Just got a Rogers’ door hanger? Now what?

Just got a Roger’s door hanger in Nepean (Ottawa), Ontario with a “work begins soon on the Roger’s fibre powered network.” I’m in a townhouse Condo with no municipal grass for Roger’s to run lines through. Does this mean Roger’s is running FTTH through the existing conduit that runs their coax cables? Or are they just upgrading their nodes? What is the timeline usually for these things? Can anyone provide some context to an otherwise generic door hanger?

@KingofRome  Usually, a door hanger is left either to notify you of downtime or of (potentially disruptive) work that needs to be done on your property.  Either way, there is work scheduled, so Rogers should be able to tell you exactly what will be happening.  Send a private message to @CommunityHelps  and ask them to check the construction schedule for your area.

The "844-760-3908" phone number is also used for FTTH-related inquires or to provide consent for on-site work.  (See the FTTH FAQ). However, that may just be the contact number for Rogers' construction project office.

 

Your door hanger says that Rogers is "planning to double our current capacity in your neighbourhood".   To me, it looks like Rogers is planning to upgrade your fibre node and/or perform a node split, not upgrade your area to FTTH.

Any way to tell from my current stats what’s more likely? Is a node split similar to a mid split? Am I on an analog fibre node or the new DAA / R-PHY node?

@KingofRome I would guess that you are still on an old analog fibre node.  Your power levels and SNR look good.  However, with a new DAA/R-PHY node, I would expect to see a fifth upstream OFDMA channel provisioned (even if it is not yet in use) in addition to the four QAM channels that you currently have.

No, they are two different things.

 

There are actually different kinds of "node splits" that can be done but when a node is at or beyond its capacity, you need to do a physical node split.  That involves installing a new node, and then shedding/redistributing load by moving a portion of homes served by the existing node to the new node.

 

Moving to "mid split" involves allocating more spectrum for upstream traffic.  Since neighbourhood cable plants supported bidirectional traffic, upstream channels used the 5-42 MHz frequency range.  With mid-split, you allocate frequencies between 5-85 MHz for upstream traffic and frequencies above 108 MHz for downstream traffic.  Sounds simple enough but it actually involves quite a bit of effort to swap out amplifiers and other legacy equipment to support this change, and to then do this across hundreds/thousands of neighbourhoods.

It's the last day that Rogers was scheduled to do work, and it looks like they finished their job. All week my uncorrectables were horrible, in the 10k plus range. But as of now, as far as i can tell though nothing has changed with our internet. Still don't have the OFDMA channel on upload for example. Was it maybe just a node split if it took all week? but even so i would have expected them to do a mid-split or node upgrade? how would i know? Stats below:

@KingofRome  Can you say anything about what the crews were doing while they were working on your street?  It's possible that they could have finished construction of a new node but still need to test for stability before performing the actual cut-over.

That makes sense. When they were here last week, it was 3 trucks from "Dependable HomeTech" doing the work.  Did see them inspecting the node hanging off the power lines, but couldn't tell what else they were doing as i wasn't home most of the week. I did just got another message saying there may be service interruptions for upgrades tomorrow (March 8th 2024). So maybe everything was installed last week and only now they are cutting over tomorrow as you suggest? Will check again on Saturday if anything changes with the stats.

@KingofRome When Rogers upgraded the node in my area last year, crews installed the new equipment and got everything pre-staged, then completed the cut-over overnight at 2AM a few days later.  My service was out for about two hours during this time.

Just as an update. Reset the modem and as of today March 9, 2024, nothing has changed with the network status. No mid split as my max upload channel is still 38mhz. No OFDMA upload channel. Don’t know how to determine if a node split happened. But even if it did, I’d expect them to upgrade the nodes there to the new versions with OFMDA. So as of now it looks like maintenance hasn’t done anything to fix or upgrade our poor upload speeds. Actually had a Senior Roger’s tech out Thursday here and he said even at the tap max he got was 24mbps upload. So clearly a problem with the rogers network. And no idea what maintenance is doing other than sending spurious messages about possible downtime and work happening on the network.
