Follow the steps below to avoid unwanted roaming charges while traveling. Important reminder that once you disable roaming on your device, it will prevent all data usage. Please bear in mind that turning data roaming off will not block your device from sending/receiving calls or texts messages, thus you can still incur roaming charges. Rest assured, you will still be able to access Wi-Fi while data roaming is off.

Step One: Turn your data roaming off

Step Two: Make sure the Airplane Mode setting on your phone is turned on

Step Three: Turn your Wi-Fi on. This will allow you to access the internet when a Wi-Fi network is available to you.

Here's how to turn off data roaming on Apple and Android devices:

Apple iOS - iPhone or iPad (iOS9 or newer)

  1. Go to your phone ‘Settings’
  2. Scroll down and select ‘Cellular
  3. Click ‘Cellular Data Options and turn off ‘Data Roaming

      Android OS (5.0 or newer)

  1. Go to your phone ‘Settings
  2. Scroll down and select ‘Connections’
  3. Click ‘Mobile networks’ and turn off ‘Data Roaming

To minimize roaming while traveling:

  1. Disable auto-play videos on social media apps by changing the app settings.

  1. Fully close down your apps when you're not using them.

  1. Limit using location services. Some apps use your current location to help make them more convenient.

  1. Turn off push email notifications so that your device is not constantly looking for emails to download. Manage these notifications in your Push or Sync settings, depending on your device.

  1. Connect to Wi-Fi for activities that use up a lot of data such as streaming videos, downloading apps, or checking maps.

  1. To prevent roaming charges completely when travelling, put your phone on Airplane or Flight mode. If you still want your device available for calls or texts, turn data roaming off.

I'm new here

I bought an e-sim 3GB to use in Italy, and just returned home to find a $15x4=$60 extra charge for the stupid Roam like Home feature which seems to be automatic. Not sure how to permanently disable this, but will contact Rogers. In the meantime, if I disable roaming, won't that also block me from using the esim?

@Drt_Vader : Roam Like Home is not automatic, however, you need to do certain things to either minimize or eliminate these charges.  Here's a post on the topic:
