Hello Community!
Did you know that October is Cyber Security Awareness Month?
It is an internationally recognized campaign held each October to raise awareness about the importance of cyber security. This campaign helps Canadians stay secure online by teaching simple steps to protect themselves and their devices.
We would like to share some best practices for avoiding computer viruses, hacking, malware and other cyberthreats.
- Think before you click. Do not click on suspicious links or attachments from unfamiliar or suspicious email addresses. This is one of the most common ways computers and devices are infected with malware.
- Change your passwords on a regular basis. Passwords should be a minimum of 8 characters. Use a passphrase instead of a word. When updating passwords, do not make minor alterations to an existing one. Change it completely. You can find tips for creating a strong password here.
- Keep your devices up to date with the latest security upgrades. Use anti-virus software which can complement Advanced Security. This software is downloaded to your device to help protect against known viruses. It’s important to keep your anti-virus software up to date.
- Avoid websites / downloading freeware and torrents. You can also check sites like VirusTotal for risk scores before visiting websites you’re unsure of.
- Help protect your home WiFi network. Rogers Ignite Internet and bundle customers with the Ignite WiFi Gateway modem can take advantage of Advanced Security for cyberthreat protection – Learn more about Advanced Security here and download the Ignite WiFi Hub app here.
