Change of IP address automatically

I've been around

I am living in Brampton and my IP address says Toronto area sometimes. I was wondering why this is happening as well. I was thinking what can be the issue that my IP address changes location. Is this a thing to worry that my system is hacked or something like that?

Geolocation based on IP address can be problematic sometimes.  Third parties maintain databases of where they believe certain IP address ranges have been allocated... and web sites use these geolocation services to provide their visitors with localized content.  However, Rogers is free to re-address their networks however they see fit... so yes, an IP address that was once used in Toronto could now be allocated to customers in Brampton... and it will take some time before these third-party providers discover this and learn where those IP address blocks have been redeployed.

At least sites think that you are only in Toronto.  I live in the GTA and was getting geolocated to Moncton.  Was a real pain accessing some online services that take security seriously.  As far as they knew, some far-away hacker was trying to break into my account and all of their security countermeasures kicked in.

@Arsh_bajaj as long as I've been on this forum, IP Geolocation has been a problem.  When @RogersDave, a network engineer was on staff, he took it upon himself to update the IP locations with some of the Geolocation companies.  After his departure, no one picked up on this and as a result, geolocation with Rogers IP addresses has been hit and miss.  It might produce the correct location and then again ..... it might not be correct.  This includes subscriptions to other Rogers services which rely on geolocation.

Re: Change of IP address automatically

Hey,

So with the new rollout of sportsbooks in Canada they need to verify my location and that I am in Ontario. When I am using my home PC the websites get me to download a location plug-in but they don't think I'm in Ontario. Then I did some digging and found that when I look up my IP location it places me out of province in Quebec. Any idea how I can get that fixed?

Thanks.
