Bringing my active XiOne-sc box to a friends house who has Roger TV already using Xi6-A -will it work

Gc21
I've been around

I currently have active XiOne-sc box, I will be moving in with friends for an extended period of time and I want to know if I bring my box to their house and plug it in will it work. They currently are using the  Xi6-A.

Or do I need add it to their account for it to work? We are in the same party of the city if that makes any difference.

This is a bit of a grey area.  Rogers will almost certainly tell you that you are not allowed to do this.  The rational being that they don't want neighbours "sharing" a TV service, with one neighbour subscribing to TV + Internet with 6 set-top boxes, the other neighbour subscribing to Internet only and running 3 of those set-top boxes there.  If you own a Home and Cottage, they don't even want to you bring any of your set-top boxes up to the cottage; they want you to subscribe to Xfinity TV at your cottage as well.

From a technical perspective, I'm pretty sure that the set-top box will work outside your home.  If your set-top box connects to any network other than your own in-home network, you probably will not be able to watch some of your channels, just like you cannot watch certain channels outside your home with the mobile app.

That said, you may run into other problems.  If you take your set-top box to a friend's house, the set-top box will periodically try to contact the LnF service on any nearby Xfinity Gateway.  When it does that, it will be able to retrieve the Wi-Fi credentials that you have configured in your own Gateway back home and then try to reconnect to that network, so you may find the set-top box constantly dropping off of Wi-Fi outside your home.  Technically, Rogers will also be able to know that you have an Xfinity set-top box being used outside your home.  I don't know how upset they will be or what (if any) actions they will take against you.

What IS okay is you watching TV outside your home using a computer or the Xfinity Stream mobile app.
