Ignite WiFi Gateway Bridge mode with 2.5 Mini PC with OPNSense slow issue

Hello,

Looking for assistance/ solution to resolve the speed drop

I am in 1.5g with Ignite WiFi Gateway modem on Bridge mode. Connectee with 2.5g (4 port)Mini PC with OPNSense.

When I connect to main port (2.5g) on the router getting 200-300 Mbps, while connected to secondary port of the modem (1 Gbps) getting 900 Mbps.

Exact configuration except switching port. Speed check is done on wired PC with 2.5 Gbps lan port.

Just wondering why is slow when connected to main (2.5 g) port? Is anything need to be changed on OPNSENSE...

@tp007  I am currently running pfSense 2.7.0 on a mini PC (Intel hardware) and getting full speeds with my Ignite 1.5 Gigabit (DOCSIS) service:

I have also tested with OPNsense 2.7 and achieved similar results.  (Personal opinion: I like the OPNsense UI better but pfSense seems to be more solid.)

Have you tried running speed tests with any other computers connected to your OPNsense gateway, even those with a 1 Gigabit Ethernet adapter?

Have you also tried testing with your PC directly connected to the 2.5 GigE port on the Ignite Gateway?  If you are running Windows, I'm guessing that something weird is happening with your computer at the higher data rates.

If you test with the Rogers Speed Test, what does the final download/upload speed graph look like?  Are you initially seeing speeds in excess of 1.5 Gbps and then finding that the data rates fall off as the speed test progresses?

I am far from an expert on Windows, but I do recall several threads on this forum discussing Windows Auto Tuning and the fact that it should be disabled to perform well.

There have been numerous threads on slow speeds, and the cause is almost always something to do with the hardware or settings used by the customer. Check out the following thread and the first few posts following the link:

I was able to attain more than 1.8 Gbps over Wi-Fi 6E, with default settings on Windows 11 Pro.

IP protocol stacks on different operating systems employ various algorithms and heuristics to maximize throughput AND behave well when they detect signs of network congestion.  (e.g. increasing latency or packet loss.). There are often settings that can be changed to fine-tune how the operating system and network stack behaves.  However, any such settings must only be changed methodically and prescriptively.  If you blindly follow "optimization" tips that you find on the Internet without understanding the actual problem that you are trying to fix, you can make your current situation even worse.

When I tested OPNSense on Bufferbloat getting over 1G

for the same config, when I tested on Speedtest, getting around ~200 .

Not sure, why speedtest is low when WAN connected to 2.5G port of the modem

@tp007 What does the graph look like when you run the Rogers Speed Test?  Do you initially see data flowing at full speed, then a rapid drop-off followed by a steady rise that never attains the expected full speed?

Before you go looking for any new hardware, I would HIGHLY recommend that you remove ALL third-party network gear and use your Ignite Gateway, in "gateway mode", for all network connectivity.  Then, confirm that you can attain speeds in excess of 1.5 Gbps with your test PC.

Once you get that working, reset your OPNsense box back to defaults (or try installing pfSense, or OpenWrt on your mini PC) and configure it as a simple IPv4 router/firewall.  Put it in the network path between your PC and Ignite Gateway; do not enable Bridge Mode.  Confirm that you can attain speeds in excess of 1.5 Gbps with your test PC.

Now you can enable Bridge Mode on your Ignite Gateway.  Confirm that you can attain speeds in excess of 1.5 Gbps with your test PC.
