Only receiving 1/3 of 1.5 Gbps Speeds

BlueJays16
I plan to stick around

Just upgraded to 1.5 Gbps.  Use to be on 1.0 Gbps tier.  Never was able to reach more than 700 even in off peak time.  Speed tests are usually around 500 or so.

When I had 1Gbps I had an Asus AC-86U router which was replaced by an Asus GT-AX6000 router.  Speeds were still the same either hardwired via Router or to modem directly.   This was on the XB6 modem.  The XB7 modem was replaced when I got the new Internet tier but still experiencing the same issue.  Hardwired to XB7 and through the router.

My PC has an Intel I225-V (2.5Gbe) card.  Hardwired to the modem with the tech onsite and only got 500 down 55 up.  He replaced the connectors outside and said it should ramp up in a couple of days.  But I was already getting those sub par speeds when I was on 1Gbps package and XB6 modem.  Now that I'm on 1.5 Gbps tier I expect to see around 1200 down at least directly connected to my PC via the 2.5Gbe port on the XB7.

What are my next steps here to get some improvements in my speeds.

Testing Setup:

- XB7 2.5Gbe to PC Intel I225-V 2.5Gbe LAN directly (~500 down, 50up)

- XB7 2.5Gbe to Asus GT-AX6000 2.5Gbe WAN and LAN 2.5 Gbe to PC 2.5 Gbe (~500 down, 50up)

End goal setup:

- XB7 2.5Gbe to 2.5Gbe WAN on Asus GT-AX6000

- Asus GT-AX6000 2.5Gbe LAN to QNAP QSW-2104-2T (4 port 2.5Gbe and 2 port 10Gbe) switch

- QNAP switch 2.5 Gbe to PC 2.5 Gbe Intel I225-V LAN card and other associated 2.5 Gbe items

FYI, my issues have finally been resolved.  They ran a new line to my house.  There was some noise on the line coming to my house.   You can see I'm getting 1500+ on my speedtest on Asus Merlin that is ran every 3 hours.

@BlueJays16 are you aware of the problems with the Intel I225-V ethernet controllers?  If not, have a look at the following search:

https://www.google.com/search?q=intel+i225-v+problems&gbv=1&sei=eKr2Y7Bewqmq2w-3l4n4Cg

From what I remember reading long ago, Intel mucked up the intergap or interframe spacing for the 225, and as a result the 225 controller wouldn't interface properly on a network that had a controller manufactured by any othe company.  The end result were performance issues with the 225 controller.

Here's an Intel page to update the Non-Volatile memory of the controller:

https://www.intel.ca/content/www/ca/en/support/articles/000057261/ethernet-products/gigabit-ethernet...

Here'a an interesting Reddit page which discusses the issue:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ASUS/comments/kppyoi/psa_asus_motherboards_with_intel_i225v_25gb_nic/

Now, having said all of that, its possible that you might have signal level issues with your external cable which is limiting the performance of any modem that you might have installed.

is the Intel I218-V and Intel I211 effected?   These are the OEM 1Gbps LAN connections that I use to use.  I bought the Intel I225-V in preparation for 1.5 Tier.   And I was still averaging ~500 during that time as well.

The Asus Router have Merlin installed and I run SpdMerlin that does a speedtest from the router itself and again.  Approx ~500.  I take the router speed as a reference as well.

How would I get a signal performance test externally?

Re: Only receiving 1/3 of 1.5 Gbps Speeds

As far as I know, its only the 225 that is affected.  If you were not seeing 940 Mb/s with your previous modem, then there's another problem on the go.  Just out of curiosity, when you were only seeing 500 Mb/s previously, did tech support or the field tech advise you to change modems and upgrade to the 1.5 Gb/s plan, promising that all would be well?  Just wondering.....

Fwiw, there are numerous customers (far too many) complaining about slow data rates after upgrading to the 1.5 Gb/s plan.  Something in the account creation or modem configuration process is broken, plain and simple.  My personal opinion is that the modems are not being configured for their correct 1.5 Gb/s data rates.  The cause of that ranges from an error in converting tech support's indicated setting into the correct configuration data, or, a problem with the modem's interpretation of the configuration file.  I have seen a post from someone in your position where the tech support rep did something, whatever that something happened to be, and voila, problem solved.  Only problem is that the customer in question didn't know what that something happened to be.  Very unfortunate as that little tidbit of knowledge would help a number of other customers who have ended up in the same boat.

