My Rogers/Yahoo Email Account HACKED yesterday....Rogers Tech NO HELP!!!!!!!

TigerBear

Don't know if I'm doing this right BUT....yesterday my Rogers email account was hacked....the scammers cleaned out my Contacts...about 25, my Sent file...about 35,000 over past 7 years, and my Archive...about 135 files.........Now emails are being sent out in my name asking for gift cards for sick/cancer/cover friend/niece, etc.  I've gotten phone calls from people asking if I'm alright because of the weird requests, etc.  I feel NAKED.....can't get a tech guy here.  Everyone on vacation.  I have changed the password on my account.   NO emails are being received in the Inbox, but some have gone into my Archive file.  Don't know what to do.  Called Rogers yesterday....was on hold, waiting for someone for over an hour and hung up in disgust.  How/where do I get help.

As a personal choice I stopped using the isp provided email, more than 20 years ago.  I use hotmail which is now just called outlook.   i also use a paid email client like microsoft outlook, I do constant routine data backups of my PST file and keep an offline copy for legal and administrative purposes.

No one showed or explained to me how to do this, I just learned that I need to do it after getting hacked some 20+ years ago and losing my emails once, it caused me to think and study how to do this and create a plan.

Hello, everyone........thank you all for your kind replies.  Got an email from the forum asking if I had found a solution to the hacking of my email account, and the answer is:  Yes and No.  I have changed the password on my Rogers email account, and seem to be receiving emails to it from two of my friends, and several others.  On Dec. 31, I got a reply from Sunwing customer service responding to the scammer/hacker's original email of Dec. 28.  I haven't used Sunwing in about 10-15 years, so you can see how far it all went.  They asked how they could help me.  I did not respond in case that email was somehow still linked to the scammer/hacker.  I got a phone call this morning from a neighbour, thanking me for 'the very nice email' I had sent her a few days ago, only I had NOT sent her an email a few days ago; last time I wrote her was about six months ago when another neighbour had died.  So, the fallout is still to come, and I will be continually reminded of ALL of the people and businesses who have been affected by this hack/scam.  I just fervently hope that noone fell for it and bought any gift cards and followed whatever instructions the scammer/hacker sent them.  Nothing I can do about that.

AND...what REALLY still sticks in my craw and bugs me no end and makes me fervently wish I had an alternative to using Rogers is the lack of response I got on Dec. 28th, when I called in around 7pm to report the hack to the Internet Tech line.  Got a nice young woman, from Calgary, Alberta, who did not know what to do/how to address my problem.  We spoke back and forth for about 15 minutes, and then she said, guess I better got up a notch to the fraud section (or something like that), then said....we will just have to wait, they are backed up.  So...she and I waited on the open phone line for an additional 45 minutes, with nothing being said or being done.  After about an hour of the call, she said to me.."perhaps I will start looking for a solution myself, seems there are 11 callers ahead of me/us, so it's a long wait.  It is dinner time, so it's busy."  It was coming onto 8pm by this time.  Then she said, perhaps you can find help from a friend or someone there who might know what to do, and as she spoke, I just saw red, and said:  that's enough, thank you.  and I hung up.  That was the totality of Rogers' support.

I have tried to open up a new Yahoo account (not Rogers connected), but I CANNOT because I don't have a mobile number to put into my registration form, where they will send an SMS (whatever that is) code to me to authenticate the registration.  So gave up on that.  And PLEASE, nobody on this site, do NOT reply back that YES YOU CAN get a new email address WITHOUT a mobile phone.  NOT true.  I have also watched, previously, Youtube videos of someone going through the whole thing about registering without a cellphone, and it's garbage.  Just cannot be done, as some of the comments under the video attest to.

What I could really use back is 1) My Contacts, so that I can send them an email about this hack; and 2) My Archive folder, which contained 135 emails, mostly of online receipts for charitable donations during 2023.

Also, I'd like the people in the restore/recovery department to do a better job, and restore to me at least my SENT emails for 2023, rather than send me off a bunch (4,800, to be exact) of useless emails from 2006 (when I first joined Rogers) to 2008.  Seriously...what the heck was the point of that?

I'm old, but I think I still have most of my marbles and common sense, and I just don't understand and can't accept such bad customer service.

BTW....if anyone on here, expert or not, has something helpful to reply to, please go ahead.  I'll keep an open mind.  🙂  Thanks again.  It was helpful to get some of my frustration out. Seriously...77 and being censored.  What a world.

@TigerBear : Have you tried Gmail?  I didn't need a phone to sign in there, but that was 5 years ago.  Good Luck.

Hi...thanks for suggestion.  YES I did try Gmail.  Actually had signed up three years ago for a gmail account when no mobile number was needed, and used an alias in the address, and I use it mainly only for reading stuff in FB.  Now went in to set up another gmail account, and could NOT without a mobile number.  So...things have changed.  Guess all systems are trying to tighten up, with MFA, etc.  Another issue.  EVERY time I sign into my Rogers account, a note flashed on the screen between the email signin and password screen, telling me to go to some other place to ADD a mobile number for MFA.  Luckily now, I can just delete that screen and continue on in the sign in, but the day may come when it won't be allowed without MFA...then I'll have to give up email access.  More isolating for seniors.

Try reaching out to yahoo one more time and filling in the form.  its possible the person who received the request used the wrong date range, so try again, what's the worst thing that can happen? they mess up again? they could very will try once more and might get it right this time.

Hi, thanks for thought....In fact, I've sent in two other 'reports' on their form.  There isn't any place to put in data ranges, etc.  And what I got back was an acknowledgement of receipt of the form, but with the incident number of the first original report I made.  There is no place to really expand much.  I had thought of calling Rogers to see if I could find a knowledgeable person who might be willing to go the extra mile.  Have to do something SOON because the thief of files happened Dec. 28, so window is closing for restoring 'lost/stolen' files.  Don't know if it's worth the aggravation of waiting on hold for an hour.  Thanks again.

This is another long shot but try the yahoo online chat, Yahoo is actually  your email provider, but the email was created and handled thru rogers due to an agreement,  however yahoo should have the power to fully manage all the accounts on their server even thru venders like rogers or other internet companies

try the yahoo online chat and see if  they can help you, if your lucky to find a phone number of yahoo or their parent company, you can try calling too and see where it gets you

In all honesty, I know its a terrible time to contact rogers right now, they're super busy every time on the christmas holidays, you can try their live chat, but if all else fails, i did suggest to step around the problem and try to deal with yahoo directly so hope this helps

Thanks.  Reaching out to Yahoo sounds like a more useful resource than using Rogers support.  I will try and find specific contact info for Yahoo.  Much appreciate your replies.

Any time seems like a terrible time to contact Rogers, for anything.  But they never miss sending out bills. 🙂
