SIM Scamming

JTM1
I'm here a lot
I got a phone line package from a door to door sales in Kamloops his name is Diluka and he based in Vancouver. I realized he scammed me and now i have a huge bill for no reason.

1. He told me theres 200$ credit in my account which i can use to pay my bill
2. He said he would cancel the package once i travel out of the country since i told him ill be traveling by end of April
3. He said incase i want to use roaming its already included in the package and didnt mention i would be charged 15$ everyday

I realized i was being scammed by him last month when he finally admitted he cant cancel my plan and all that time he was telling me he would “sort” my bill and “not to worry about it”

I had one of my friends in kamloops go to Aberdeen mall to talk to a person in rogers and they said i would get a suspension fee but i wont be charged for my package anymore since i took the SIM out of my phone in May.

However i got charged again this month for my package and im frustrated since i havent been using any of the service since May. And i cant call to cancel my line since i was afraid of getting charged but that was useless since i got charged anyways and now my line is suspended.

I feel fully completely scammed by rogers.

Good morning @JTM1,

Welcome to the Community!

It's disappointing to read about your experience with our field sales rep. If you'd like we can forward this message to the individual's manager and it can serve as a coaching oppurtunity.

As for your line and billing, I have a few questions:

1) How long are you out of the country for?

2) Do you know if you're on a temporary travel suspension with a monthly fee?

3) Are you still looking to cancel the line?

Just as an FYI, if you're not on a temporary suspension plan, taking the SIM out will only prevent roaming charges. Any applicable monthly charges will still apply.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Normally once a Sales agent activates you, their job is done. If you want any account changes, you do not contact the "sales" person anymore you would need to contact "customer service". Its like this for every phone company and it has been this way for a very long time.  The sales agent should just stick to doing his "Sales" job for you and not make extra promises. He or she should also not tell you to contact them if you have trouble as its not their job.

Also its a good idea to get all the details upfront of how a monthly cell phone plan works, it bills you every month even if you do not use the service,  if you do not want this, there is another service called Prepaid, formerly known as Pay As You Go. it only bills you for the airtime you use.  Make sure you are very clear on what services the sales agent is offering and what services you actually want.

Consumers should be very educated and do their research and homework BEFORE they make a sale or purchase.

There could be cancellation fees involved too so please ask or inquire about this upfront BEFORE you sign up to anything, as sometimes it may be an unexpected high charge to cancel.

Re: SIM Scamming

I’m out of the country until August. The sales rep told me he would cancel my line and give me a new SIM once I came back however I realized he didn’t do anything when I was getting my monthly bills. I had my friend go to Roger’s in Aberdeen Mall and after hearing my situation they said to contact Rogers and they could take out the Temporary Suspension fee since I cancelled my SIM this week. However I’m not able to reach Rogers anymore since my line is cancelled.

I do take accountability for some of what happened however I’m new to all of this since I’m an International student and this is my first year in Canada.

I previously used Fido and I had excellent service from them where there wasn’t any extra charges like this and when I went abroad I wasn’t being charged once I took out the SIM and where I’m from that’s usually the case.

I also questioned the Sales agent in all the services I needed like cancelling my SIM once I went out of the country. And the only reason I bought the SIM was because he said he would be able to do everything I asked of him. I wasn’t aware that Sales agents lie like this and shouldn’t be trusted. This is my first experience like this in Canada.

Also when I asked Roger’s in Aberdeen mall they said I wouldn’t be charged anymore once I took the SIM out but I realized that wasn’t the case when I got my monthly charge again this month. I understand I should be doing my research however I’m shocked that I keep getting lied by Rogers agents again and again. And why have people in stores and doors when I’m only getting accurate information through community chats like this.

Hello JTM1,

Just letting you know, most people living in Ontario have had problems with Door to Door sales, so we tend to ignore these solicitations.  Its not just door to door selling cellphone service, they tried selling other services like water tanks furnaces, newspaper subscriptions, duct cleaning, charities, etc,  we just flat out dont answer anymore.  If we are interested in Cell Phone service, most Ontarios will just go into a Cellphone store in person and deal with the agent there because you can walk out with a working phone, you get proper documentation about your transaction, etc.   Not saying its better choice, but it is often preferable by many, including myself and my family.

I clicked on the link however I don't know how to send a PM, if you could please guide me on how to do it.
