Rogers Wi-Fi Calling Whilst Outside Canada -> Roaming Charges, Why?

MichaelYYZ
I plan to stick around

Historically, unlike Bell and Telus, Rogers was not charging roaming fees when using Wi-Fi Calling outside of Canada. But things have changed, apparently.

Now, both Bell and Telus do not provide Wi-Fi Calling services outside of Canada. Perhaps billing for roaming on Wi-Fi Calling was challenging (or challenged!) and now, instead of providing the service for free, they decided to provide it not at all (and charge roaming the old-fashion way).

Rogers, instead, have not only made things confusing, but also unfair. In an nutshell, if a user is using Wi-Fi Calling outside of Canada:

  • The user will not pay for roaming if calling a Canadian number;
  • The user will be charged roaming fees if calling a non-Canadian number.

This does not make sense to me because in either case the user is not connected to the Rogers wireless network, i.e. is roaming. But I find this also abusive because, as long as a user is on Wi-Fi Calling, the user is connected to an Internet provider, at the user's cost, whilst Rogers will not incur additional roaming charges from a partner third-party wireless provider.

For clarity, please note that I am talking about roaming charges, not long-distance charges. The latter are not the subject of this post.

What is going with Rogers? Another attempt to make a free buck on the back of their customers?

Does Rogers' approach make sense? Am I missing anything?

I get that. I understand the system more than most. When I travel to Mexico, my device goes into Airplane Mode and WiFi turned on when I board the plane. My device does not come out of AirPlane Mode until I either am back I'm the US or Canada.

There is no social media apps on my device. You would be amazed what you can remove with an ADB command. To access permissions for system apps, Shizuku and App Ops help a lot in disabling any call for location outside of determining the towers my device connects to when the cellular radio is enabled. There are ways to sandbox apps, including browsers so they have no access to the system or Google Play Services, which also gets sandboxed to prevent apps from sharing and mining data on my device. This is why I would never use an iPhone because similar requires jail breaking where all of this can be accomplished without root on Android.

I too am no stranger to ADB Commands, and have enabled/disabled features.  I have said that I have used WiFi calling in the Carribean in the past, and it worked fine no surprise calls, I was able to call back home (Toronto) and my wife was surprised she thought I would get charged but when I showed her my bill, nada.

what I'm saying is the whole point of Wi-Fi calling is to CONTINUE to use your cellphone when you are in an area in canada with weak or no cell signal, however maybe some elites have figured a way to make calls to their local home calling area from their cellphone when abroad and not get charged as if they left the country, this I can understand why Rogers will tighten up the belt on Wi-Fi calling
