Changing your passwords regularly can help keep your personal information safe and complement tools such as the Advanced Security feature offered with our new Ignite WiFi Gateways. For example, changing your home WiFi password can help secure your network from outside intrusions, such as people stealing your internet connection, altering your settings, changing your network password, or redirecting your browser to malware or phishing sites.

Below we’ve included tips on choosing passwords, and step-by-step instructions on how to change the password for a few popular modems from Rogers.

Creating a Strong Password

  • Choose a unique, hard-to-guess password (and never reuse one).
  • Don’t use obvious passwords, like your spouse’s name, your pet’s name, or your birthdate, and avoid easy to guess ones like “password” or “123456”.
  • When it comes to passwords, the longer, the better. Choose one at least 12 characters long, with upper- and lowercase letters, as well as numbers and symbols.
  • Make your passwords memorable. Instead of using a random mess of characters you’ll have to keep on your desktop post-it notes, try using a long passphrase or sentence that has meaning to you or makes you giggle, like an inside joke.
  • Use an online tool from Microsoft’s Safety and Security Center to assess the strength of a password.
  • Have a different password for each account/website.
