and constant ping spikes. It's frustrating paying over $100 a month for internet I cant use for the things I want it for. Any help or suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. Thank you

Ok, for those who are still up and around, and have some time to run an experiment, try the following to run a quick test for UDP losses, which is more applicable to gaming:

1.  Download DNSBenchmark from:  https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm

Create a folder somewhere and store that DNSBench.exe file in the folder.

2.  Copy the DNS addresses at the bottom and paste that into a notepad or Notepad++ document.  Save that in the same folder as the Benchmark program with the name dnsbench.ini    Note this needs to be saved as a text document with the name dnsbench.ini

Select the Dnsbench.exe file to run the program.  When its running, select Nameservers to see the DNS address list and hit the Run Benchmark button on the right.  

That takes about 1 to 2 minutes to run.  When its done, select tabular data to see the results.  There is a Copy button on the lower left to copy the entire page.  Please post just table, no bottom paragraphs, if you're seeing latency and packet loss in game.  What I'd like to see at this point is the results from the cached servers.  Typically there should be no loss, but, it will be interesting to see the results. 

Those results essentially show the DNS cached name test losses, which are basically a direct correlation to the UDP losses.  Since gaming typically uses UDP, this is an applicable test to see what losses you encounter within and outside of the Rogers network.  The results also show Uncached Name and Dotcom Lookup, where the results also include time required to process the request.  Typically they should be at 100% as well, but, they can be slower and you can see slightly higher losses compared to the Cached Name results.  Keep in mind, this is only a quick snapshot in time.  To really do this correctly, you need to run a DNS query throughout the day and plot the response times and look for losses.  That's a Wireshark endeavour that I need to write up for all to use.

Note:  as usual, items don't paste into the forum as expected.  I've deleted the DNS owners from each line as the forum software isn't respecting the "tab" spacing.  The DnsBenchmark should figure them out. When the test is done, hit the Add-Remove button to bring up the menu and hit Save Nameservers to .INI file

This program was built to time Domain Name Server responses around the world.  If you run the program without a .ini file, it will grab the latest available list which is very large.  If you run the Benchmark after that initial DNS load, it will take at least half an hour if not more to run.  For the purposes of what we're trying to do here, using local servers, including the Rogers servers is more appropriate to the task at hand. You can add or remove DNS addresses as you desire by using the Add/Remove function.  Remember to save the Nameservers to the .INI file when you're done with any modifications.

Note this will not work if you happen to use Merlins's Asuswrt with the Global Filtering active, or if you have a DNS server on your own LAN.  What is required is the ability for the program to send the test DNS queries directly to the servers in the test list, without being intercepted by the router or LAN DNS.

I've been having the same issue since the Beginning of January.

15+ calls to Rogers Technical support, 4 technicians so far no one has fixed it. Switched providers and made a complaint with Rogers Office of the President. Was advised that maintenance rolled out and resolved the issue and was convinced it was resolved but because I was no longer a customer I could not "confirm". Switched back and low and behold, same issue (no issues with Bell btw) and so far no help from anyone (even the office of the president has told me to speak with a specific someone which they also cannot force Rogers to "fix" the issue)

It seems like the Rogers Technical support agents cannot "see" the issue when they run their tests on the modem, which makes sense if this is somehow DNS related (I might be an ex-employee that worked in technical support for them but who knows?)

So far I've noticed this: The issue does not happen a lot during the week but does appear after 5PM EST. On the weekends it's extremely bad. Unfortunately I did not have time to read this entire thread ( I will try Saturday) but I will assist with this to help shed some light on this.

@Raveneire welcome to the thread.  Wish it was under better circumstances 🙂  Your results don't look too bad at all from what I can see.  

I don't believe that the problem is DNS related.  What I want to do with this test is look for UDP losses.  The test is designed to time the responses to find the fastest server from your location and determine the losses.  At this point I'm not 100% interested in the response times, but, its worth looking at the Rogers DNS times for the .204 and .198 servers.  In your case, the times look fairly typical.  The .198 server has always been slow from Ottawa, but I expect everyone to have slightly different results.  

At this point I'm more interested in whether or not there is significant UDP losses within the Rogers network when there is latency and packet loss ingame, and whether or not there are high losses for external Domain Name Servers.  Once you cross the ISP boundary all bets are off, but, its reasonable to expect very low losses from external servers.  

So, this might be a starting point to look for UDP losses.  The right way to do this is to run a DNS query throughout the day, just like an ICMP ping test.  That's coming down the road.

Thanks, I've been at my wits end regarding this for the past 2 months, completely forgot about the forums but it's good (but also not good) to see I'm not the only one in this mess right now.

