Roam Like Home

Hello, I am a new Rogers customer, recently switched over from Fido. I noticed on my latest bill that I was charged for 2 days of Roam Like Home ($12/day) and I called customer service. They informed me that this is because I received a few phone calls when I was in the US (even though I DID NOT answer the calls). I have data roaming option switched off as well. 

I am hoping to get a confirmation through the community group here if what I was told above is correct? This is something new to me as I have never been charged by Fido (for Fido Roam) when I was overseas unless I answered the calls. I am quite shocked that Rogers will charge RLH charges even though I did not answer the incoming calls.

Thank you for the reply and I completely understand how the roaming charges work. However, my question is if it is true that I will be charged RLH fee even though I do not answer the phone calls when I am outside of Canada? I would like to see who calls when I travel and decide if I want to return the phone call instead of switching to airplane mode or pull out the sim card. 

I always have my international data roaming option switched off when travelling overseas.

1. I'm not sure you do.  Here's the paragraph from the link I provided indicating that: 

If you don't do one of the above, you will likely encounter charges, regardless of other phone settings because some apps override cell preference and some apps do automatic downloads or use location services or some other function that causes them to be in touch with a cell tower in the international location.  As soon as the phone "sees" an international cell tower, there will be charges. One way to tell is if you don't see "Rogers" at the top of the phone but rather a service provider from the country you are visiting.

I just called them to switch me to pay as you go when it comes to international roaming as that is the quickest and easiest option. I have never experienced this problem with FIDO and I just think that it is very odd that they have different policies given that they are the within the same group.

@miscazn : Although Fido is within Rogers group, the Fido "Silo" obviously has different plans, with different charges.  In your case I'm not sure it was the unanswered incoming call that triggered RLH, rather it could be an incoming or outgoing text, or location service or app update or any other item that causes your phone to connect to the international cell tower.

PAYGo is probably a good option if you don't use your phone much internationally.  I have a total Pre-paid (formerly called PAYGo) plan and use WiFi when travelling avoiding all charges.  I may send or receive an occasional text if there is no other option.

It has been known for 25+ years that even if you do not answer a call when roaming, once the call reaches your voicemail box,  your account may be treated as roaming, and may be subject to a pay per use roam, or trigger the activation of roam like home on your account.

It sucks, that in the 25 years that they have not found a solution for this so the best thing is to take out your sim card completely if you want to avoid roaming charges, and use wi-fi.
