Conflict of info from Rogers - SIM & Data Transfer

I am swapping my S8 for S24+ which I ordered via phone with a rep.

I opted for the finance because its way cheaper if you lock in for 2 years on the plan.

 

I asked this question with Rogers centre via phone:

-Is the SIM Card tied to the phone?, because I want to transfer the data from one phone to the other at my leisure, when I am done I want to remove the SIM card and install it in the new phone with now worries.

Their answer was "you cannot swap the SIM card as it needs to be changed at the store, and that the Rogers store will transfer the files for me.

 

I asked the same question with Rogers Store where I will pick it up (FYI locked door policy has ended):

The answer was "You can put the SIM card in any device and it will work without issue, as for the transfer of files they cannot do it because I purchased from the Rogers centre via phone and not with the store, and that I saved the $70.00 doing it that way because "I am doing it myself".

The rep on at the centre did say I was saving $70.00 but was not too clear why.

 

It's the reversed answer!

Where is the closest brick wall?

What says the pro's?

 

It does make sense on the Transfer issue, but the SIM card question is the biggie.

Google has a way to transfer files from your old android to your new one

Even though Samsung is a google android phone, samsung likes to make versions of software for their own apps, so if your going from OLD Samsung Android to NEW Samsung Android, you can transfer your files from old device to new, you can even do it wirelessly via bluetooth or via a transfer cable if both phones use usb-c

 

Either way, not sure why people transfer apps? when you sign into the google account on your NEW android phone, you can download all your apps from the play store, it remembers which apps you purchased or downloaded.   plus you are getting the latest versions of the apps,

The SIM is not tied to the device, so putting it in your new devices will work fine. If you haven't had a new S card I'm the past few years though. You might want to consider getting a new one so your device has all of the latest SIM capabilities for your new device.

You definitely do not want to transfer your data over fr the old device. You will cause issues with apps and settings being from very old versions of Android on a new device. If you want your pictures and texts. Back the up manually but using SmartSwitch is going to cause you enough headaches that you will want to factory reset and set it up all over again without any backup.

As long as the previous device is not too old, it's very simple to transfer what's on the old phone to the new one - see below:

I assume you have android. If you have apple, it's also very easy.  Just put the phones side-by-side and the new phone will "fetch" what it can from the old one upon startup.

no user data is ever stored on the sim, the sim card is just what ties your phone number to your device, you are free to swap it from old device to new device, however if your old sim is very old and not a nano sim, you my need to swap it, yes swap it, do NOT try to cut it down to shape under any circumstance

I'm curious, how does financing end up being cheaper? Bringing your own device (BYOD) has typically been more affordable, especially when you consider the additional fees involved with financing. It's a good idea to have someone else double-check your numbers, assuming they have all the facts.

Thanks all, great answers.

I have used Kies & Smart Switch in the past and have had some issues like with email etc but I agree with LordDrakkon above, install from scratch and why I want to do this at my leisure. 

 

@ Hmm

When you sign on for the 2 year plan you end up paying (for S24+) about $960.00 over the 24 months and then the phone is all yours.

Example: that $960.00 vs $1560.00 from Samsung, or $1730.00 from Rogers for those whom do not want to commit the plan.

I specifically asked the people on the phone if they still lock their store doors and their answer was they stopped locking their doors about a year ago...false! still a locked policy.

could be a third party store that still has the locked door.  rogers has no authority to tell a third party store how to operate their stores and to lock their doors or not. THey have control only of certain other aspects related to the products being sold.

 

if it is indeed a rogers corp store still locking their doors, you can always find the contact of the Area or District manager and take your time and type a neatly worded letter to him or her or they or them.

Financing isn't. But "leasing" somewhat (where there's an additional discount you don't have to repay if you upgrade your phone at the end of your 24 months agreement and it's in good shape).
However, plans are usually more expensive than BYOD, so you really have to do the maths before getting a new device).
