eSIM now available in our Rogers portal?

Hmm

I read a blog that this has finally become available.  Would the official Rogers mods/admins confirm if this is true?

If it is indeed possible, would you please clarify if there is a cost associated with obtaining an eSIM?

Additionally, I'm interested in understanding any limitations related to swapping or installing eSIMs. For example, if someone has a temporary device or switches between Android and iPhone or vice versa, is there a limit on how frequently one can request an eSIM after it's activated or is the eSIM transferable? And what about if you ever change your mind and need a physical SIM? With Shaw, there never was a fee for swapping back and forth.

I recall that with Shaw, there was a restriction of generating only one eSIM QR code per month.

Hi!

It's absolutely a thing! And it's free 😁 I tried on iOS and Android and it worked flawlessly. Plus, it took maybe a big 5 minutes total.

(Also available on Fido).

As for your other inquiries, they're beyond my knowledge 😞 I'll have to let someone else answer them, sorry!

I plan to stick around

Is there any advantage in using Esim over a physical sim?

@samsvoc63 Yes, there are but in my experience, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.

The only advantage as I see it is when you're travelling and the provider (carrier) offers an eSIM. Otherwise, I prefer a physical SIM as I have run into some major issues with eSIMs especially if you're using an Android device. It's still a new thing now and it's baffling  how Apple elected to remove the physical SIM slot on iPhone 14s and newer model (USA only). In Asia and other countries, dual physical SIMs are common.

Re: eSIM now available in our Rogers portal?

I haven't personally had any issues with my Rogers eSIM and before that, I used a Telus eSIM. I have a Samsung s23 Ultra. My only complaint with them originally, was that Telus was actually clueless in how they worked and activating one with them took almost an hour. The Rogers eSIM literally took a few minutes after porting in.

One advantage to an eSIM, is that you can buy it online instead of having to go into a store to get a pSIM replacement. This was important when I was in the US and my SIM card was acting up. I literally got it online without having to wait for one to be shipped to me. Someone can't just pop the SIM out of your device and use it in another if your device is ever lost or stolen. Yes. The eSIM stores a lot more information than a pSIM but your device would need to be compromised to get access to that information.

In China, eSIM's are illegal because they can be used to circumvent the countries censorship laws and because foreign SIM's in China are harder for the government to trace.

@LordDrakkon  Thanks for sharing your insights on China and why they don't allow eSIMs. I know in countries like Taiwan you typically can't get an eSIM as a foreigner, but locals can.

I've had extensive experience with eSIMs when I was with Freedom and Shaw. All is good until you start adding more than one eSIM or you change devices, say iPhone to Android.

I need some clarification again.

I visited one Mall retailer (Wireless Wave) which includes Rogers, Fido, Bell, Telus, etc. They informed me that now all we need to do (existing Rogers/Fido customers only) to obtain an eSIM QR code is go to our profile via the "Change SIM" option. There is no longer a voucher needed from the store.

Can anyone confirm?

That's correct (and free). Too bad that I can't post a screenshot..
