On February 7 I switched from an ancient Android phone to a used iPhone S at the Rogers store. The agent verified it was working by calling the new phone and letting it ring, but not answering. Yesterday I downloaded my call history and see this:
Call History
Date & Time Charge Number Call Description Call Type Usage
02/08/2024 10:54 $0.70 (519) 421-3127 Outgoing Call Local Call
02/07/2024 14:20 $0.70 Incoming SMS
02/07/2024 14:20 $0.70 49988 Outgoing SMS
I know the (519) 421-3127 number is the Rogers store, which I somehow called by accident (I just did it again, have to figure out how to stop doing that, the iPhone interface is so foreign to me) . But what are those 2 incoming and outgoing texts that happened while I was at the store? I can't find any record of them. This iPhone is rapidly using up my airtime.

@OLDYELLR : I mentioned in post 2 of this thread that it is extremely easy to initiate a call when reviewing your call history. Perhaps that has happened to you again?

1. When you select the phone icon at the bottom of the screen you then get another set of options. If you select "Recents" this will bring up a list of your recent calls. As soon as you click on one of those, the phone will call that number. I've made this mistake a couple of times myself.
2. Perhaps the agent wanted to make sure SMS went through while you were at the store? You should be able to view those by selecting the message button on the phone, which is on the bottom-right of my iPhone SE 2020.
3. Just as an FYI, if you set up the phone properly (it may even be the default settings), you can send iMessages to other people with iPhones at no charge when you're on WiFi. In your messages list, iMessages show as blue, while SMS are green

Hello OLDYELLR,
Did someone else own this used iPhone? Does it have any apps installed on it that are not part of the factory installation? If so, you should do a Factory Reset of this phone to clear those out. Some apps have permission to make and receive calls as well as SMS messages.too.
Also looking at the time stamps the incoming and outgoing SMS were done on a different day and time than when you visited the Rogers store.

Huh? He was there on February 7. I agree that you may wish to do a reset to factory, but that may not be necessary if everything make sense.

Yes I bought it used, but reset and unlocked. Only apps would be those originally from Apple. I'm going with what @57 said, Rogers may have automatically sent the SMS when I switched to confirm everything worked.

@OLDYELLR, did you have any more of these SMSs going to 49988?

Since I switched to an iPhone, I've seen several instances of calls incoming and outgoing on my PayGo cellphone and haven't yet figured out how to stop them.

Some time ago I switched from an ancient Android phone that stopped doing email to an iPhone 6S and it's been giving me trouble with the occasional call I did not make. Today I heard a faint call in the background on the iPhone, and when I checked my call history I discovered a Long Distance call for $4.70 I did not make. What can In do to stop this happening?
Charge | Number | Call Description | Call Type | Usage | |
04/18/2024 18:40 | $4.70 | (800) 328-0402 | Outgoing Call | LD Call |

Check out my post on Live Voicemail and make sure it's turned off if you don't want it.

Worry about the scam text and telephone calls. Even if you don't answer the phone. You will still be charged for them. I lost $100 over the year getting 8-12 a day. One spam call and cost me $23.00
When I asked for my money back. I was told I could only get 4 months as thats as far back as records show and Rogers kept the rest.
Switched to unlimited talk and text for $20.00. Twice the price, but don't have to pay for spam
Funny that the texts and phone calls are less than a 1/3 of the previous pay as you go after I switched

@paneraica : Just as an FYI, it is possible to call Rogers and have your voicemail turned off. I did that long ago and never need to pay for spam calls or retrieving voicemail. I still see who called in my phone's call log and call them back, typically using my home phone, if it's someone I know (in my phone's directory). Unknown callers are simply ignored. I realize that this may not be something for everyone, but most people who use their phones a lot are not on pre-paid...
Every 3 months I call Rogers and have any spam text charges credited back to my account. I always forward any spam text I receive to "SPAM" (7726) when I receive them, so they are easy for the CSR to spot in my transaction history. I usually get about 2-10 spam texts every 3 months.
Interestingly, I just looked at my transaction history and only have one spam text since June. Perhaps my number is no longer on their "list", although some spammers simply use auto-dialers. I won't bother calling just for one text.

Thanks, but its not voice mail. Any text or phone call. I don't even answer and I got charged. I actually forgot and they only gave me back 4 months, but took $60. Funny that I canceled and switched to unlimited call and text for $20.00 a month and they couldn't even throw in 1 GB of data. And get this. No spam texts or calls. Makes me wonder if it's actually Rogers sending out fake spam calls and texts and grabbing the money back from pay as you go customers. Otherwise. Why would I suddenly stop getting these

1. Is that on prepaid or postpaid? Prepaid is ending in December as discussed in the following thread:
2. A tin foil hat will protect you from these...

No. Just a new monthly payment program. Paid at the end of the month. I just don’t get any GB of data unless I pay $30.00. Stole money from me (and from every pay as you go owner) and they still not happy unless they gouge.
PC Mobile gives 2 GB of data for $19, but not good reviews, so stuck with Roger’s and others no better

I'm confused. Are you on a prepaid or postpaid plan. If you're still on prepaid, then you'll need to switch before December 16, as outlined in the link I provided.
If you need to switch, Rogers has some good pricing (postpaid) if you call the number in that link and Chatr has good prepaid pricing options, both including some data depending on the plan rate and what you want.

I’m guess it’s postpaid now. It’s a regular plan. Not a pay as you go. Just a basic simple plan
