Disabling Rogers Pop Up Adds and Power Saving feature

My wife has Dementia and lives in a Long Term Care Home. She cannot communicate or use her hands to control the TV remote. After so many hours, Rogers has pop up adds that cannot be removed, and or a question "are you still watching" Of course she is still watching. That is all she can do all day. However, she cannot respond with the remote. I currently pay someone to visit 3 times a day to either change the channel, or turn the tv off and then on again just so that she can watch the TV. Rogers Technical support says nothing they can do. There is always something that they can do, but Rogers will not address this issue.

I don't buy this argument. A screen saver is not saving energy. If they wanted to save energy they would disable the signal to the TV instead of using it for Rogers Advertising.

You would need a device that can control the box. I have a home automation system called Control4 that has drivers for the IgniteTV boxes that can control the boxes using IP control.  So I can use a scheduled event to send the command.  But the IgniteTV API (actually it is the Xfinity API) is not published so this is not an option for others unless someone reverse engineers it.

One other option that I can think of is to use an IR blaster to send the command every few hours.  You can get IR blasters for PCs - so you would need to learn the code.  The IgniteTV boxes can be controlled by IR but the remotes don't use IR by default. But you would need a PC in the same room as the IgniteTV box.  Or at least use a USB over ethernet extender.

Not easy to do unless you are a geek.

The command that I would send would be "enter", the centre button in the remote. This brings up the progress in a recording and "info" in a watched programme. The popup self-removes after a few seconds.

And this command, or there may be some other keys that would work, would have to be entered at least once every 3 hours and 55 minutes.  That's when the "Stay Awake" popup comes up.

That is exactly what I need to do… I am making a trip into my mom‘s long-term care home or making arrangements (as staff is understandably busy), to have someone change it… Not to sound confrontational, but this is really becoming a special needs rights issue.
