1.5 Gbps upgrade, still on non-ignite tv/modem/phone

Smols
I plan to stick around

Its an older hitron white modem, 1Gbps ports.

Is there any way to get the higher speeds and keep our tv, modem and phone how it is without "upgrading" aka downgrading to ignite tv?

Is there any workaround to this issue just to get 2.5 Gbps ports on my modem?

Hello, @Smols.

Thanks for being our Community member; we appreciate your post.

With the legacy platform, the CODA-4582 is the top-of-the-line modem; as you know, it only supports 1 Gbps. A bandwidth of 1.5 Gbps can be futuristic; however, you must migrate to our new Ignite platform.

If you'd like, we can help with the migration. You can send us a private message @CommunityHelps. You can find details about our private messaging in this blog.

Cheers,

Re: 1.5 Gbps upgrade, still on non-ignite tv/modem/phone

Just to jump into this conversation, the 4582 modem can handle up to 5 Gb/s on the downstream side using OFDM channels and up to 1.2 Gb/s using QAM channels.  The upstream is limited to 700 Mb/s using OFDMA channels and 320 Mb/s using QAM channels.

The outgoing limitation are the ethernet ports which can only run 1 Gb/s.  So, in terms of higher data rates for the modem, as a whole, yes the 4582 is technically capable of running higher data rates.

If someone is looking to run 1.5 Gb/s to a given device, then yes, a modem change to a Comcast XB6, XB7, XB8 is required.

So, the question of the day is whether or not Rogers will allow the 4582 modem to run at data rates over 1 Gb/s, understanding of course that the ethernet ports are limited to 1 Gb/s.  If you want to run multiple ports at 1 Gb/s, will Rogers allow this, and if not, why not?  Thats a policy issue.

So, @RogersMoin thats a question for you, and the network engineering staff.

Just to clarify, only the XB7 and XB8 have the 2.5 GigE LAN port.  Comcast also officially says that the XB6 supports a maximum throughput of 1 Gbps.  If you currently have an XB6 and upgrade to Ignite 1.5 Gigabit, Rogers will upgrade you to an XB7.

The bigger question is when Rogers will sunset their legacy Internet, TV and Home Phone services.

Most people won't notice any difference between the 1 Gb/s service and 1.5 Gb/s, so the new speed tier is really an additional enticement for legacy and TPIA customers to migrate to Rogers Ignite Internet... and for existing 1 Gigabit Ignite TV/Internet customers to switch to a current in-market bundle.

Rogers upgraded 1 Gigabit customers to 50 Mb/s uploads (where possible) but I can't see them upgrading any 1 Gigabit customers to 1.5 Gig, and I definitely can't see them offering 1.5 Gigabit speeds to legacy customers.
