Need help with Mac Time Machine backup over wifi network

I've been here awhile

No available time machine destination on my network. We use the Rogers Ignite modem/ wifi device which is connected to an Airport Extreme base station (wifi is turned off) via ethernet cable.  The Airport extreme is just being used as a bridge for the WD external hard drive (plugged into the USB port on the Airport Extreme). I am unable to even find the WD for backups now.  It used to work until the end of 2023 and then just stopped. I found out the WD external drive was faulty and got a new one that I know works.  I just can't access the new WD over the wifi network. Have tried rebooting everything and no dice.  Anybody using this sort of scenario successfully?  Thanks.

I have used Time Machine for many years, but I plug the external HDD directly into the Mac computer via USB.  No problems whatsoever. I'm not sure why you would utilize an external device like the Extreme.

The external device is used over the home network to back up several family members Macs. Plus, if you do it over the network you don' t have to plug and unplug. Thanks for your response but it is not helpful.
