Getting charged for a “free” tablet

I’ve been getting charged for a “free” tablet I received from Rogers when I signed my last 2yr old contract. For the 1st 2 years there were no charges, then after 2 years they added a $10 monthly charge for tablet financing. What amazes me is they can send me a monthly text to remind me to pay my $300/mnth bill but cannot text/email or phone me to say “by the way we’re going to start ripping you off for $10 per month until you realize it.” This “free” tablet ended up costing me $100. The customer service rep even admitted he doesn’t look at his bills. Well, jokes on me I guess. They re not budging on giving me my money back or crediting me. I’ve been a Rogers customer for many years and that is going to change. Never, ever accept any “free” products from Rogers, it’s just a greasy scam to take your money. Not to mention that the $150 tablet is a piece of junk and didn’t work from day 1.

Just my personal opinion, I would NEVER sign up for a free tablet, even if they pressured me into it.  I used to work for a major company a decade ago and I know the ins and outs, I also know how some agents lie to make a quick commission, they just want to end the call as quickly as possible. I do not trust these pitches, especially if I had no intention of wanting a tablet.

Congrats on your first post with us! 👌 We most definitely appreciate your loyalty and tenure with us. As a consumer myself, I can completely understand how you're feeling while receiving an unexpected bill amount. 

 

I know firsthand how imperative it is to ensure you receive the service and product you are promised. It sounds like you received a promotion for a free tablet for 24 months and after the monthly service fee promotion expired, you proceeded to get charged for the $10 monthly service fee. We do send out notifications directly on your bill, 3 months prior to your promotional offer expiring to ensure we give you a heads up on what to expect thereafter. 

 

With that said, going forward, in the event that you receive any equipment that is not functioning, or if you do notice a change in your monthly billing amount, definitely get in touch with us as soon as possible so we can review your bill with you to see what may have changed, and we'd be more than happy to have a gander for you.

So do I get my money back that I was charged for the financing fee for a “free” tablet? This is obviously a greasy money grab. So disgusted in Rogers. Especially in these times where the cost of living has gone through the roof. It would be pretty easy for Rogers to make this right, if they wanted to.

i do not think they finance beyond the 2 years, you are probsably paying a monthly service fee for some kind of line / sim card for this tablet, if u dont want to pay it simply call them and cancel the line and stop paying for it. can't get any easier than this.

Yeah, thanks Tips. I don’t care if it’s called a “service fee” or a “finance fee” the point is they’re charging me for something I was told was free. 2 years later I start getting charged for it. And it’s stated on the bill as a financing fee. It’s greasy any way you look at it.

sounds like service was free for 2 years, after you cancel or you start paying simple as that, like all the subscription services did you expect anything different? shouldn't give bad reviews due to your own fault. all these corporations are out to rip the consumer off so do your due diligence,

Nothing is truly ever free in this world, there is always a catch.

If people keep signing up for things like "free" this,  "free" that, free anything, you will always have fine print attached to it, and believe me, companies never give anything for free, they will always make up the money some how weather its monthly fees or lock you in to a term, etc.

 

My advice, if u want a nice tablet, go out to the store and buy it outright, you wont have any strings attached to it. if you want a mobile plan for your tablet to be able to use it anywhere, go sign up for a BYOD mobile tablet only plan month to month, so u can cancel it at any time, no contract or term or financing.

 

Once you learn how to do this, you will have less problems in life with mobile carriers.

Have this same issue. can i just call to cancel? do i need to return the tablet? I already gave it to my nephew lol.

I've been around

I'm dealing with this nonsense right now. I tried cancelling the sim cards associated with the tablet many times and was told it didn't need to be done/couldn't be done. I argued many times and tried returning the tablets the first month. Now that I'm leaving, I owed nearly $50 for a cheap tablet that was "free" if I transferred to Rogers. Nothing about 24 months financing

I didn’t ask for a free tablet nor was I looking for one. It was offered to me for free. I was ensured there were no additional charges but it turns out there were charges that I had to look for on page 12 of my 18 page bill. Thanks for your valuable advice.