So, at this point in time my advice is to send a message to the moderators requesting their assistance.  To to that, when you're logged into the forum, follow this link @CommunityHelps.  On the right side of they're linked page is a link to Send a Message.  Follow that link to the message composition page.  The address will fill in automatically.  Fill in the subject and details, including your account number and modem MAC address if you can find it in the modem's user interface.  It should be easy to find.  Ask @RogersTony or @RogersMoin to check the account configuration and configuration for your modem to see if the data rate is set correctly.  Maybe it takes a change to some incorrect setting, followed by a change to the correct setting to get the correct data to the modem.  Don't know, just a stab in the dark at this point.

Let them know that you're a recent upgrade to the 1.5 Gb/s plan and like many others, you're seeing slow data rates.

Also ask them to check the modem signal levels to see if there's a problem.

Was your modem install a self install, or was it installed by a tech?

One thing that you can do, if and when you have time, is post the signal levels in this thread.  Within the modem's UI, you'll see three data tables, downstream, upstream and codewords.  To copy those tables, one at a time, park your curser just before the first character in the table.   Hold down the shift key and scroll down and to the right, to just after the last character in the bottom right hand table element.  Release the shift key and use Ctrl c to copy the data.   Then in a post, use Ctrl V to paste in the data table.  Do that for all three tables.  That will be useful to see if there is a signal level issue on the go.

Hopefully by checking the account and modem configuration, and signal levels, something obvious will come up.

What modem did you have previously?  Here's Rogers current modem lineup:

https://www.rogers.com/support/internet/setup-install

To run a speedtest I personally wouldn't rely on SpdMerlin.  You should use www.speedtest.net and when that comes up, don't rely on the suggested speedtest server.  Select Change Server and when that comes up, type in Rogers.  You don't have to hit the enter key.  When you type in Rogers, the list will automatically change to show the Rogers speedtest servers.  Select the nearest server to your home.  Select the Rogers server as a primary server, then possibly a Rogers Wireless server as a secondary server.  When you see the list you will see both Rogers, and Rogers Wireless servers listed.  My primary choice is a Rogers server.  It all depends on which one is closest to your home.  If in doubt, test with both Rogers and Rogers Wireless servers to see if there happens to be any difference.  With the Intel I218-V and Intel I211, you should see a maximum of 940 Mb/s as a download rate, and 50+ Mb/s assuming that you're on a 1.5 Gb/s down, 50 Mb/s up internet plan.

If you have any of the following running:  Traditional QoS, Adaptive QoS, Bandwidth Monitor, Bandwidth limiter, Traffic Monitor, Traffic Analyzer, AIProtection running, disable them, reboot the router and then rerun the speedtest.  With all of those functions disabled, if you're running Merlin's Asuswrt, which I believe you are (?), you should see the following under:  Tools .... Sysinfo ....HW acceleration    Runner: Enabled - Flow Cache: Enabled

With Runner and Flow Cache enabled, you should see full data rates thru the router.  The usual problem with Asus routers is that those functions will route the data thru the processor, instead of  taking a fast track from the WAN Port to the output port.  That will kill the HW Acceleration, dropping the speeds thru the router, without warning.  So, basically disable the extraneous functions, reboot the router.  That router reboot will hopefully re-enable the HW Acceleration.  You might have to take a tour thru all of the pages, disabling any function that you know you're not using, followed by a reboot.  When in doubt, tour thru all of the pages again, disabling everything except the firewall and wifi.  Reboot and retest.

Your router has 2.5 Gb/s WAN and LAN ports, but, that Intel 225 might prove to be a problem.  You can always test with the Intel I218-V and Intel I211 to see that you can reach 940 Mb/s.  From there, changing to the 225 should show if its still a problem after you have updated the Non Volatile Ram.

Edit:  bottom portion of post rewritten after looking at the Asus GT-AX6000 specs.  Dual 2.5 Gb/s port ... very nice.

I plan to stick around

I had the Ignite Wifi Gen 1 (guessing XB6 modem?)

as for the sub par speeds, I did talk to support in the past and they come out and do a line test and it would go up a bit to 800 temporarily when they were on site and then it would drop back down.  I honestly just gave up.  Now that I've upgraded to 1.5, I would have imagined I would get at least 800 sustainable considering I would have a better modem.   That's my thought process, they don't technically offer the 1.0Gbps plan anymore its 1.5 now.  At least for my area.

attached are the signal levels.

