Moving to Chatr

fiona59
I plan to stick around

Well, the day has come and Rogers has admitted we are no longer wanted.

My use is less than $6/month, so Chatr is my best option.   I have been on hold waiting to talk with a rep for 68 minutes at this point.

Has anyone managed to talk with one?

@mjbad2 -- check out some of the resellers, e.g., Dollarama or 7-Eleven, for pay-as-you-go plans -- under $10/month. Also, Freedom Mobile has "full" plans starting at $35/month -- definitely less than $55 or $65.

A family member recently switched from Bell prepaid to Fizz and has been absolutely thrilled with the service.  I have been a Virgin and Fido customer in the past and was always annoyed by limitations, like only being able to store 3 voicemail messages, and having those messages disappear after a few days, etc.  Was surprised that Fizz was WAY cheaper and had no such limitations, and offers a ton of flexibility.

I'm happy with my Rogers 5G BYOD plan and service, but it's still expensive.  I only use a few gigabytes of mobile data (at most) per month.  Do I really need a plan that gives me 100GB?  Rogers is STILL constantly trying to upsell me to plans with even more data.

A big limitation of prepaid plans is that you only get so much data, and it really cuts down on your ability to use smartphones to their full potential when you constantly fear incurring overage fees.  If you don't care about download speeds, those low-cost postpaid plans, that for $20/month give you a few gigabytes of data and often unlimited texting and Canada-wide minutes, are a HUGE game-changer.

Hi sadchel,

Is there a reason you bought the Chatr SIM card yourself? I thought the migration team is supposed to handle everything, including just migrating over your number? Did you perhaps wing this, and not go through any of the migration offers??

Hi MJ,

Can you clarify whether you are with Fido Monthly plan (or, Fido Prepaid)? The migration offers (only for existing Fido/Rogers Prepaid customers) are much lower than 55$/month.. 🙂

I was under the impression that a new sim card was required to transfer over to Chatr,

So I went to  a Chatr booth and got a new card and signed up for a Chatr prepaid plan.  And i got 2 months free upon activation.  It was pretty seamless and easy

Hi!

You're right, a new sim card is required even to migrate between carriers from the same parent company (Rogers -> Fido/Chatr, Bell -> Virgin/Lucky, Telus -> Koodo/Public, Videotron -> Fizz).

People can choose to move to Chatter themself, or go thru the special "migration process",  both will achieve the same results, your number gets switched to chatter, and your service continues with the new company, the only difference is the "migration process" might offer special plans that are not normally available to regular chatter customers because they know people are coming from Rogers/Fido and dont make calls so they are losing a hundred dollars of unused airtime, so because of this they give them a special plan to make up for them losing their hundred dollar balance they never use.

Thank you, Pauly,

However, if one switches to Chatr via the migration team by phone, wouldn't they have to wait for a SIM card to arrive by mail? Do they remain on Rogers Pay as You Go until the new SIM arrives?

Or, does the migration team just switch them 'same day' to Chatr, and they continue with their previous (Rogers) SIM card? This is what I'd like to know 🙂

Hello User7594,

Even though Chatr is owned by Roger's, Chatr uses its a Different SIM card than Rogers.  Because of this, you will need a Chatr SIM Card to become a Chatr member.  Because of the ongoing Postal strike, you are best to ask Chatr agents directly what to do if you need to obtain a Chatr sim card. I am thinking you can just go into a Chatr store and purchase one but please double check to be safe, maybe they can courier you one somehow using a different postal carrier?

What mobile-phone do you have? Does it support "e-SIM" technology?

If so, you just enter the code for a SIM card (if your new provider offers e-SIM support) into your phone, and configure your device to use the e-SIM, instead of the physical SIM card.

Appreciate the responses, Pauly and MDK!

I am still wondering, however, what happens when you opt (via the migration team's offer) to go to Chatr, and, you don't live anywhere near a Chatr outlet? What I mean is, if you accept Rogers' offer to migrate to Chatr, do they make the Client run around in search of a SIM and handling all the activation/steps at that point? Or, do they propose something different?

Under normal circumstances, if Fido/Rogers Prepaid wasn't not ending, and you opted to head over to Chatr, yes, you'd handle it yourself. My curiosity is whether under these circumstances, Rogers handles the transfer to Chatr?

Also, as Chatr remains true Prepaid (the service will not function for roaming outside Canada, whereas Fido & Rogers Postpaid plans, even the 5$ & 10$ migration plans, will), am believing migration to Postpaid is the better of the two options. 😀

Chatr functions just fine internationally.  If you go to the Chatr website (Edit - sample link below for one of their plans) you will see that and the charges associated with international travel.  You will need to have money in the prepaid account to cover any pay-per-use charges.

Some people (and the website) say it may not work in the US, however, I was able to connect to AT&T the last time I was in Buffalo, so the US issue may be incorrect because it references 3G.  I believe Chatr uses 4G, so the 3G issue may be moot, assuming you have a phone capable of 4G, which most recent phones have.

As you can see, the pay-per-use rates can be fairly high, but if you use your phone sparingly, then you should be fine.  If you wish to use your phone more than that (or if roaming doesn't work), get a SIM for the country/countries you are visiting.

AFAIK, the migration team does not provide any special deals when switching to Chatr, so you can proceed on your own.

PS. I just remembered that when I got to the US I got a text from Chatr advising me that I was roaming and even gave me the rates for calls, texts & data for the US (and for Puerto Rico).  Rogers Prepaid never gave the rates, they just advised you were roaming...

That's incredible, thanks for the link! I recall at one point, Chatr did not seem to offer coverage/service/roaming, once abroad. That's great. Also, their pay-per-use US rates are so much less expensive than Rogers/Fido pay-per-use roaming. WOW.

Hang on: is it possible the link you sent is valid only of one has their special, CAN/US 50GB plan? Is it possible all other Chatr plans do not include access to outside-Canada roaming..?

**Edit: I looked over all of their by-the-month + yearly plans, and all propose the same US roaming rates. So, can disregard my post above. Great news, so thanks again!

If you review the Chatr website plans, you will see that other plans also have roaming.  I have the $149/year plan.  If you click on the plan details, then click Rate finder link at the bottom, you then get the rates.  See link below for my plan.

Yes, you would have to "run around" obtain a SIM card (or an e-SIM code) from the nearest CHATR store-front. Maybe, some stores (Walmart? BestBuy?) have CHATR's SIM-cards.

Note that "activation" includes "porting" of your telephone-number away from your current provider, into CHATR.  So, after you activate, your current SIM card is useless, and you cannot send/receive calls/texts.

If transferring to CHATR is so complex, pick another provider: 7-Eleven, Dollarama, Staples, Walmart, PetroCanada, et cetera, that can "instantly" migrate your service.

Where the heck do you live that there are No Chatr stores near you?   Even though I have 2 official Chatr stores near me, there are a good 6 to 8 other retail and cellular stores close to me that are not run by Chatr but do sell Chatr services including sim cards.

I suspect you would have to call Chatr and find out if a retailer near you does sell chatr services, or if not, maybe find out their official stance on if they can use an alternate courier besides Canada Post to ship sim cards to those who are in the rare situation where they do not live near a Chatr store?

You likely won't find the answer here because this is form is Rogers community forums.

Hi@MDK-2024 @User7594!

Even simpler than that: If your phone supports eSIM, you can activate it yourself online. If it doesn't and you don't have a standalone Chatr store nearby, you can go to a Fido store! Also, you can always check here to search and see a list of Chatr stores or retail partners in your area.

Hope it helps!
