False Collection from Rogers on my Credit

ubaidkhan
I've been around

Hi , I just joined the forum and am not sure who can help me, I would appreciate it if you could.

I'm not a Rogers client I used to be a while back and now with Fido, I just found out there is a collection on my credit from Rogers from 2020 even though I was not with Rogers since 2015 and moved to Fido, Seems like they made an error or someone scammed something on my name , not sure but I tried calling them and they can't find anything and I called collection company they no longer with rogers. I'm stuck on where to go and who can clean up the mess and mistakes they made I never had an account with Rogers in those years they report on credit and bad debt .

so there are over $1500 Bad collections on my credit from Rogers which I never had .. What should I do and who I contact, Customer support I called 2 3 times and they can't find anything.

The collection company doesn't work for Rogers anymore and the account isn't under my name and seems like someone used my SIN to report or could be Rogers's emp who used my info to Scam something.

Thank you and I will appreciate

I'm an advisor

Welcome to the forums.

Let me start off by saying that once you click into this thread you started, you'll notice that if you scroll down the page, you will see the heading: You might also like. Those links are for related threads that can help answer some of your questions. You can also use the Search bar at the top of this page, and type various things that will then lead you to even more related threads.

However, since you are most likely stressed and angry right now, I doubt that you have the energy to do a lot of reading. So I will therefore try to make a few assumptions, and then make some suggestions that will help get you started.

Keep in mind that I am not an expert, and other people might post later on with better suggestions.

1) Just because your Credit Card mentions Rogers by name, since Rogers owns Fido, that charge could have come from a Fido scammer.

So since you are not a current Rogers subscriber, you should probably call Fido, and ask Customer care for the Credit Dept. to see if they can see the charges. Otherwise, you can call Rogers Credit dept (the direct number was mentioned in one of the related threads (I think the 2nd one) about collections near the bottom of this page.

2) Rogers and Fido also have Fraud departments that can call you back, but they don't always call back, and might just recommend that you call your Credit Card company, Equifax and TransUnion (google them for the phone numbers).

3) Assuming that you are indeed a victim of identity theft, calling Equifax and TransUnion would be your most important calls. They can put alerts on your account, so that further identity theft and fraud, although still l possible, is at least less likely, or more manageable.

4) You might be lucky and only end up with that $1500 charge to deal with, once you call your Credit Card company to inform them of the fraud. I suppose they would cancel your current card, and then send you another one. Once that's done, and Equifax and TransUnion are trying to protect you from further identity theft, you should feel a bit better.

5) Don't try to call any collection company, until perhaps you get further help and advice from your CC company, Equifax and TransUnion.

6) Since it's been about 3 years since your 2020 $1500 charge, you don't really have to pay it, unless perhaps you have a Rogers/Fido CC because you owe Rogers or Fido money, so I assume they would take you to court and get the money. After year 7, I believe your debt gets wiped out. In some cases, if you pay that $1500, you may end up with an even worse credit rating. But if you don't pay it, I assume the interest keeps rising, unless the collection agency has already given up and sold the debt to another company.

7) I assume you are receiving no calls from any collection agency because your name isn't on the collection agency account, nor is your phone number. If you call the collection agency and give them your name, those 3 years of grace will disappear, and you would have to wait a full 7 years until the debt is wiped away.

Note: Sorry that you had to spend the time reading my long post during this stressful time. Good luck!

Disclaimer: I am NOT a lawyer, but I used to read a lot, so I often mistakenly think that I know what I'm talking about.

Speak to a real lawyer if you can't get help in getting that $1500 charge removed (that somebody else scammed you for).

I plan to stick around

Hi there,

I feel your pain.

DO NOT contact the credit collection company. The debt does not get wiped after 7 years; however, Ontario has a 2-year statute of limitations for them to take legal action against you. Once you acknowledge the debt the 2-year counter starts over and you risk legal action against you. Acknowledgment can be as little as confirming your identity or having a Rogers account. They may contact your family or workplace too if they can. I recommend you tell your family and/or employer about what is going on and ask them to not acknowledge your "existence/workplace". I get speaking to your family/employer may be embarrassing regardless if the debt is yours, but you must.

I recommend you get your full credit report and consumer disclosure statements from TransUnion and Equifax. Both offer free trials so take advantage of them. Take screen shots of every piece of information on both sites because it may be different. Look at your public inquiries and accounts; details like the date the account was opened, reported to the credit bureau, and amount. Dispute any wrong information with Equifax/TransUnion.

Instead, switch providers and keep at them to do better.