@BlueJays16 most of your signal data is within limits.  There is a definite problem in the channel 8 to 11 downstream frequency range.  Channels 9 and 10 are messed up for all of the signal data and channels 8 and 11 are indicating a high number of Correctable and Uncorrectable Codewords, so, something is wrong within that particular frequency band.  The upstream channels are above the usual 36 to 40 dBmV range, but, their within limits and they shouldn't cause any issues.

Were you running multiple services prior to switching over to the Ignite system?  If so, you would have had a signal amplifier or splitter installed where the inbound external Rogers cable connects to the house cable system.  With the change to the XB6 or XB7 modem, any splitter or amplifiers should have been removed, and any of the other house cables should have been disconnected and moved out of the way.  Its possible that you might have been left with a splitter in the system if the installation tech felt that the modem's signal levels were too high.  A signal attenuator would have been a better choice, but, Rogers techs uses splitters for some reason.  If a splitter is still in place, then the unused output ports should have a 75 ohm terminator covering them to prevent any signal reflection within the splitter.  The terminators look like this:

https://www.homedepot.ca/product/ideal-f-twist-on-terminator/1001046721

Upstairs, at the modem's location, there should only be a single RG6 cable running from the wallport to the modem.  There should not be any splitters in that cable path.

You indicated that you had used or tested previously with an Intel I218-V and Intel I211.  Are those on LAN cards which you can install and test with, or on another pc that is no longer in use?  Just wondering how easy, if at all, it might be to switch back to those adapters for test purposes?

One question that I have to ask is whether or not you've seen your present pc run anything over 1 Gb/s at another location?  It would help to know that yes indeed, this pc can do more than 1 Gb/s, in which case its over to you Rogers .....

What happens if you run the modem in its default Gateway mode instead of Bridge mode?  Do the speeds improve at all, or are they the same.  For troubleshooting purposes, Rogers tech support will ask you to run the modem in Gateway mode, and connect to the modem directly.  That puts the performance issue squarely on Rogers if your pc can definitely run somewhere above 1 Gb/s.  Have you done any testing with the modem running in Gateway mode?

How does the modem connect to the router?  Is that via short Cat 6 cable for example, or are you using house ethernet cabling with the modem in one location and the router in another location?

Fwiw, the RT-AC86U, with AiProtection disabled and running IPV4 will do at least 900 Mb/s.

Are you running IPV4 and IPV6 thru the router?  IPV6 should be faster, buuuut, I wouldn't necessarily count on it.  Last time I looked the Rogers speedtest sites would run thru IPV6 addresses initially, but, for test purposes, they would switch back to IPV4 addressing for the actual test.  Its been a long while since I looked this, and I'd expect by now that Rogers would have full IPV6 test servers running.  But, I'm not going to assume thats the case.

I've always been in the Ignite system, we removed the smart home and the VoIP phone package and just retained Ignite TV and Ignite Internet.   I've always always had the Ignite XB6 or gen1 modem since I've moved in and procured the service.   There's no splitter/filter from the inside of the house as its connected directly from the outside of the house; unless there's a filter on the exterior panel as it comes inside the house.

DHCP is performed on a Raspberry Pi for Pi-Hole that does issue IPV4 ad IPV6 addresses.  I can disable IPV6 addresses and try as well.

So I did do some testing earlier today.  As the Intel I225-V3 (iocrest) is a PCI-E card that I installed separately.   The onboard LAN are the Intel I218-V and Intel I211.  I plugged into XB7 directly and was obtaining 700-800 for a bit.  Then it dropped to ~550 afterwards.   For the Intel I225-V3 putting in 1Gbps mode also yielded similar results.  If I placed the Intel I225-V3 on 2.5Gbps mode it'll ramp up to 1000 and then significantly dropped there after,  I believe this is related to the Intel issue that you have raised.  I'm going to search for another PCI-E 2.5Gbe (any recommendations is appreciated) to replace or test it with.

I also bypassed the Qnap QSW-2104-2T just in case its the switch is causing issue, but yield same results.

For the Asus GT-AX6000, QoS is not in use and I have disabled, traffic monitor and AiProtect.   Performed a speedtest using the built-in Merlin spdmerlin addon.  Was actually able to pull 1359.66/54.34.  Testing 20 minutes later it dropped in half consistently at 700/54.  I've also re-enabled it to see if performance dropped in any way and it was at 700/54 area.  Leaving it currently off for now until I can sustain speeds and see if I want AiProtection or Skynet (Merlin-Addon) on.

