Rogers Wireless Internet, Go Home Lake, Ontario, unusable on weekends

tvgeek1
I'm here a lot

Based on a some longer term usage of Rogers Wireless Internet with Nokia , I write this review, as warning for potential new customers, using Nokia Fastmile 5G Gateway 3.2 at Go Home Lake, Georgian Bay Township.

On weekends the wireless internet is now unusable, while weekdays it works ok but upload speeds are extremely slow, under 1 Mbps. It

Based on my knowledge Rogers wireless is overload in this area- most likely too many users for available cell towers in this area. It has performance issues very similar to Xplornet LTE internet(non satellite).

Good morning @tvgeek1!

If you're encountering issues with your services specifically on weekends in cottage country, it is most likely temporary congestion from cottagers and tourists. I understand this is highly inconvenient.

We can investigate to make sure that there aren't any issues with your local towers that may be contributing to the degraded data on weekends.

Please feel free to send a private message to @CommunityHelps so we can assist you further. For more information on how our Private Messaging system works, you can find out more here.

Because the Nokia FastMile doesn't have an external antenna, we bought a good quality cell phone booster for our cottage which helped our overall signal and speed. I actually am going to buy a better, high gain antenna for it for even more punch. Hope that helps.

We have the same issue in Dalston just north of Barrie on Penetanguishene Rd. Line of sight to a Tower near 400 & Forbes Rd and my meetings on Teams freeze up all the time when I am on camera, go off camera than my voice goes offline. Now general use on weekens like Thanksgiving can't even listen to music on the TV or use my computer reliably.
I have heard from people I know that StarLink is now providing up to 400mbs download and 13-25mbs upload reliably never lower.
Rogers needs to step up their game or someone needs to bring the fiber to use from the corner which is 1/4 km away.

I just purchased the Nokia fastmile 5G and can only get 1 bar for signal. Did the cell phone booster increase your reception and if it did what booster did you use. Appreciate any info you have on this.

Hi. Others users(Wobblypop) have reported that a cell fone booster helps. I do not have any experience with boosters yet.

We are north of Buckhorn Ontario and our tower is about 2km straight through a forest. After getting our cell booster it helped, but on busy times during the summer, the internet speed and latency still tanks. We put the Nokia FastMile on an uninterrupted power supply which was the best thing we could do. The FastMile does not like brown outs that plague us up there. On the Labour day weekend, our internet was so unstable it was almost unusable. In September when it was less busy, our speeds improved. By Thanksgiving our speeds had tripled and the internet became very stable. That was bad news because it indicated that we were getting poor internet from local congestion and interference from tree foliage. This spring we plan to upgrade our cell booster outdoor antenna to a high gain mesh antenna because it can boost the signal up to three times better.
One more note, I was worried about the FastMile in sub zero conditions. So far, it has worked flawlessly, without any issues (knock on wood), even on the nights the temp were below - 20c. Right now in January I have access to our cottage camera system with no delays or chop. It's amazing.