I did not subscribe to anything. I was blatantly lied to and told there would be no charges. THAT is what I expected - no charges. I did my due diligence, but I was lied to. If you don’t understand my situation, please refrain from commenting.

It’s a greasy money grab by Rogers that they won’t admit to and will not reimburse you for. Even the customer service agent I spoke to on the phone was admittedly embarrassed by the fact I had been getting charged for this tablet but unfortunately Rogers won’t do anything to correct this. I’ve been with Rogers for many years. This will change as soon as my contract is up.

I also just discovered that I am being charged for the two free tablets that were sent to me completely un requested and when I inquired about them, I was told they were free. What an idiot I am.

Thank you for posting about your situation to the Rogers Community! I understand your confusion when you started being billed for the tablet monthly fee after the promotional 2 year period. 

 

Were you able to get in touch with our Customer Relations team to request the cancellation of your tablet lines, since you posted?

 

If you have not yet done so, I'd recommend you to contact the cancellations team to terminate the service on your tablet lines. To reach them, you can follow these steps:
• Dial 1-888-764-3771.
• Confirm account information by pressing 1
• Select 4 for account changes.
• Select 5 to cancel a service.

Your actually not being "charged" for the "free" tablet, your being charged a monthly service fee, that the tablet is using.

 

I hate to say this but not just rogers but other companies are also guilty of this, using deceitful tactics to entice people to sign up for things they do not need.

 

I have a hard time understanding things when Rogers calls me to offer me something, because in the past I have said "yes" but realized It was a mistake.

 

To overcome this, now any time I am being offered something even if it is not from Rogers, but any other company in the world, I ask AS MANY questions as possible, I ask for the fine print, the small details, I ask for documentation, I ask about cancellation, monthly fees, etc, sometimes the monthly fee is credited back so they sometimes say no monthly fee, blabla but in reality I learned to ask "what is the monthly fee BEFORE CREDITRS AND DISCOUNTS",  "WHAT DISCOUNTS AND CREDITS AND WHEN DO THEY EXPRIE"

 

These people most likely get paid commissions when they activate products to you, so make them "work hard" for their commission or sale. make them EARN it by asking every question possible, don't accept "i dont know" as an answer

 

So ever since I have been very upfront of what I am possibly signing up for and ask so many questions, I have noticed I have NEVER got suckered into signing up for something I did not want, and when I did find a mistake for something I was told, I had ALL the details documented including interaction dates, times, names of employees, etc, to back up my claims.

 

I noticed a lot of people fail to do these things and will get suckered, so do your part and do your homework and research first.

Pauly, you are failing to understand a very simple concept. Rogers is telling customers that there is NO charge or NO service fees for said tablet. They are saying it is FREE when you sign a 2 year contract. They are blatantly lying and essentially stealing from loyal customers. There are many people that are old or do not speak very good English that they are taking advantage of. STOP defending Rogers!!!! Do you think this is ok?

I'm not defending them, can you share a snippet of what the charges are?  Did you need the free tablet?  if not it's also like signing up for door to door, only accept something if you agree to it, I'm not defending them but if they ARE charging you then you should explain what the charges are. if they are telling you your not getting charged then someone is lying, and I suspect its them

someone saying they are getting "charged" but how are we to know if you are indeed getting charged? we cant see your bills, we are only going by what you are saying vs what rogers is saying.

Step 1. Use rogers chat to sign up for free tablet.

Step 2. Lay out the ground rules: Ask for every detail and for all hidden fees

Step 3. Save date of chat and save transcript
Any thing documented on rogers chat is as good as a business contract.

Step 4. If anything isnt followed through as discussed on chat you can dispute it with your transcript as proof. You can take all the way to the top.

Ive done this through all my plans and promos. This way even if an agent lie, you can fight it as its their fault for lying but they still must follow through