Now with peak time 6PM EST.  I'm getting 500/54

I also have not tried to test in Gateway mode yet; I will try to test gateway mode when I get a new 2.5Gbe PCIe card.

so i think I have two issues.   1 is the network card, which is the I225-V3 that I wouldn't have known and will have to be replaced. That's a bummer.  and 2.  I truly believe that my line is not stable enough to provide consistent bandwidth.

by the way thank you for all the help thus far!

Re: Only receiving 1/3 of 1.5 Gbps Speeds

H'mmmm.  I don't feel like I've been much of a help so far 😞  I do agree with disabling IPV6 for test purposes.  Rogers does have IVP6 issues at the CMTS from time to time which are hard to recognize and harder to gain someone's attention to the problem.

Are you running Merlin's Asuswrt, and if so, have you confirmed that the Hardware Acceleration is running, specifically that the following shows up:  Tools .... Sysinfo ....HW acceleration    Runner: Enabled - Flow Cache: Enabled

Have you looked at updating the Non Volatile Memory of the 225 adapter to see if it improves the performance of the adapter?  Maybe you don't have to buy a new one if Intel has managed to fix the problem.

I suspect that you're correct about the external cable system.  That anomaly in channels 8 to 11 indicate that something is amiss, but, it might not affect your modem, depending on whether or not the modem is actually using any of those channels.  All it would take is for a tech to look up the data for your cable run from the neighbourhoood node to see if that issue with those channels is common to number of modems up or down the line.  From there, it would take a Senior Tech (real Rogers tech) or a Maintenance Crew to determine what the issue is.  And then there's always the possibility that you're on a heavily loaded neighbourhood node or CMTS.  That itself would explain the slower data rates at this time of the day (6 pm on a Friday).

How does the modem connect to the router, via short ethernet cable, or via house Cat-5e or Cat-6 cabling where the modem and router are not co-located?  If they are co-located, they should not be side by side.  I'd put at least 8 to 10 feet distance between the two, so that the modem isn't subject to any EMI from the router's wifi.  It shouldn't be, but, I'd still separate the two devices.

Are you using any type of power bar?  If so, can you disconnect the power bar completely from the wall socket and from the equipment and run the equipment using multi-head extension cords if necessary.  Power bars will last a long time, but when the metal oxide varistor fails, it can create enough RF noise to kill cable and ethernet signals between connected computer equipment.  The varistor provides over-voltage protection against high voltage spikes, so that the connected equipment is protected against lightning strikes and line overvoltage situations.

I've confirmed the following forgot to note in last reply.  Tools .... Sysinfo ....HW acceleration    Runner: Enabled - Flow Cache: Enabled

I've emailed the manufacturer Iocrest in regards to a potential firmware update, but it is a V3 model.  I'll need to do some research if the V3 model is affected, but I suspect it is and I rather try to get another 2.5Gbe PCIe card to rule it out.   I only see on-board NVM firmware updates from Asus.   But I'll search later, I'll be away this weekend and I can spend some time doing some research remotely.

The modem, router, PC and switch is essentially all next to each other.  I can't move the items too far away, but I can try to see if the EMI is an issue.

I'll see if I can open a ticket with Rogers to review the signal and determine if it is an issue.

and you'd be surprised how much you've helped.  I wouldn't even know where to start and Rogers support might be going in a loop.  So this way at least I have an action plan.

Re: Only receiving 1/3 of 1.5 Gbps Speeds

Going back to that earlier reading list, the 225V is affected, but the 225V3 should be ok.  Still, its worth doing a little research to back that up.  The comment that someone made is that it took Intel three tries to get it right.

Check the prior reading list as it looks like the NVM update came straight from Intel.  There is an Intel application that you can load to scan for system updates for any Intel based components.  That comes from Intel:

https://www.intel.ca/content/www/ca/en/support/detect.html

I don't know if it will pick up on the NVM update for the card, but, it might be worth checking out.

I'm assuming that you're in a house and that you can see the green Rogers pedestal from your front door.  Have you asked your immediate neighbours if they're also experiencing slow data rates.  By immediate, the Local Tap, which is housed within that pedestal will connect you and probably the next two houses to your left and right, to the main cable run from the neighbourhood node.

I plan to stick around

Just upgraded to 1.5 Gbps.  Used to be on 1.0 Gbps and would see speeds occasionally over 900 Mbps, usually in the 800's.

My connections are hardwired with Cat-6.

The issue is with my three Dell notebooks. My notebooks now are only getting just over 500 Mbps, usually in the 400's.

