Rogers Advanced Security behaviour

deansj
I've been here awhile

I have activated Advanced Security.  That's a good thing.  My thinking is that the  6 attacks in the past week targeting a specific PC on my home network was blocked by this service.  I suspect (but could be wrong) that had the Advanced Security failed, Norton would have blocked these but who knows.

In my attempt to increase my security posture, I found out that "NordVPN's ThreatProtectionPro service is disabled by Rogers.  Nord suggested this is quite likely.  However it seems that the conflict is when you go into the Gateway console and set the IPV4 firewall settings to High.  It seems to work fine with that setting at Medium, however the protection is less.

Question: Is the Rogers Advanced Security protection the same as or compatible with the firewall setting?  If I wish to use the NordVPN ThreatProtectionPro service, can I safely assume that the Medium level of the Firewall sufficient.

Any thought would be appreciated.

John

It's really hard to express an informed opinion about Advanced Security because it's essentially a "black box" service that you can only turn on or off.  The service can only protect you against known threats but there is no information about what specific threats the service will protect you against.  Many people here have also reported that reputable services break when Advanced Security is enabled, without any other problems ever getting reported on the Dashboard.

I, personally, have a low opinion about the usefulness of Advanced Security.  I also prefer to advocate employing safe computing best practices and not engage in any risky online behaviour rather that relying on any security programs or services (that can never be 100% effective) to protect you.

That said, the fact that Advanced Security reported that it blocked attacks against a computer on your home network IS disconcerting.  It's possible that your computer has been infected with a virus or malware, so that is something that you must investigate.

Here are the Firewall Security Levels that you can enable on the Gateway:

Personally, I'm fine having just Minimum security enabled.  It blocks all incoming connections from the Internet to your internal home network, without blocking the use of any applications.

Medium Security is also fine too.  It is there to block file sharing services.  If you are concerned about your kids using these services to download or share copyrighted content, use this security level.

High Security allows devices on your home network to only access specific (and the most common) services online.  If that breaks NordVPN's ThreatProtectionPro, or any other benign or useful applications, you are better off dropping down to using a lower firewall security level.

I'm also totally fine with having Advanced Security enabled.  I wouldn't rely on it to protect against all online threats but if it has proven itself to be useful to you in blocking or identifying even some threats then, by all means, leave it enabled.
