IPv6 Prefix on Fiber

Is there a way to get a larger prefix than /64 on IPv6 over fiber? I'm trying to figure out if it's something on my end or if it is even supported?

There are many posts all over where other people make reference to using a /56 prefix without issue. Is this something that is only partly implemented and it depends on where you are?

Just want to confirm, is your Internet service DOCSIS or FTTH/XGS-PON?

I'm also wondering what Rogers has planned and why the Gateway needs this extra address space.  Public Wi-Fi hotspot?

I don't know if it's related, but Rogers did some work here a couple of weeks ago, where they had a planned outage.  There were 4 Rogers trucks here and there was some work done in the condo utility room.

I just rebooted my modem and still see only a /64.  😞

Which model of the Rogers Gateway are you using?

Mine is the XB8 and following is picture of the PD

I have a Technicolor CGM4140COM.  There was no visible picture.

Just checked and still only /64 prefix on FTTH here when using opnsense DHCPv6 on WAN with /56 prefix hint.

Have you configured your OpenSense  in SLAAC mode not a DHCPv6  and when you do so make sure to reboot your Router.

@roytoy

Sorry but I made a mistake in my previous response to your post.

Can you confirm your OpenSense Configuration if it mimics the following:

Use IPv4 connectivity as parent interface: yes
Request only a IPv6 prefix: no
    DHCPv6 Prefix Delegation Size: 56
    Send IPv6 prefix hint: yes

In LAN Interface menu:

IPv6 Configuration Type: track interface
    IPv6 Interface: WAN
    IPv6 Prefix ID: 0

I've been here awhile

I've tried that combination of settings in my OPNSense setup on Rogers FTTH in New Brunswick at least - can see in the packet capture that we have a prefix length in the DHCPv6 solicit packet that is /56 - but in the advertise response the prefix length is still only /64

Re: IPv6 Prefix on Fiber

As stated, DHCPv6 with a /56 prefix hint on WAN interface only gets a /64. Use IPv4 connectivity is not relevant on Rogers as they provide the IPv6 natively.

The above link is one I posted from a different account  …. Rogers, your technical prow-less is unfathomable …👎

On Coax, I have. /60 today.

That makes no sense … are you sure it’s a /60 and not a /64 or a /56 ?

I was actually surprised that Rogers requested a /56 PD on my gateway.  If they will only be enabling one or two additional subnets, requesting a /60 makes perfect sense, and still allows for additional expansion.

To be honest, I still would like to know why they are requesting anything other that a /64.  Tagging @CommunityHelps for an explanation.  Thanks!

Re: IPv6 Prefix on Fiber

There are 16 /64 subnets in a /60 IPv6 network

There are 256/64 subnets in a /56 IPv6 network

Since 2013 Rogers have been providing /56 to those that needed/wanted that   ... so you're say that a architectural change now makes sense? I'm still getting a /56  ... how does providing a mix make sense from a technical perspective???

BUT the issue STILL remains as to why FTTH is stuck with only a /64 ???

I run pfSense for my firewall/router.  I can select any size from /64 to /56.

A blast from the past and a x Rogers techie I had a lot of respect for:

It now looks like Rogers is allowing a mix of /PD's and I am wondering how does Rogers determine who gets what? Depending on your Gateway Model assigned to your account capabilities My speculation is that its selectable ... i.e. if you do not request a PD you might get a /60 but if do request a /56 THROUGH the CLIENT Prefix Hint request - that's what you will get ...

Why is this a secret? And Why is the Rogers Network not consistent <> FTTH still does not get a PD - shame shame Shame

I've been running pfSense for my firewall/router for over 8 years.  Initially, Rogers provided only a single /64.  However, after they started providing a /56, I was able to select the prefix size I wanted.  As for who gets what, after the initial assignment, your DUID is used to identify what prefix you had been assigned.
