We've had the older Rogers 500MB package for a few years now. A few months ago when the Xfinity conversion happened we got an offer to switch to the 1GB plan, then just this week got another offer to switch to the Xfinity Pro 2G plan. I have done multiple speed tests since the first upgrade to 1GB and again after switching to the 2GB plan and my speeds are still the same as they were on the 500MB plan. I understand the Rogers warning "speeds may vary" but i would have thought the quadrupling my speeds should have given me better results? I am wondering if i need to upgrade my modem / gateway? It is the same one i've had for 5yrs or more. The Rogers disclaimer about speeds shows "Based on 802.11ax technology included with the Rogers Xfnity WiFi Gateway (Gen 2) modem and above." Mine is the old black original gateway. Any thoughts ?

Your speed depends on a few factors:
* the speed of the CPU of the computer that you are using to run the speed-test. If the CPU is 100% busy during the test, that will "bottle-neck" the speed;
* the Ethernet cable between your computer and the cable-modem -- older "CAT-5" cables max-out at 100 (not 1000) Mbps. Use a "CAT-5e" or "CAT-6" cable to achieve 1000 Mbps.
* if using WiFi, instead of an Ethernet cable, check that your computer's WiFi adapter supports the newer "AC" (or "AX") protocol, which max-out around 1200 Mbps. If the adapter supports the "N" protocol, you will max-out around 400 Mbps, until you connect a USB-to-WiFi adapter mini-plug that supports "AC" protocol, and disable the built-in WiFi adapter.
* if your computer has an Ethernet adapter, it probably supports 10/100/1000 speeds -- nothing faster. You need to use a "CAT-6" cable to exceed 1000 Mbps.
* your cable-modem may have one port that is capable of 2500 Mbps. If you have a "better-than-1000" Ethernet adapter, connect the CAT-6 cable to that "2.5 Gps" socket.
* run the speed-test simultaneously on 2 or 3 computers, to see if the total of the speeds comes close to the "2.0 Gbps" service that you are subscribed to.

@Weimer369 : if you are paying for more than 1Gbps, you should have one of the newer Gateway modem/routers, models XB7 or XB8. Many people have equipment/computer firmware that is not capable of more than 1Gbps though. See the following post for additional information:

Thanks for the replies...I spoke with support today and they confirmed that i needed a new gateway / modem and have scheduled a tech to bring it Saturday (because apparently they don't have them in store or online, the ONLY way to get one is from a technician). I am running a pretty solid system but i admit i haven't looked into my network cables in a while, definitely something to check.
