Not receiving sms while abroad

oligarchsvictim
I've been here awhile

I'm currently out of the country, somewhere in Asia.
This is something that I do regularly, like almost every year.

This time around I am not able to get any text into my Rogers number, which I use for verification purposes, like banking services. I really need to be able to do this and I have called Technical Support, they restarted the network or something for me, then the next day I got all the sms I was supposed to get all at once, but then the next day I back to not receiving any.

I need to be able to get the text quite instantly because those verification codes expire within minutes.

Any idea what could I do?

This is more than likely not a Rogers issue. A lot of banks around the world have moved to a system that doesn't allow 2FA codes to be sent outside of the country they are in. This is to prevent fraud! TD is one example of this as well as many other major banks around the world.

If that isn't the issue. A lot of 2FA messages have also moved to RCS and iMessage because it adds a layer of security to the 2FA system where SMS are not encrypted and easy to intercept. RCS and iMessage require a data connection to send and receive messages that are not sent as SMS/MMS. You might want to reach out to your bank to see if they have made any changes to their 2FA system that might explain why you are not rrceiving these messages.

what bank do you bank with?

RBC Royal Bank sends a 2FA via the RBC app instead of via text, so you can receive it as long as you are using cellular or wifi data while abroad

Re: Not receiving sms while abroad

I didn't know about this, but this seems to be the case. I asked a couple of people in Canada to try to send me a text/sms and I got them right away!

Well now I know. I suspected the RCS too and tried even with Data Roaming on but still couldn't get the 2FA codes.

I do bank with RBC.
I am able to log into the internet banking with 2FA via the RBC app.

But when trying to do international wire transfer via the internet banking, 2FA codes via sms seems to be the only option. I don't have an option to do international transfer via RBC app. I talked to RBC earlier and they think it is because I have a business account.

Just as an FYI, I was able to receive an SMS 2FA from TD while in Mexico.  Perhaps certain (other) countries are not eligible.  A lot of Canadians vacation or have business in Mexico, so perhaps Mexico is "allowed".

I did have to turn off Airplane mode to receive the SMS via Telemex cellular network, but cellular data was not required.  I know it is for some messages as mentioned below:

iMessage can be handed via WiFi, even while in Airplane mode on an iDevice like an iPhone or iPad and perhaps even the Messages app on an Apple computer.

(Although TD no longer allows for emails or answers to specific questions that you have input to your account information as 2FA, Royal Bank and EQ Bank still do.  Obviously, this needs to be set up in your account before you leave.  You are then presented with options when 2FA is required.)
