Long Distance Issue when Porting a Phone

My IGNITE self-install was schedule for a Wednesday, and the tech arrived with the equipment in the morning.

I took my time installing, had lunch, did not complete the phone change-over until 1 or 2 pm.

But in the meantime, I made a Long Distance call on my old provider.

I naively expected that my original LD plan would remain in effect until the moment of changeover.

Apparently BELL begs to differ, and they charged me the full LD "usage" rate for that one call...

I am not sure that I want to bother fighting for the $6... but it could be a factor for people that do a lot of LD calling in that period before switch-over..

That seems like sour grapes from Bell. I just ported my number to Rogers and they gave me a target date but did not actually port until the following day. My agreement with the old provider was that my account would be terminated when the number was ported. The contact was prepaid to the middle of next month, and I do not expect a partial month refund.

Lets say that the official end of phone contract with Bell was the 26 (you likely did not agree to a specific date), and they left the line active until the 27th. That would have been good will and a bonus from them. Now if you made the long distance call on the 27 while the number had not yet been ported then they may have a case.

Is bell giving you a credit for partial month (port date to end of billing period)? If not then your long distance call should be covered by those charges.

The way my port went was all through Rogers... I never talked to Bell at all.

When I agreed to the deal, we set a DATE for the "self-install" and an appointment time (2 hour window).  The appointment was for delivery of the equipment.   As far as I thought, that was all it was for.  It was my naïve impression that I actually had 30 days to do the install, and the port would not take effect until I called them to say "I have internet" as per their installation instructions.  (I don't recall anybody saying 30 days  explicitly, I  though I read it somewhere on Rogers site).

The tech delivering just gave me a number to contact him when I was ready for the phone switch.  And the Rogers phone was active within seconds of my call.   My LD call was on the same date, but before I had installed, and thus before I called Rogers to say "I'm ready"

I did check with Bell about the charge.  THEY said that all the "services" are the first thing to be removed when you cancel service.  Since it was cancelled on that DATE, it appears that they do not look at the TIME.  In their view, all my services, including the LD plan, was not in effect on that date  although the phone was still active until the minute of switchover.

And YES, they did prorate a refund for the remainder of the month... and I did get the credit for it.  Just that I felt it should be $6 more, but its not worth the trouble.   My first Bell contact says I'm not going to get it.
