Bad Ping When Gaming

bradleywelsh
I've been here awhile

Hi there,

I recently switched to Rogers ignite about 2 months ago (1.5GB) and I've had nothing but good things to say about the internet speeds. My one problem has been regarding my ping when gaming. I normally connect my console to the Wifi Pods and have been noticing spiking ping regardless of my fast internet speeds. I've also tried connecting to my modem, same problem. Does anybody have any suggestions? I've tried resetting everything, buying a better ethernet cable, using different DNS servers on my console but nothings sticking. Any help would be greatly appreciated because I've been very happy with the product so far but this problem really hinders my online gaming experience.

Hello @bradleywelsh!

I am sorry to hear that you're experiencing latency while gaming. I know lag can be absolutely devastating to a gaming session.

Is this impacting all games that you play or just a specific game? Is everyone in your household experiencing similar latency issues or is it isolated to one device?

If you're connecting to your WiFi pods while gaming, that will introduce some additional latency that cannot be mitigated against. For the best possible gaming experience, you should connect directly to your gateway with an Ethernet cable.

Regards,

RogersCorey

Hi Corey,

Yes everybody in the household has dealt with latency issues. And yes as mentioned in my original post I have connected to the Gateway modem and still deal with the same problem

Re: Bad Ping When Gaming

Have you tried running a trace route to see if the issue is actually with your Rogers connection, a node on the way to the server you are connecting to, or the service provider the server host is using? Cogent specifically, is a cheaper ISP for gaming companies that usually has very poor performance. Sometimes a VPN or Smart DNS can help avoid a problem location. A trace route to the gaming server should tell you a lot or to XBOX Live, if you are using that platform.
