How can I access my phone from my laptop when the screen is not working?

I'm trying to open my phone on my laptop but since I can't see my phone screen I can't authorize use to open my phone. Any ideas how I can allow access?

What kind of device are you using? May I know what's wrong with the phone screen itself? Is the touch response still working? Have you tried to explore repair options? 

It would definitely help to know the device type as I was able to find a couple of helpful How Tos on the Samsung website and there could be options available for other manufacturers.
