New fibre install - what equipment will I get for this setup, and how well does it work?

DevonK
I plan to stick around
My condo building just had fibre connection points installed in its units. Despite my requezt, Rogers did not put this connection point in my study, where my current cable modem is along with 2 PCs and a VOIP box, all of which need a wired Ethernet connection. I'm unhappy about losing my directly wired connections via a Gateway v2 mdem to my PCs. How does Rogers deal with my situation, and how well does their solution work? I can't tolerate slow speeds or high latency with the sims I run. TIA.

I hope you are aware that you can run your own ethernet cable from the modem to the preferred room of your desire, provided you have the skillsets and knowledge to do so, otherwise you are free to hire someone to run an ethernet wire for you to the room of your choice.

I shouldn't have to drill through my walls to get the internet service back up to what I have now. Rogers at the very least will need to provide a wireless node with wired Ethernet outbound connectors for the PCs and VOIP in my study that does not degrade the service. Our building's contract with Rogers specifies there is to be no degradation of service if equipment changes are made.

Re: New fibre install - what equipment will I get for this setup, and how well does it work?

Good morning @DevonK,

I understand that some of our customers have very specific needs when it comes to the location of the modem. Were you home when this installation took place? When our technicians are installing services in your home, you can ask them to install the modem wherever you like. Our technicians may make recommendations but it is ultimately your decision where we install the service.

While we can provide Xfinity WiFi Boost Pods: Easy Setup Guide – Rogers Xfinity WiFi Boost Pods - Rogers they are limited in their speed capacity and if you're running highly demanding simulations, these pods may not be ideal for your needs.

If you wish to move the modem, there may be a $50 fee involved and drilling may be required in order to get the fibre line where it needs to go in order for us to install the modem where you want it.

As at @Pauly mentioned, the best solution may be for you or a privately hired contractor to run Ethernet to where you want it in your condo. We do not provide direct support for the installation of Ethernet ports, nor do we fish Ethernet through the walls.

Should you wish to proceed with moving the modem, please feel free to send a private message to @CommunityHelps so we can assist you further. For more information on how our Private Messaging system works, you can find out more here.

Regards,

RogersCorey

@DevonK  In a condo, it's typical for the fibre termination to be placed in your unit's telco closet.  If there is conduit leading to your wall plates, your building management team may allow you to select another location for the demarc, or you can extend the demarc at your own expense.  However, if your unit's construction does not allow for easy installation at a desired location or if the installation crew were given specific directions by your building management team, you are stuck and should contact your building management to work out a solution.

Yes I was at home. I was told by installer I had no choice as to the room the fibre would be dropped into. They were going to do the wiring in the living room for the entire stack of units but told me that was blocked because one of the units had a wall unit blocking access to the living room coax cable conduit. They use the existing coax cable drop behind the wall for the wiring. This was a third party contractor hired by Rogers doing the wire install, not Rogers techs.

Old condo here, no telco closet at all, just in-wall wiring. See above answer.
We have been given the option of booking a rogers tech to come in and switch our connection from coax to fibre. As it's not mandatory (at this time) to make the switch, I'm sticking with the coax for now. If switching becomes mandatory, as I fear it will be, I will have to talk to a Rogers supervisor and building management about what is possible.

they will simply fish the fibre line thru an existing conduit where your cable tv wire is currently being fed thru, so it depends if the conduits could go all the way into a telco closet in the hallway of your floor  then you would place the modem by one of the existing cable outlets in your room.
