Changing the default subnet on my modem/router

Hi all,

I need some information regarding the setup of my Rogers modem:

We connect via VPN to our company’s network.  Our IT department is telling me that I need to change the default subnet on my modem/router from 192.168.0.x to another subnet (preferable 192.168.1.x).

My questions:

1) I cannot find the password to log into the modem; is there a default password so I can get into the modem by browsing to 192.168.0.1?

- if that is not known, if I do a reset on the modem, will I still be able to connect to the internet i.e. does the modem contain enough info to connect to the Rogers internet?

- I would do that so I can use the default passwords and then set a new password

- what would those default passwords be?

- the modem is a TP-Link, Archer, AX55(CA), AX3000 Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 router

2) Is it okay to change the IP subnet to 192.168.1.x  with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

Greetings @tboucher002!

Please have a look at the following link for assistance in putting your modem in bridge mode so that you can follow the instructions from your IT department in your router's settings:

How to turn Bridge Mode On or Off for your modem - Rogers

  1. On your computer or device, open an internet browser.
  2. Enter 10.0.0.1 and hit Enter.
  3. Sign in with the following credentials:
    • Username Admin
    • Password: The default is “password” but you’ll have been asked to change it on your first sign-in.
  4. Select Gateway.
  5. Select At a Glance.
  6. Next to Bridge Mode:
    • Select Enable to bridge the modem
    • Select Disable to turn bridging off.

@RogersCorey I believe that @tboucher002 is looking for information on how to configure the TP-Link Archer AX55 router that he/she/they have installed.

TP-Link's Canadian support page does not seem to offer manuals for download but the US site does: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/download/archer-ax55/

That should provide you with all the technical information that you need, and more.

I don't currently use TP-Link routers but will try to help as much as I can.

According to the manual, the default username and password is admin / admin

If that does not work, the manual has information on how to reset back to factory defaults or how to recover passwords if you are using cloud-based management.

2) Is it okay to change the IP subnet to 192.168.1.x  with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

There should be no problem with changing the address range assigned to your local LAN.  Just keep this in mind when the product documentation and help pages assume that you are using default configuration settings.

Once you are able to access the local admin UI, go to "Advanced / Network / LAN" and change your router's IP address to 192.168.1.1

After saving this change, reboot your router, if it does not do this already.  You may also need to reboot some of your devices so that they pick up the new local network settings.

Hi all,

After we have reset the router to factory defaults and we browse to 192.168.0.1, do we need a default username/password or does it prompt us to create a new one?

Thanks

Travis

Re: Changing the default subnet on my modem/router

Hello, @tboucher002.

After performing a factory reset, you must use the default login credentials. Once logged in, you may change the login password.

Cheers,

Pro tip - use something very unusual for your subnet at home, like 192.168.242.X.

Why?  So if you are ever using a VPN from someplace like a hotel you don't get screwed because they are using the same subnet.

Ask me how I know?
