Ignite TV series recording missing episodes and what I did to resolve the issue

bert123
I've been here awhile

I have been using Ignite for 3 weeks or so.  It works ok but the UI is mysterious and obtuse.  A showstopper for me was the absence of upcoming episodes for a given series.

My initial series recording setup mostly used the defaults except I chose new and repeat episodes.  Notably I left the selection for "HD Preferred" without exploring the options.  Recording Big Bang Theory having started from the CTV Comedy channel (#46) resulted in episodes recorded on #46 and #7 (CTV Ottawa).  I was surprised but thought it might be useful.  Unlike the legacy Rogers PVR, Ignite avoids recording any given episode multiple times.

This worked for 2 weeks when I noticed there were fewer and fewer scheduled recordings even though the Guide clearly showed episodes that were being skipped.

A Tech support rep told me this happens now and then and after a few attempts to rectify, he said he would open a ticket for me but could not help me.

I fooled around and discovered that after HD Preferred and SD Preferred I could select the original channel only e.g. CTV Comedy and no longer pick up CTV Ottawa.  That was ok with me.  I deleted the series from the Recordings Tab and rec-created the series.  All the episodes currently appear to be scheduled for recording,  So far anyway - things might go south in a few weeks again.

One last note.  It struck me that you could wind up with a messed up series recording which would be impossible to delete given you need a scheduled recording from which to cancel a series.  Stumbling around these forums I found https://communityforums.rogers.com/t5/Ignite-TV/How-to-Cancel-Scheduled-Recordings-on-Ignite-TV/ta-p...  which explains how using the Series Priority dialogue.  Kudos to RogersTony and RogersTim.

If you have any insights on skipped recordings, please reply to this post.

I'm an advisor

I don't have IgniteTV, but using the Guide to set a Series recording for one specific channel is the most reliable way to record content from just one channel.

Sure, you can get fancy and use the Series search techniques, but that can lead to some inconsistencies and oddities that would just most likely get me frustrated.

And because the programmers of the Xfinity/IgniteTV system never had a chance to go back and improve things, you can unfortunately only do the channel-specific Series recording from the Guide for just ONE specific channel.

So although I can set a Series recording from my Legacy digital PVR Guide for as many different channels as I want to, IgniteTV only allows ONE guaranteed channel Series choice (if it lets you set more than ONE, those other choices will either fail, or also might start to mess with the accuracy of the scheduled recordings.

However, once you get used to the various bugs and find some workarounds, some people will still prefer IgniteTV over digital legacy TV.

Sincerely,
Grumpy Old Man