I'll continue to run the benchmark throughout tomorrow. I also have a technician booked for the evening between 4-6. I'm hoping the issue is present then so they can get some actually eyes on it for once.

@Datalink I'm not sure how reliable the benchmark tool will be, as I only seem to get ping spikes/timeouts very sporadically now. I will run it if I encounter another period of insane lag/timeouts however.

Speaking of which, I also reran the ping test to Rogers' IPv6 DNS server. 1 timeout and a high of 105ms (coupled with a second ping of 98ms). I don't remember my stream cutting out at the time, however, so it's hard to say if this correlates with the lag as much as the google.com ping tests do.

This current problem affects Rogers and TPIA customers as well.  Personal opinion, the tech won't be able to do anything for you unless you have an issue with your external cabling.  

Run a trace to anywhere and then use the second IP address (CMTS) as a ping target.  If your modem is in Gateway mode with a direct connection or Bridge mode with a router behind it in full router mode, then the second IP address will be the CMTS.  Not trying to insult your experience or skills as an ex tech here 🙂

Let that ping run for at least an hour, looking for packet loss.  If you have a white CODA-4582 modem, you can't use the CMTS for latency testing due to an internal modem timing issue which produces high (false) return times from the CMTS.   You can use the CMTS for packet loss testing however, which is typically caused by external cable and/or connector problems.  

To test for latency, run an extended ping test to the Rogers Primary IPV4 DNS:  64.71.255.204   You should not see large packet losses from the DNS, although other customers have seen that.  I haven't so far, so this problem appears to be limited to some areas around Toronto and out in the Atlantic region for some reason.  

So, fwiw, I'd run ping tests tomorrow prior to the tech arriving.  Running a ping test to the CMTS should show whether or not there is a possible external cable issue.  You shouldn't see packet loss from the CMTS. 

So, if you ran an extended ping test to the CMTS, and saw no packet loss, and then pinged the DNS with a large packet loss indication, that points to a CMTS or network problem.  The field techs can't do anything about that.  At this point its up to the network engineering staff to solve this.  

Of course, all of these test should be run via ethernet  🙂

I actually just saw that post (started the read the thread backwards)

This is quite the situation their in right now if it's widespread between TPIA and customers on the Rogers Network itself. The last time I saw something at this scale was when they bricked all the Rogers Modems in Brampton with an accidental FW release at 2am in the morning.

That was intense.

I've run the ping tests already, the packet loss is around 20%-40% and with a max latency of around 3500ms tops to 64.71.255.204. Ping back to the CMTS is slightly intermittent, I believe this may be related to some noise on one of my upstream channels but not sure, can't really look at it myself but that's what technical support has told me over the phone.

It's interesting that there's an issue with GTA + ATL. There was once an issue where all static IP customers in ATL region could not connect back to headend last year, turns out it was a bad configuration file loaded on a CMTS that was not allowing the static IP configuration files to download to the Rogers Modems. There was also a critical issue at North York headend where "something" happened and servers were offline for a few minutes in both GTA and ATL. It makes me think there could be an issue with a headend server is 2 regions are affected.

Purely speculation at this point, and I doubt we'll ever know when it does get fixed.

Started experiencing very high latency as of Friday. It's getting to a point where my internet keeps dropping every few minutes and I am unable to do anything whether it is browsing the web or playing games online (WoW). Contacted support and I was told they did not detect anything abnormal at first. Then some odd readings were detected after "extensive tests." The support rep. was unable to solve the issue and ended up opening a case to investigate the issue which can take up to 48 hrs or so I am told.

I am hoping this is resolved soon because this is ridiculous.

For the ditchwitch question, I'm not 100% sure as they did it while I was at work ( and I forgot to check my security cams 😞 ), but I do remember seeing one around the corner on an adjacent street.  They haven't fully finished either as there are sand filled holes (for the individual connects??) between the houses a couple of inches in from the sidewalk.

This is super frustrating as I don't really want to swap providers (we even use Rogers business fiber at my workplace and my cell phones have always been on your networks and I've been on Rogers cable/internet since '97, but, if this is going to keep impacting my avid gaming and streaming family of 5 there may be no choice.

I've also been getting insane ping spikes (200-999) while gaming for the last two weeks here in St. John's, NL.  I have a tech coming on Monday to replace my technicolor modem.  Apparently all nodes in my area are fine as is the signal from the pole to my house.  Once my modem is replaced, I'll update this post with my results.  this is the first time I've ever had ping spikes with Rogers and I've been with them for a  quite awhile.
