I have a CGN3 I bought 10 years ago which has always served me well. I am quite happy with my present service but the modem is becoming flaky recently. If I buy a used same model CGN3 (as a backup ) from Kijiji will Rogers activate it for me? I am not anxious to rent a modem or get faster service as it works fine most of the time.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy that CGN3.
Rogers is planning to remove all DOCSIS 3.0 modems from their network by the end of this year. At some point in the very near future, you will need to upgrade your CGN3 to current technology.
Rogers also currently does not allow their direct customers to use their own modems either; you need to use whatever modem/gateway they provide.

G- If I may ask further - what if I buy hitron coda-45 gigabit docsis 3.1 now and activate it now. Would it be grandfathered or would they say no to activating anything they do not rent to me? I really object to renting these things if at all possible, And again thanks for sharing your knowledge. Bruce

Rogers do not activate customer-owned modems and has not for years. (as mentioned in the last sentence of @-G- 's previous post.

@buddymcl As far as I know, the only way to activate a customer-owned modem on the Rogers network today is if you get your Internet service from a third-party (TPIA) provider, such as Start, TekSavvy, Oxio, EBOX, etc.
Rogers includes the price of the "modem rental" in their plans, and their tech support teams are not trained or equipped to support any third-party equipment. They also do not provide security updates for customer-owned equipment... and if they did, what if an update bricked a customer-owned modem? There are plenty of Rogers customers who would rather connect their own routers to a Technicolor TC4400 or a Sercomm DM1000 modem rather than bridge the Rogers gateway. They would be fine with paying the rental and sticking the Rogers-provided gateway in a closet. However, Rogers does not allow them that option.

@buddymcl, what missing from this discussion is why. Simply put, Rogers is on a path to purge all Docsis 3.0 modems and other devices in order to move to Docsis 3.1 and eventually Docsis 4 modems. These modems use Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM) channels for downstream ops and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) channels for upstream ops. Those channels use thousands of low power sub-carriers to carry data instead of the historical and higher power Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) channels that you can see listed in the signal data for your modem. The OFDM and OFDMA channels are more efficient than the QAM channels and eventually, Rogers will be able to offer more bandwidth to its customers, and theoretically lower latency. Rogers has completely failed to explain these basic facts to its customers along with the eventual benefits that current technology will bring to all of its cable and tv customers. The end result is that customers feel as if they are being bullied into upgrading their service plans when they're perfectly happy using their current Docsis 3.0 modems and Nextboxes. A little explanation and knowledge instead of marketing hype would go a long way, personal opinion.
So,
1. If Rogers eventually purges all of the Docsis 3.0 devices from its network, and;
2. if Rogers can clean up its cable plant so that the Docsis 3.1 devices operate as expected,
then Rogers can re-assign the QAM channel space to OFDM and OFDMA channels, benefiting all cable customers.
There are other issues involved in this such as moving from a typical Broadcast type of system using QAM channels to an Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) streaming system and the ability to offer over the top services with the newer and smaller set top boxes for tv. Removing the tv Nextboxes, which use QAM channels is also part of this issue. I won't get into the tv discussion as I'm trying to point out the eventual benefits of moving to Docsis 3.1 and eventually Docsis 4.0

DataLink - Your explanation is totally true and accurate. When I woke up yesterday morning (Aug 4) my CGN3 was dead along with my home phone. When I called Rogers Tech support at 5 am after a 45 minute wait all they wanted was to switch me to a newer modem and up my plan price by 50% to do it. The fellow never mentioned my modem would be dead in 5 months anyway due to the Doscis 3.0 ending. I even had an appointment to change that this morning at 8 am as they said my modem was burnt out. When wiggling the power cord to see which it was the modem came back on and has worked since then. When the tech came all he wanted to do was install the new modem again to flog me the higher price plan. Again he explained nothing about why I should do this. Everything I found out was from you 3 helpful amigos on this forum - if not I would still be in complete ignorance of the situation. Many thanks to you all.
