Internet Service Connection at New Home

Tahkalot
I've been here awhile

Dear Rogers Community and Admins,

Urgent Assistance Needed for an Internet Connection - A Family's Plea:

I am reaching out with a request borne out of a family necessity rather than a mere desire for better connectivity. My family and I have been loyal Rogers customers for over 30 years, and our recent move has brought us to a situation that has me asking for your help.

We've recently moved into a lovely home in Bolton-Caledon, where we were delighted to find that Rogers fibre optic lines are present on our street and even on the utility pole in front of our house. However, upon contacting Rogers to set up our connection, we faced a series of confusions regarding our area's serviceability. After multiple conversations, it was confirmed that we are indeed in a Rogers-serviced area. After confirming our neighbors are all connected to Rogers, we were told that this means the house is likely serviceable. We were asked if we could confirm the presence of a Rogers fibre line at the curb. If we could see the line and verify it was Rogers, we could request a quote for connection or speak to the construction team about prioritizing our case, given our circumstances.

Shortly after that, we were informed by Adam B. at Rogers that this was not the case. The fibre line at the curb was only for the other houses, and we would have to run an entirely new line to our home from kilometres away at an estimated cost of $25,670, including engineering (design/construction drawing, permits – Region and Municipality, fees), construction: materials and labour and that it would take at least 6 months till the job can be completed (POs approvals, permits done and approved, locates requests etc.). It is a bit hard to understand how the 4-5 neighbours we have are connected to Rogers on this fibre line but that our one house in a string of houses would require an entirely separate dedicated fibre line different from the one that currently services the neighbourhood. In talking with other reps at Rogers, they had never heard of one house needing a separate fibre line direct from a node. So, we are a bit confused by all of this.

Here's where our urgent need comes in. Our adult daughter is bravely battling cancer, and a reliable internet connection is no longer a luxury but a lifeline for us. She requires a stable and reasonably fast connection for frequent video conferences with her hospital and for working from home. In our current situation, we are struggling to manage her medical consultations and her ability to work effectively without a proper internet connection. We are doing our best to save our money to help her in her fight, trying to find a way to fund this would be impossible given our current situation.

I am reaching out to the Rogers Community in the hope of finding guidance, support, or assistance in expediting our request to connect our home to the Rogers network. Obviously, shame on me for making such assumptions and not checking the service levels before moving my family there. I feel terrible about it. I would genuinely appreciate any help or direction to help me find some solution to get through this. Any advice on the appropriate channels within Rogers to understand if there is a possible solution here would also be immensely appreciated.

Thank you for taking the time to read our story.

Warm regards,

Steve

Hello, @Tahkalot.

We welcome you to our Community and thank you for sharing your family's situation. We sincerely appreciate your long-standing loyalty, and it's disheartening to hear about the challenges you've encountered while trying to set up your internet connection in your new home. Our thoughts are with your daughter as she bravely battles cancer. We understand the critical importance of a stable and reliable internet connection for her medical consultations and work from home needs.

Your new home not being currently serviceable indicates it's off-plant, and new construction is required to extend the services to your property. Because of the various moving parts, permissions, contracting, etc., it may take a while before service can be provided. Thank you for connecting with us and getting the estimates.

Meanwhile, please explore Rogers 5G Home Internet, which can be used for video conferencing and working from home.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Regards,

RogersMoin

Hi RogersMoin,

Thanks for your reply; it is very much appreciated and very kind of you.

We did attempt to use Rogers 5G, but both Rogers and a competitor said the local area is "at capacity," and thus, service could not be provided.

There is a Roger's fibre line on the property and despite being told numerous times that we were not in a Rogers service area by Rogers and being redirected by other vendors to contact Rogers, we received notice in the mail that the address was slated to be connected to Rogers fibre. The notice included the consent form and the name of the construction company. I realize it can be a lengthy process to run the conduit and make the connection, I am more hopeful someone might have some advice as to how we might be able to help make this process easier and faster for all. Would it make sense to have someone run the conduit and get the appropriate permissions to dig? Does it make sense to contact the construction company charged with that area?

It has been a rough month, but there is hope for a solution in the not-too-distant future!

It would be nice to be the Dad who can deliver some good news after putting us in this bad situation.

@Tahkalot  If I were you, I would try calling the toll-free number in the Rogers FTTH FAQ to see if they have any work scheduled on your property.  There are a number of pieces that need to fall into place before a new FTTH Internet service can be installed in your home and activated, and any efforts on your part, however well intentioned, to speed the process up could actually slow things down.  I think the best that you can hope for is to get your installation prioritized, and see if you can get even an approximate date as to when your service might get activated.
