FTTH and XB7 in Bridge Mode for 1.5GB Internet Service. Access to 2.5GB Port for Home Network HW?

goink
I've been here awhile

I am scheduled to have Rogers FTTH installed and receive an XB7 Modem/Gateway for 1.5GB Ethernet service.

I want to confirm that the XB7 modem can be enabled in Bridge Mode and that I will have access to a 2.5GB RJ45 Ethernet Port (on the XB7) for my hardware firewall and the connected WiFi Access Point.

My FW and  WiFi 6 AP hardware have 2.5GB capable WAN/LAN Ethernet Ports I can use to take advantage of the 1.5GB speed through my hardware for my Home Network. It works perfectly with my current fibre ISP - Rogers has persuaded me to give their service a try.

I understand that the Rogers FTTH will connect to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) and that copper will be used to connect the ONT to the XB7. Is this the case?

A response from a Technical Expert would be Most Appreciated!

Thank you!

@goink  Will you just be subscribing to Rogers Internet or will you be getting TV and Home Phone as well?

With FTTH, the XB7 must use its 2.5 GigE port for WAN connectivity, and that cannot be active in Bridge Mode.

If you only subscribe to Internet, use of the XB7 is optional; just connect your router's WAN port directly to the ONT's 10 GigE port.

If you do subscribe to Home Phone, you must have the XB7 connected to the network... BUT... what might also work would be to connect a multi-gigabit (2.5, 5 or 10 Gigabit) Ethernet switch to the ONT and then connect both your router and the XB7 to the switch, and they should work fine independently of one another.

If you have Rogers Xfinity (formerly Ignite) TV and Internet, you may be able to run with everything connected to your own network gear, without the XB7, but that configuration may not be entirely stable without an Xfinity Gateway connected to the network.

If you could clarify which Rogers services you will be subscribing to, I can give you more specific advice.

Hi, G!

Thanks for the reply!

Does the 1oGB E RJ45 port on the OTN autorange to 2.5GB speed? If so, I can connect up to my inside equipment's 2.5GBE port (in the case, my Firewall/Router to the OTN with, say, a CAT6/6E cable? Will it work? Then, is the connection protocol PPoE, or something else? Will I be able to achieve the 1.5GB throughput with PPoE or whatever connection protocol is used?

Where can I find the specification of the ONT and a picture for reference?

Thanks,

goink

Is the Rogers ONT "Nokia ONT XS-010X-Q"? Does it do the work of authenticating me on the Rogers network? So, it passed through an ethernet connection to my Firewall/Router?

@goink, the abbreviated specs for the Nokia Optical Network Terminals can be found in this post:

https://communityforums.rogers.com/t5/Internet/How-to-disable-Rogers-Ignite-Wifi-Hub-remote-manageme...

Take a read thru the entire post.

The ONT and modem are specific to your Rogers account, so there is nothing that you have to do other than connect a modem or router to the ONT.

Rogers does not use PPPoE.  Rogers uses DHCP and ethernet ports and cabling beyond the ONT, when it comes to fibre installations.  That's as simple as it can be.

The ONT port should connect at whatever rate your modem supports, up to 10 Gb/s if your router supports that connect rate.  The internet rate will be whatever you subscribe to, but the ONT and router should connect at the highest rate that they can negotiate between the two.

Rogers initially used the Nokia XS-020X-A ONT, which had both a 1 GigE port and a 10GigE port.  I believe that they have now switched to the Nokia XS-010X-Q, which just has a single 10 GigE port.

The XB7 and XB8 Gateways have a 2.5 Gig E port that connects just fine to the Nokia ONT so, yes, it should allow any device with a 2.5 GigE NIC to connect.  However, some have reported problems with their router/firewall not being able connect... usually due to some incompatibility issues with SFP modules that they were using.

Rogers does not use PPPoE.  You should be able to connect by configuring your WAN interface as Auto/DHCP.  Rogers provides both IPv4 and IPv6 (dual stack) connectivity.  The only limitation that I am aware of is that you can only request a /64 prefix delegation.
