Installing new Router with rogers modem

PapaStove
I've been here awhile

I have been having issues on and off since installing my 2.5 GB internet outside Hagersville.  It seems to resolve itself, and lately, I have been seeing connectivity and unstable bandwidth issues while doing Zoom meetings, which I started a week ago.  There are complaints of my audio cutting in / out consistently, and when checking speedtest.net, I see speeds <200 dl AND higher uploads on my wireless laptop.

A senior tech came yesterday and, without doing any physical tests, basically fixed the issue on the devices within the house.

Prior to his arrival, I purchased a brand new TP-Link Archer Be800 Wi-Fi 7 router. Every time I try to install this router, I get the exclamation mark!!!, which indicates no internet.

I have been trying two methods through splitter boxs and direct connection to the modem.

I have further tried taking the router to a buddy's house who has a similar type set up and the SAME ROUTER, and it connected perfectly.  Borrowed an ethernet cable from him tested it prior to leaving and brought it home and

Connected it directly to the nokia modem and it still failed????

Yet when I hook up the rogers equipment it works but inconsistently????

Thoughts?

Good morning @PapaStove!

I would recommend contacting TP-Link directly for troubleshooting support with their router if you're having difficulties with it.

The only thing I can suggest is to make sure that your modem is in bridge mode if you wish to use your own router: How to turn Bridge Mode On or Off for your modem - Rogers

@PapaStove From your post, it looks like you have a 2.5 Gigabit FTTH Internet service.

How are you connecting your router?  Are you disconnecting your Rogers XB7 Gateway and installing your TP-Link router in its place?

It looks like the BE800 has10 GigE WAN ports.  You should be using a Category 6 (or better) Ethernet cable when connecting to the ONT; it will try to negotiate a 10gbps connection, which it may or not be able to do.  Make sure that you are using the correct port on the router for WAN connectivity and that it is configured correctly, and that the link status is active when connected to your Nokia ONT.  If the router and ONT cannot negotiate a connection, the WAN link will not activate.  The WAN connection type should be set to Auto/DHCP and you should have both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols enabled.

Note that Rogers does not officially support using your own router.  If you are experiencing problems with your service, or if you are causing problems with their service, they may insist that you revert back to a Rogers-supported configuration.  It is also technically possible for Rogers to lock down access and only allow your Rogers Xfinity Gateway to connect via the ONT, but I have not heard of them actually doing that anywhere yet.
