How long is cell number saved for after cancelling service?

I’ve read on here that if I cancel my cell plan, and then I decide to take out another plan with Rogers within 60 days, my number will still be available. Is that correct?

Not from my understanding. If you cancel your cellular service with Rogers and don't port that number out. That number can be immediately available to assign to another customer. Ultimately, it depends on the area code and how in demand those numbers are. There is no guarantee you will be able to get the same number back after cancelling.

@chrisandison When a voice service gets cancelled, Rogers will not re-issue the phone number immediately.  That is to prevent customers from losing that number if their service gets cancelled accidentally or in error.  However, as far as I know, Rogers will not "park" that number for you, and there any guarantee that you will ever be able to get your number back when you resubscribe.

If you want to cancel your phone service but keep your number indefinitely, you will need to port it out to some other phone service.  You can sign up for a VoIP phone service for as little as a few dollars per month.  There are also services out there that will park your phone number until you are ready to use it again.

I don't want to keep the number "indefinitely".  But I had understood that Rogers doesn't release it right away and read on this forum somewhere that they hold it for 60 days before releasing it.  I was just wondering whether 60 days is correct.

@chrisandison : There is no guarantee that you can get the number back if you cancel with Rogers. In most cases a number is not used again for about 6 months, however, as mentioned by others, this cannot be guaranteed and depends on the need in a particular location for numbers.  If you do cancel with Rogers, then you need to consider the number gone unless you're lucky enough to get it back.  If you wish to "keep" the number, then you need to port it to a different provider by contacting that provider and asking for a Port. If you contact Rogers and tell them you are cancelling or porting, you may lose the number period
