@Wes_Renovations : I have the following comments.

 

1. If you download Google Maps to the phone and also download "offline" maps to that phone for areas where your father will travel, he can use Google Maps without using Data.  It will not provide real time traffic, however, it will give directions to most places.  If you use Google Maps while connected to WiFi before leaving, it will give you all of the information you get when connected to the Internet.

 

2. Your father should have received a text or some other notification as he was approaching and/or going over his allotted data. 

 

3. Beyond providing notification,  it is not Rogers' responsibility to monitor a user's data usage.  Same goes for Roaming.  It is the user's responsibility to know, and if the user is not capable, then the phone plan should be structured for someone not capable and/or you need to monitor so that things don't get out of hand.   

 

4. Rogers did accept partial responsibility even though they didn't have to.

 

5. Since you have 6 cell phone plans, you are already aware of all this.

 

6. Sorry about your predicament.

 

7. Do you think other providers would be different?

I also just found out that the box that Rogers replaced wasn’t even for his internet. It was for his cable. The tech asked my dad for his wifi password and my dad didn’t know it so the tech changed the password. Does this shift who you believe to be at fault. Why is the tech changing his password to replace a cable box?

I would need more information before responding. Is your father now on IgniteTV or still Legacy Digital Cable?  If the former, then the new "box" is called a Gateway and handles TV, Internet (and Home Phone if applicable).  The "cable box" with IgniteTV is connected to the Gateway either via Ethernet or WiFi. It's a totally different configuration from Legacy Digital Cable. Any computers or other devices like phones or tablets would connect to the Gateway via WiFi (or perhaps Ethernet, if its a computer) Setting up the Gateway requires a password and if your father doesn't know it, then the tech did the right thing to get things working in the home.  I assume your father was provided with the password so that any items connected could be appropriately configured.

 

It would have been a good idea for you to follow up at your father's home to see what was done, etc.  My brother and I did the same with my father when he was in his 90's as the scammers were attempting to take all his money. We made sure that we were involved with any institutions like banks and providers so that nothing bad could happen.

 

P.S.  I'm in my early 70s.
