Will I be charged for receiving texts while in India?

avikumar1495
I've been around

I want to confirm if I will be charged for receiving texts while in India. While the answer to this should be no as the plan offered to me includes Unlimited calling and texting within Canada. However, I heard from a few friends that tell me that if I receive network on my Rogers number for ANY ACTIVITY while in India, I will be charged 15$/day which is the Roam-like home plan. Looking for help!

@avikumar1495 : Here are my comments.

1. Your friends are correct. What you have as far as Canada and US doesn't apply in India.  You therefore have several choces.

2. You can purchase a SIM in India which will likely be your cheapest option.

3. You can leave your phone in airplane mode (or totally off) which will negate any Roam Like Home charges.  You can use something like What's App for texts via WiFi in Airplane mode. No charge.

4. You can delete Roam Like Home from your package and utilize the "per use" charges in India, although each call or text can be quite expensive, if you limit your use, this can be relatively inexpensive.

5. Any app updates, notifications, location data, texts, etc (when not in airplane mode) will create charges either per use or roam like home.  Here's an FAQ:

Receiving a text message should NOT trigger a roam like home, but to be quite honest, other apps on your phone are usually the culprit which will trigger a charge. I would not use text messaging when in another country even if you paid me, I would stick to using the wifi in the hotel or resort, and use a third party app such as Whats App or sending email messages instead.
