Can't create App password

eltbrown
I've been here awhile

When I tried to generate an App password to connect to Outlook.

I receive the following message:

Something went wrong on our end. Please try again later.

I tried calling Rogers Support I was told I would have to wait between 20 to 30 mins...

Not happy!

Minor clarification: the latest subscription based Outlook works without an App PW. As does the free Web-based version.

The whole idea of invalidating older, more secure versions of purchased Outlooks, which require an app password,  was to force us to buy the latest versions of Outlook OR to use the less secure free web based versions or buy a MS 365 subscription. So, for everyone who bought Outlook 2018 or 2019, at some point, you'll have to fork over more money to buy the latest Outlook, use the free web based or buy a 365 subscription. I don't think there are many purchase one time only applications. It wouldn't surprise me if we soon will have to buy subscriptions to operating systems. So, instead of buying Windows 12, say, we'll buy annual subscriptions over and over and over or not be able to use our desktop computers, unless we pay an annual subscription fee. I might be wrong.

How about the Android version for mobile phones?

I assume you're asking about Outlook.  I doubt it.  Probably need to use Gmail as most probably do.  Apple users typically use Mail on their devices.

I use Mail on my iPhone. But the Outlook 2013 I bought 11 years ago will no longer accept @rogers.com as it requires an app password. So, if I wanted and needed the security and other features that pertain only to purchased Outlook email apps, I'd have to buy Outlook 2023 or Outlook 2024. Since I don't need that level of security, I'm ok with with the free web version of Outlook or the 365 version, for which I pay <3$/month. So, my Outlook 2013 is useless for @rogers.com email, but I can use it for my WebNetworks email. For now. But, I wouldn't be surprised if several years down the road, MS and Rogers will make today's versions of Outlook invalid, forcing usto buy a new "improved" version or force us to purchase "a convenient" subscription service to access our email etc. etc., blah blah blah.

I've been around

My solution: WinMailPassRec.exe from NirSoft.net

Only posting this because I spent two frustrating days trying to get my parents' Rogers Yahoo email account set up on their new laptop. (The Outlook they use is from a purchased copy of Home and Business Office 2021.) Ended up downloading a password recovery tool program from NirSoft.net called WinMailPassRec onto their old computer, ran it once and it displayed a popup window with all the settings including the old app password. Can't vouch for the safety of the program though the website seems to have a good reputation. Only ran it on the old dying computer after I had copied over all the documents to the new laptop so if there was a virus it wouldn't transfer to the new laptop. Not a techie so if you know someone who knows computers, maybe check with them before using. Hope this helps.

I plan to stick around

Nirsoft has a good reputation for small, reliable and useful applications that many people find incredibly useful.  I wouldn't be concerned.  Wish I'd known about WinMailPassRec before adopting a different, and more expensive, solution.

Glad to see you were able to copy over the App PW.  I mentioned this in point 6 of the following summary post:

https://communityforums.rogers.com/t5/Internet/Can-t-create-App-password/m-p/524346/highlight/true#M...

It isn't necessary to use software to do this, rather some research on the web typically will provide instructions for a particular client/computer/OS, etc:

There are other workarounds discussed in the linked post, but many people have switched to something like Gmail which is provider agnostic and can even be set up to import emails from Rogers/Yahoo!

This is a genius Idea

Another suggestion which is my approach is to document every password in some kind of secure log, this includes email passwords,  so if you have an app password, write it down somewhere safe, so if u ever ferget it, you dont have to go thru this fiasco
