Speed test results on desktop don't match results via HomeConnect app

Hello,

yesterday I accepted an online offer and my internet was boosted from Ignite 500/30 to 1.5G/50. I ran a few tests on my desktop via a couple of popular internet speed testing tests, yet the speeds don't match the ones via the HomeConnect app. What is ironic (for lack of a better word) is that when I was on the 500/30 plan my download speeds, in particular, were better than they are now. I would get over 900 Mbps down and 32 up (hardwired/Ethernet). Now I sometimes I barely get 800, but the upload is fine at 53. On the contrary, via the HomeConnect app, running tests give me upload speeds at well above 1.5 Gbps, as high as 1.9Gbps down and 54,3 Mbps up.

I also disconnected Ethernet, ran tests on my desktop with Wireless connected, yet the results are the same, sometimes worse (i.e. barely 600 down and 52 up).

Now someone will probably tell me to check my network card/controller to see if it is capable of handling over 1 Gig. The ones I have are the Killer E2600 internet chip and Killer AX1650 Wifi card, and I quote: “The E2600 supports 1Gbps cable internet and the AX1650 supports the latest gen internet standard 802.11AX (Wi-Fi 6) of up to 2.4Gbps”... so yes, via Ethernet connection I won't get over 1 Gbps (apparently), but I should be able to get anything higher than 1 Gig via the AX1650 which supports up to 2.4 Gigs...

 

I appreciate any help, please. Should I contact Rogers to run tests on my line? Is it possible that I won't get full speeds before 24 hours (as an agent hinted) since I was upgraded last night?

I'm guessing that the desktop is therefor limited to 1 Gbps, which is pretty typical.  This usually gives a result of 940 Mbps due to overhead.  The phone was probably limited to the 360 by WiFi.  You are therefore getting more than 1 Gbps. Not sure if you have another device you can add to the mix, but that might take you to a higher number overall.

1. I believe it is possible to edit your post for up to about 2 hours.  Should be no need for a new post.

2. Since your Home Connect app shows 1.9 (same as I get), then I don't think further testing by Rogers will be much help since they'll probably say there's nothing wrong.  

3. I therefore suspect something limiting your equipment.  You could run a test on more than one device at the same time and add up the results - for example 600 on a tablet, 600 on a phone, 700 on a computer, which would "prove" that the Gateway is getting 1.9.  After running such a test and if you get around 1.5+Gbps, then you'll need to troubleshoot your various devices and check the specs more closely.  Are you connected to port 4?

 

I get 1.9 down and 178 up on my Mac Mini M2 E10 on Speedtest.net just now.  The 178 up is recent (upgrade in my neighbourhood near Yonge & Lawrence?) as I used to get 55 up on my 1.5/50 plan.

Honestly, I wasn't able to edit my post.... anyhow yes, I plugged into port 4 early this morning, but still not getting the results via Speedtest, etc. I will take a look at the the posts you suggested, thanks

I just tried testing again with my iPhone SE 2020 and my Mac Mini M2 E10 simultaneously.  

 

I got 1550 down on my computer and 350 down on the phone, for 1900 down total.

I got 90 up on my computer and 100 up on the phone for 190 up total.

 

Have you tried running the test on a couple (or 3) devices simultaneously?  Have the devices all set to go on the speedtest website(s) and then click on them so they all start the test within a second or so.

I'm thinking of upgrading my network card to something that gives me more than 1 Gbps on Ethernet.

@asturias7 : You may wish to save your money. It's highly unlikely you'd notice any difference, except for test sites.

I still want to swap the Ethernet controller I have now capped at 1000Mbps for a 2.5Gbps controller/network card.

Suite yourself but I agree with @57 .  Unless you perform massive downloads, it's unlikely that you will notice much if any difference in the speed or responsiveness of your Internet connection.
