Text Message Billing Scam

JohnnySP
I've been around

I just got a text message, the first clue as to it being a scam is that I can't open the message at home via Wi-Fi, I have to turn on my data plan. When I opened the message, only 1/4 of Rogers's round red icon is visible followed by a copy & pasted image of 'Rogers' in red, however just ROGE and half an R is displayed.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________

The message is: ALERT ROGERS BILLING DEPARTMENT Dear (my cell phone number is displayed). This is a reminder that your bill with Roger Mobility remains unpaid . To avoid service disruption, please ensure payment is made by September 23, 2024. If we do not receive payment by this date, your account may incur late fees, and your service could be suspended.

Please make the payment at rogers-mobility1account.com

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

OK - first, the phone that sent this message was +12896735782

Second, I've yet to been able to forward scam text messages to 7726. I don't know if the scammers have done something to prevent this but every time I've attempted to forward suspicious text messages to 7726, it fails to be sent?

Third, there's no such thing as  Roger Mobility (in text message), it's Rogers Wireless.

Fourth, just sign- in to your 'MyRogers Account' to check payment history and any outstanding bills yet to be paid.

Lastly, NEVER and I MEAN NEVER click on a link from a text message. If you need to really follow up on something from any business you regularly deal with (bank, utility company, 407 highway tolls, etc.) always go to their website and login into your account and/or make a phone to customer service / billing department.

Hello @JohnnySP ,

A warm welcome and thanks a lot for posting about this incident. 🙂

You are absolutely correct, we always advise our customers not to ever click on any unverified links when receiving a suspicious email or text. It's always a great idea to go directly to the source via a verified avenue of support, to confirm if the info received is legitimate.

Just to clarify, we would never send a text message communication from a regular phone number, it would always come from a short code. Also, I do not recognize the web address that was provided. Our customers can simply visit Rogers.com or download our MyRogers app and login to their profile to view their billing details and make a payment. 👍

We appreciate you taking the time to spread the word on this possible scam and for helping keep everyone safe and sound!

Thanks,

RogersYasmine