Had a Rogers tech come out and tested everything. He used what he called an expensive tester from the modem manufacturer which he connected to my modem and read the results on his cell phone. He says it shows 2 Gbps down and 62 Mbps up.

We  connected my three Dell notebooks directly to the modem and saw results in the 200 - 400ish range. Upload shows about 50 Mbps.

Then tech tried it with his tester modem and we received similar speed results.

I do not know if my computers were also getting these lower speeds when I was on the 1.0 Gbps service, or if this has happened as a result of upgrading.

Any troubleshooting suggestions?

Side notes:

I am running the modem in bridge mode.
Rogers tech ran a new temporary line from the street to my house.
My network uses eero mesh routers
My Pixel 6 Pro gets about 550/50 off the eero’s
The ethernet card in this Dell that I am typing on is a Intel Ethernet Connection I219-LM

I did not mean to hijack @BlueJays16's thread, I thought I was starting a new one. I can't seem to move this or delete it, so hopefully a mod can help me out.

It looks like one of the Moderators moved your post to an existing thread.

I'm not sure why some people are seeing slower speeds after upgrading from Ignite 1 Gigabit to the 1.5 Gigabit service.  I have measured transfer rates in excess of 1.8 Gb/s and upload speeds of just over 53 Mb/s.

Also, which eero model do you currently have?  The eero Pro 6E has a 2.5 GigE port that you can use to connect to an XB7 or XB8 gateway at high speed.  However, all of the other eero models only have Gigabit Ethernet connectivity so with your Ignite Gateway in Bridge Mode, the total throughput with those will top out at 940 Mb/s.

Re: Only receiving 1/3 of 1.5 Gbps Speeds

Greetings everyone!

Something to keep in mind about our speeds is that anything above 1 Gigabit is based on aggregate speeds. When testing your speeds, you need to test on multiple connected devices and add them together. For instance, if @kwGuy is getting 500mbps on 3 simultaneously connected notebooks, then he is getting his full speeds when you add all 3 together.

Assuming optimal network, equipment and customer device conditions. For Ignite Internet Gigabit or above, multiple Ethernet/wired and wireless connections are required to reach total maximum download speeds and/or symmetrical upload speeds where available.

For Ignite Internet 2.5 Gigabit and Ignite Internet 8 Gigabit, the maximum download or upload speed through the Ignite WiFi Gateway modem is 2.35 Gbps + 0.15 Gbps transmission overhead. For Ignite Internet 8 Gigabit, at least one direct wired connection to the Ethernet Switch or Optical Network Terminal provided is required to reach total maximum speeds and Ignite WiFi Hub features including Advanced Security are available only to devices connected to the Ignite WiFi Gateway modem. See Acceptable Use Policy at rogers.com/terms.

RogersCorey

Thanks for your comments and insight on this.

I am using the eero 6+ and I realize it is a gigabit system, however the purpose of my post is looking for answers as to try and figure out why my test speeds have gone down.

HI RogersCorey,

Here are some answers to your comments.

When the Rogers tech was here testing with my notebooks, we were ran each notebook by itself, not simultanously. This was to determine if the low speed could be attributed to software or the setup of the notebook, but all three displayed speed tests between 200 - 400Mbps range.

Here is a link to my speed tests: https://www.speedtest.net/results?sh=3bccab8e4dea7901427f5d5741008eb7

The decrease in speed appear to have gone down in early December. I only upgraded to the 1.5 Gbps service on Thursday February 22nd, so I don't think it's related to that change.

It is since I have upgraded to 1.5 G, that I have started to look deeper into my network because I expected the speeds to be at least what I getting before and hopefully a bit better.

Okay, but that's not really the case here.  @kwGuy is running with the Ignite Gateway in Bridge Mode, through an eero mesh that is connected with a Gigabit Ethernet connection, so the maximum aggregate throughput will still be 940Mb/s., with 60 Mb/s of the available bandwidth on the GigE link consumed by protocol overhead.

There is also no reason why @kwGuy  should be seeing lower speeds, unless the device is connected to a secondary node in the mesh and the mesh itself is slow.

Really, we should be testing with a computer that is Ethernet-connected directly to the gateway, ideally with Bridge Mode disabled.  If you still cannot attain transfer rates of 940 Mb/s, then look at signal levels and error stats in "Gateway > Connection > Rogers Network"

Once you are able to attain Gigabit speeds with existing equipment, to be able to take advantage of the 1.5 Gigabit connection to the Rogers network, you need to either run your Ignite Gateway in "gateway" mode or use an external router that can connect to the gateway using a 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet connection.
