Will I be charged for receiving texts while in the US?

I have Rogers home internet and since I got that, I am being offered a mobile plan with Rogers as well. However, before shifting from my current provider, I wanted to confirm if I will I be charged for receiving texts while in the US? While the answer to this should be no as the plan being offered to me includes Unlimited calling and texting within Canada. However, more than 5 chat executives tell me that if I receive network on my Rogers number for ANY ACTIVITY while in the US, I will be charged 12$/day which is the Roam like home plan. Confused here. Looking for help!

Good morning @tkaran50,

Welcome to the Rogers Community and thank you for your post. Making sure you're well informed before leaving is key to avoid any bad surprises once you're back.

Thanks for reaching out to us via private message - I thought I'd reply here as well in case other users have the same question.

If you're covered for text messages in Canada, you will not be charged for incoming SMS while in the US. However, you need to ensure that your Data Roaming is turned off in the Settings of your phone to prevent any Roam Like Home charge. That way, you won't incur charges if you don't place or answer phone calls or send out text messages.

Data roaming is turned off by default on many devices. To use data while travelling with Roam Like Home, you’ll need to turn on data roaming in your device settings. If you want to make sure you're not charged when your phone simply connects to the network, make sure you keep data roaming turned off.

Hope this helps!

I was charged by rogers for Roam like home, while my data was off . I had mistakenly send 2 text. not instant messages on wifi. Though I would be charged international text charge (ie) .15 cents

Greetings @apicano!

A warm welcome to the Community and congratulations on your first post! I hope you had a great trip! 😊

With Roam Like Home, it enables you to be able to use the talk, text and data included in your plan while travelling in an eligible destination. As you were visiting in the US, the charge would be $12/day up to a maximum of 20 days per monthly bill and for eligible international destinations, it would be $15/day up to a maximum of 20 days per monthly bill.

As you utilized the SMS feature while roaming, it would most definitely trigger a Roam Like Home charge based on your destination in accordance to the amounts depicted above.

I have a super helpful link which will shed some light on some Tips While Travelling to minimize/avoid roaming charges in the furture.

Regards,

Same happened to me too.  A $12 charge for sending a text message within the US is unreasonable. No wonder people purchase eSIMs and use WhatsApp instead of Roam Like Home.

Using WhatsApp is pretty much a guaranteed way to rack up roaming charges. That app can hand off calls and texts to cellular, which makes them billable, without any warning.
