Roam like Home - Unexpected charges

Midscape11
I'm here a lot

My family was travelling overseas for 2 weeks. We turned the Cellular off and also turned Roaming off prior leaving Canada. When we received our latest bill, we noticed each phone was charged for a day or two of roam like home charges $12 per day for the US and $15 per day for International. I am trying to connect with Rogers Customer Service and have been waiting for almost an hour. They also do not work on the Weekend which is extremely difficult to connect with someone who can assist on this query.

Hello @Midscape11,

You are only charged on calendar days you use your device (make/receive a call, send a text, calling your voicemail, use data), please be advised that turning off data roaming isn't always sufficient; it's best to have the phone on airplane mode. Many apps and services running in the background trigger the Roam Like Home charge when you are not actively using your phone to call/text.

I hope this helps!

Thank you RogersZia for your response.

I turned cellular off on all phones and used Wi-fi only for the duration of the trip. When you turn airplane mode on, you cannot use Wi-fi. When you turn cellular on, apps should not use any data. Why would you charge me roaming charges when I am on wifi only. Kindly advise.

Re: Roam like Home - Unexpected charges

Sorry that should have been Cellular off Roaming off - apps should use zero data.

1. When you turn airplane mode on, you cannot use Wi-fi
2. When you turn cellular on, apps should not use any data.

1. I don't believe this is correct.  After you switch to Airplane mode you need to find your phone setting to turn WiFi back on.  I do this all the time on my iPhone SE2020 and before that on my iPhone 5S.  You can have the phone in Airplane mode and utilize WiFi.

2. As soon as your phone connects to a foreign cell tower you may receive charges for roaming.  This can happen due to app updates, location services, incoming texts, etc. There are several ways to avoid roaming:

A) Put your phone in Airplane Mode before leaving Canada.

B) Turn your phone off completely on days when you don't want to roam.

C) Remove the Rogers SIM before leaving Canada.  (If you wish to use your phone for cellular service without roaming charges, you may purchase a foreign SIM or a different phone for the countries you are visiting. These are typically very inexpensive, costing roughly the same as one day of Rogers roaming).

I don't believe you read the clarification item:

Cellular was OFF and Roaming was OFF. How would the phone connect to the Cell Towers when the Cellular was OFF!

I would connect WiFi to the local phone HotSpot so there should be zero roaming charges. The bill clearly shows no data was used and no phone calls were made in the detailed section but I still see Roaming charges.

I also checked with the Apple Store and they informed me to turn Roaming OFF and then turn Cellular OFF to avoid roaming charges.

If what you say is true, then we should have been charged Roaming Charges on all 4 phones and on most days -  not just for 1 day per phone on different days.

Thanks.

1. Although I'm not a cell phone expert, I believe you are misinterpreting what happens when you have "cellular off".  For example, I have this turned off all the time on my iPhone SE2020 since I don't have a data plan, however, I can still make and receive calls, therefore the phone is still connecting to the cell tower.  I believe this has to do with cellular data and other options if you dig deeper into that particular "cellular" menu.

One other way to tell if you're connected to a tower is to look at the top of your cell phone screen to see if there is a provider shown along with signal strength. If there is, you're connected.  You'll  notice that when you switch to Airplane mode, the provider disappears.

2. You need to check with your provider regarding these settings, not Apple.  I have provided the FAQ link in my previous post. and my summary of what you need to do to avoid roaming charges.

3. Each different phone may have received calls or texts at different times, or not at all,  It's not surprising to see different charges on different phones, which may or may not have been set up identically or may or may not have received or sent calls or texts or location information or app updates, at any particular time, etc.

I've been around

I am facing the same thing. And trying to speak to Rogers customer service. They don't have any explanation but they insist i pay these charges

Re: Roam like Home - Unexpected charges

The issue is more than likely either growing list of apps that can turn your data back on and off again without any notification at all to keep their connection. As mentioned, turning off cellular is not enough. That is why Airplane mode needs to be turned on and then you can enable WiFi while Airplane Mode remains enabled. This will not prevent apps like WhatsApp from connecting to data when that WiFi signal gets weak or for whatever reason apps like that need data for a moment.

@PK24 : Check out the following more recent thread on the topic of roaming. Read at least posts 1 and 2, as well as the links in post 2 for additional information:

The following link discusses how to avoid or minimize roaming charges:

There are only a few ways to totally avoid roaming:  Turn the phone off, remove the Rogers SIM, or keep the phone in Airplane mode.
